Rd Woodruff SC 29388. She will be starting a Childers/Childress Clearing
House newsletter beginning in Jan. I had published the Childress Chatter for
18 years and have sent Joann ALL my material. Bad health has put a stop to a
lot of the things I enjoyed. The Childers/Childress Family Association will
be meeting in SC the weekend of 12 Oct.....Joann can give you all the info on
that meeting. This will be the17 annual meeting of this group. They bring
their material for comparison to the meeting. There will be people there
who can help you in your quest and would be glad to see what you have
gathered. Please be sure to bring documentation and proof of your
statements.
Hazel;
Spent an hour looking for something I remember seeing. It is from
book AMHERST CO., VA IN THE REVOLUTION. It was sent to my by lady who had
newsletter called "CHILDRESS CHATTER".
Wright, Andrew....Nelson Co., VA., May 31, 1844. Lucy Wright, ages(sic) 81
widow of Andrew Wright who d. Nov. 25 1816, applied. Served in the Rev.
1779, as a waggoner hauling corn, wheat, flour and other produce to the
Barracks: enlisted Oct., 1780, under Capt. John Christian, with his brother,
Joseph Wright, Benj. Childress, Alexander McAlexander, and returned home at
Christmas. Enlisted 1781, under Capt. James Pamplin,, and was in battle of
Jamestown. They were married in Charlottesville by Rev. Clay, of the Church
of England, in a room full of British officers taken with Burgoyne; the
license was obtained in Amherst. May 30, 1844 Benj. Childress, Albemarle
Co., aged 81 testified the waggon Andrew Wright drove belonged to Robin
Wright, a man of family, who usually drove his own waggon. Robin's waggon
had been pressed into public service by the Quarter Master, who had bought
up corn and wheat in Amherst to be taken to the mill to be ground and then
hauled to the Barracks for the troops. Samuel Childress, aged 79, stated
that Andrew Wright and his sisiter(sic) Lucy Childress were married 1779.
His brother, Benjamin Childress, served a tour with Andrew and Joseph Wright
and Alexander McAlexander. Her claim was allowed. Benjamin Wright, Nelson
Co., May 30 1814, testified the following family record were leaves taken
from his parent's Bible. The marriage of Lucy, Mar 11, 1777, should read
married to sife, Sarah S. who died at the birth of her daughter Sarah 1778.
Lucy Childers was Andrew Wrights 2nd wife.
Did you have that?
Now, I need to tell you that because of you and another lady, I just
had a major breakthrough on a line closely associated with this line.
Another 27 years old wall broken down, I have found parents of Henry
JOHNSTON. Henry JOHNSTON & Agness WALLER had Ann Kay JOHNSTON who m.
Benjamin CHILDRESS.
What a thrill, just had to share this with somebody.

I'd like to ask the indulgence of the list owner if I extend the scope of
the list a bit. For a number of years, I have been doing a single-surname
study of the rare surname, Childerstone and its variants: Childerston,
Childerson, Chillerston, Chillison and a perhaps more. At no time in the
last 400-500 years have there been more than about 100 individuals in the
world with this surname at the same time. The name comes from the same root
as "Childers", meaning "younger sons" with the addition of the Anglo-Saxon
"ton" indicating "place". Thus, the name means "Place of the younger sons".
Because Childerstone is hard for some people to pronounce, the name has a
tendency to "drift" around a bit. It was common, in the southern US for it
to be recorded as "Chillison" by those who heard it. I know a few cases
where it was recorded as "Childers". They aslo code into the same C436
Soundex group with Childers, so I've spent many fun-filled hours watching
Childers roll by while looking for one or two Childerstones.
American Childerstones are descended from Roger Childerstone of Dorchester
Co., MD (who has a long English pedigree) and John Childerstone of
Philadelphia (whose ancestry is unknown). If anyone finds any of the above
surnames in their research, I would love to exchange notes.

To date Joann Childers is not on AOL....would not be surprised if she will be
in the future. She has a daughter who is on line but do not have the dau.
screename. Be sure to keep in contact with her.....there are new people
coming in all the time.
I haven't run this past the list for a while, so I'm trying once again:
Searching for the parents, siblings, and ancestry of my 3rd great
grandmother, Harriet Childs born Dec. 11, 1798 in either Vermont (or possibly
Connecticut). Harriet married Philip Tufford on Oct. 8, 1816 in Niagara,
Niagara Co., NY. They had the following children: Barbara, Mary Ann,
Isaiah, Bartlett, Sarah Jane, Edwin C., Martha Elizabeth (Edwin and Martha
were twins), and Emmett Harrison. Harriet died Aug. 16, 1854, place unknown.
Does anyone know this Childs family?
Is there anyone out there searching for CHILDS? Mine came from
Kidderminister, England in the early 1840's. Ending up in Utah, by 1848.

I am researching the John M. Childers line. John M. Childers was born in
1858 (gravestone) in Georgia. According to the 1900 Arkansas Census his
father and mother were also born in Georgia. His wife Mattie was born in
1858 in Georgia. They had children: Luke (1881); William (1882), and John
(1886) born in Georgia. Clemie was their first child to be born in
Arkansas in 1890. The family moved from Georgia to Arkansas between
1886-90. Most of their children settled in Clark and Nevada counties,
Arkansas. John M. (1858-1914) and Mattie (1858-1928) are buried in Bethel
Cemetary in Clark County Arkansas. It is believed that James Dawson
Childers (1852-1929) buried in the same cemetary with a large number of
other Childers was a brother to John and moved to Arkansas at the same
time. Any info that would help would be appreciated.
May I suggest you write to: Joann Childers 960 River Rd Woodruff SC 29388.
She has info on your line...you need to compare info with her. Be sure to be
ready to list your sources for info you have, if any. If you do not have
sources, at least list where your info came from. Molly Reigard 1321 Gum
