Scope and Content
This collection of 317 items, 1823-1930, contains chiefly letters to Fannie
Tompkins Childress.
Fannie was originally from "Caroline" in Spotsylvania County, but after her
marriage to J. Waller
Childress she moved around quite frequently.
Letters to Fannie Tompkins Childress from her relatives are mainly concerned
with family affairs.
One of February 19, 1872 mentions the marriage of Aurelius Rose to Bettie
Bearyley on January
20. Another mentions the marriage of Fannie's nephew Thomas Durrett (born
September 23, 1873)
to Jessie Frazer on November 14, 1893 (October 19, 1893).
Letters to Fannie Tompkins Childress from her sister Margaret J. Tompkins
Childress Durett are
mostly concerned with family relations. A number of the letters refer to
Margaret's experience
raising chickens which was not very profitable for her; from the references
Fannie also engaged in
this occupation. In addition, a number of the letters refer to the poor
health of Margaret and her
family. Two letters speak of the marriage of Margaret's daughter Fannie
Durett to William Tribble in
January 1900 (January 5 and February 21, 1900.) Margaret and her husband
were greatly upset at
this marriage, but later restored normal relations. A n.d. letter mentions
the death of Margaret's
husband and the pain it caused.
Letters to Fannie Tompkins Childress from her husband J. Waller Childress
are courtship letters.
They met on November 2, 1871 and were married November 6, 1872. During most
of that period
they did not see each other.
Letters to Fannie Tompkins Childress from her sons, Robert Waller Childress
and Clifford
Childress, are mostly requests for their mother to do something for them.
Letters to Fannie Tompkins Childress from Dr. James B. Manson are love
letters. James was
originally from Georgia, and met Fannie during the Civil War. Manson, a
married man with one
child, became quite infatuated with Fannie. The early letters mention
Sherman's drive through
Georgia; letters of January 9 and March 10, 1870 mention the postwar
conditions of farmers in
Georgia. A January 13, 1871 letter mentions a black revolt and the Ku Klux
Klan, the success of
the Democrats in congressional elections of 1870, and the Franco-Prussian War.
Letters to Fannie Tompkins Childress from her cousin James Tompkins were
written during the
Civil War. However, very little of interest was discussed. One, September
26, 1862, mentions all
the people in his regiment that have been killed or wounded.
Miscellaneous letters to Fannie Tompkins Childress contain two letters
referring to Robert E. Lee,
and two letters, 1868-1869, to Thomas Garland of Albemarle County from Henry
Horatio Wells
and Ale[xander?] Rives re appointments and political amnesty.
Miscellaneous Papers of the Terrell family contain epitaphs for two children
who died, Junius Smith
Tyler Terrell on August 22, 1833 and Lucy Ann Terrell on November 1, 1837.
Business Papers contain bills and receipts and some letters concerning the
sale of property owned
by Frances C. Marshall after her death.
Miscellaneous material contains four photographs and an obituary of Fannie
Tompkins Childress.

Childerstones.

>Does anyone have any information on the Maryland line of CHILDERS.
I am searching information on my gggrandfather, Joseph W. Childers, b.
1853, Texas. He was living in Texas around 1873 and married to his wife
Mary Ada Hogland, b. 1854. He and his wife Mary Ada were living in Krebs,
Oklahoma with their children in 1900. The 1900 Census shows that Joseph
was born in Texas and both of his parents were from Georgia. It also shows
Mary Ada from Mississippi. According to one of their daughters, Mary Ada's
parents were George Hogland from TX, and Alta Wright from TN. I am looking
for any information on the various surnames. So far, I have found two of
their living grandsons, ages 74 and 80. I talked with one of them who
informed me that when he was around ten years old, he visited George
Hogland in (Beule ?), Texas. I may have to call him again to confirm the
name of that town, but hopefully someone might give me some insight or
leads regarding this town in Texas. Did/does it exists? Did I hear him
correctly?
I was recently given family pictures of Mary Ada and her children. Some of
the picture mattings show the names of photo studios in Sherman and
Dennison, Texas, and Monroe, LA. The Monroe, LA, pictures look as though
they were taken around the time of the Civil War. I hope that I have
provided enough information that will help me find more long lost relatives
who will share family history with me.

Sent the letter before i was finished. During the Civil War army units
were recuited at the local level and the men would stay with neighbors and
brothers cousins etc, in the same unit, company, regiment etc. Thus state
_____, _____,
regiment, company____, would be filled with men form the same town or
county.
So, you find a lot of the same family in one company or regiment. For an
example the 34th Mississippi regiment had some 16 or so
childers/childress/childears in its ranks. All from Tippah county, or near by,
Mississippi. Nine of these were in one company!! A company by the way was
about 100 men. So in this company almost one out of ten was a
childers/childress! This was good in a way being all of the men knew each
other . The bad side was that if the unit got in the heavy part of a battle a
whole generation of men couild be lost from the same small town. (one small
town in tennesse sent a company of men only to have 3 return alive!!) Hope
thius helps some body in their quest----best to all indiana jack
For those of you that know the name, regiment, and company of your civil
war ancestor. Here's the places to go for his records, often these muster in
records will give such things as height, weight, hair color, eye color etc.
Don't forget to check the states pension records as well. Along with that is a
site that gives a listing of regimental histories that are known to have been
printed. The state archives should be able to give you a short history of
any of the states regiments

that he lived in.
BECAUSE
Yes, Judith,
There are others out here working on the Chiles line. While most
will not be, the occasional connection makes it worthwhile to hang
around. My Chiles line is early VA, and connects with Smithsons. If
you have specific questions, let us hear them.

Hi,
Here is another one of my Cook ancestors who married into the Childers
family:
Generation No. 1
1. WM.1 (WILLIAM?) died Bef. 1860. He married PATSY.
Child of WM. (WILLIAM?) and PATSY is:
2. i. MILTON H.2 CHILDERS, b. May 09, 1831; d. April 02, 1920.
Generation No. 2
2. MILTON H.2 CHILDERS (WM.1 (WILLIAM?)) was born May 09, 1831, and died
April 02, 1920. He married SPICY EMALINE COOK February 10, 1870, daughter of
JESSE COOK and MARTHA AIKEN.
Notes for MILTON H. CHILDERS:
I saw Milton's grave, it is the same as Spicy's but has only his day of birth,
not day of death. So he may or may not be buried in the same place.
Milton is listed on the 1860 Burke County census with mother Patsy and brother
Gilbert
It says he is 23 years old and his brother 28 but I think they got the dates
wrong, or someone put them on wrong on the tombstone.
Childers death index says Milton H. Childers died April 4, 1920...but names
his parents as John Childers and ? Howard. I think this is our Milton, but it
is hard to know for sure. Maybe we will find a Death Cert for him soon.
Notes for SPICY EMALINE COOK:
Found Spicy's marriage and death certificate and grave while on my NC research
trip. Her gravestone has her name spelled Spicie.
Her death certificate says she was married when she died, not widowed. We have
no death date for her husband.
Children of MILTON CHILDERS and SPICY COOK are:
i. HATTIE3 CHILDERS.
ii. DYSORT CHILDERS.
iii. MARTHA CHILDERS.
iv. OLIVER CHILDERS.

Hi All,
Here are the some of the Childers that married into my Cook line:
Descendants of John Childers
Generation No. 1
1. JOHN1 CHILDERS. He married REBECCA.
Child of JOHN CHILDERS and REBECCA is:
2. i. BOGLE A.2 CHILDERS, b. February 20, 1849; d. June 12, 1912, buried at
Fairview Methodist Church, Joy NC.
Generation No. 2
2. BOGLE A.2 CHILDERS (JOHN1) was born February 20, 1849, and died June 12,
1912 in buried at Fairview Methodist Church, Joy NC. He married MARTHA JANE
COOK February 11, 1869 in Burke County NC, daughter of JESSE COOK and MARTHA
AIKEN.
Notes for MARTHA JANE COOK:
I found her married certificate, death certificate and grave during my
research trip to NC. She goes by Jane Cook on her marriage certificate, grave
says M.J. Childers, and death certificate says Martha Jane Childers, daughter
of Jesse Cook.
Marriage Notes for BOGLE CHILDERS and MARTHA COOK:
Children information is provided by the Cook History and Genealogy book by
Earl Cook
Children of BOGLE CHILDERS and MARTHA COOK are:
i. JOHN3 CHILDERS.
3. ii. MADISON LEMUEL CHILDERS, b. February 13, 1887; d. May 29, 1968, buried
at Fairview Methodist Church, Joy NC.
iii. ELVIE CHILDERS.
iv. EMMA CHILDERS.
v. MATTIE CHILDERS.
vi. ROBERT CHILDERS.
vii. JESSIE CHILDERS.
viii. MAGGIE CHILDERS.
Generation No. 3
3. MADISON LEMUEL3 CHILDERS (BOGLE A.2, JOHN1) was born February 13, 1887,
and died May 29, 1968 in buried at Fairview Methodist Church, Joy NC. He
married PHEBIE M. JOHN.
Notes for MADISON LEMUEL CHILDERS:
Madison's name is found on a Childers Death Index for Burke County. It names
his parents as Bouge Childers (Bogle) and Mary Jane Cook (Martha Jane).
6/14/98 I just now made the connection to who Madison was married to, because
I saw his death date on the death index and checked it with a picture I have
of a grave that said his name on it. He is buried with his parents in Joy.
Children of MADISON CHILDERS and PHEBIE JOHN are:
i. LEVADA4 CHILDERS, d. December 05, 1914.
ii. EDITH IRENE CHILDERS, d. January 13, 1919.
iii. JOHN VERNON CHILDERS, b. June 14, 1917; d. December 23, 1971, buried at
Fairview Methodist Church, Joy NC.
iv. JAMES HERMAN CHILDERS, d. January 30, 1984.
Notes for JAMES HERMAN CHILDERS:
I believe this is also a son of Madison and Phebie's. I found his name on the
death index, parents named as Madison and Ophelia John (same maiden name as
Phebie's).

Greetings! -
I subscribed to this list because I have seen Childers listed as a variant
of Chiles - was hoping to see some postings related to this name. Since I
haven't, I just thought I'd send a post to ask if there are any members of
the list with this particular variant - ? My Chiles line has lived in
Nebraska, Virginia (Jamestown), Missouri, and (I think) Ohio & Kentucky.
Please post to let me know if there is anyone at all interested in this
variant.
Thanks!

We had a great meeting last week in Fort Wayne IN. Waited all week to meet
Indiana Jack, but I heard that he had to work and didn't make the meeting.
Maybe next year when we will meet in Frankford KY.
This is what Joann Childers had to say about the meeting " that was a great
meeting. We love making new friends.
I overheard Leda Childress "complimenting" the front desk about how well the
meeting went. That was a good setting, the hotel personnel were cooperative,
the copy machine was "the best" (& it was used.). Leda was telling them how
much she enjoyed the banquet, & how good the food was.
I want to phone Margaret Jo Peregrine to find out how she is feeling.
We do appreciate all your efforts to make this meeting a success. Again I
will say "Hats Off" to Jack and Cindy. You did a GREAT JOB.
