Message Board Post:
I am attempting to find out more about the parentage of John Child, a London banker, who purchased the estate called the manor of Ruislip, or Catherine-end in 1719.
I have located the following information about the family from wills and online publications.
John's father, name unknown was buried in Christ Church, Newgate Street, London. He had two sisters Bethiah (died prior to 1 April 1747 and buried 6 April 1747) and Rebecca (died Nov 1738, buried 17 November 1738) both of whom died spinsters and were also buried in Christ Church, Newgate.
John had 6 children, two daughters and 4 sons:
1. Bethiah Child married Joseph Mico, merchant on 01 May 1733 in Deptford, Kent and had 4 daughters : Sarah the eldest married John Lewin; Martha the second daughter married John Bradney 9/1/1772 and died 16 August 1781 aged 43 (born 1738); Bethiah the third daughter (christened 29 MAY 1744, Protestant) married Thomas Gibson on 18 Dec 1764 and the youngest daughter Mary married Thomas Bradbury Winter, 03 Aug 1773 and died 27 Jun 1794.
2. Martha Child, mentioned in the will of her brother John dated 03 Mar 1742.
3. John Child, wrote his will 03 Mar 1742 which was proved 09 Apr 1743. He mentions, his father John, brothers Samuel and Christopher and sisters Bethia Mico and Martha Child. an Aunt Bethiah Child, a cousin ? [Isaac?] Child, a cousin Elizabeth Osborne, and a cousin William Brooks. From this it appears that John did not marry or did not have issue.
4. Christopher Child, wrote his will 09 Jun 1763 which was proved 16 August 1763. Leaving the estate at Ruislip to his nieces Sarah Mico, Martha Mico, Bethia Mico and Mary Mico.
He also mentions his cousin Isaac Child of [Leadenhall?] Street London, Gentleman, Jonah Vardon of Greenwich and Mary his wife [Jonah Vardon married a Mary Child 20 April 1751, Mary is a cousin?], a cousin Mary Woodmass? wife of William Woodmass of Perkham in the county of Surrey, a cousin John Wilcocks of Philadelphia, merchant. Thomas Childe of Turnham Green, Middlesex. From this it appears that Christopher did not marry or did not have issue.
5. Samuel Child, mentioned in the will of his brother John.
6. Unknown son, mentioned in the will of his aunt Rebecca Child dated 7 December 1728 (proved 24 November 1738)
If anyone has any information on the parentage of John, his wife or family I would be very greatfull.
He may be connected to Child & Co Bank.
I have a little further information on the Mico family of London, (will of Richard Mico, his wife Sarah Mico nee Joseph, parents of Joseph Mico who married Bethiah Child) and the descent from brothers John Winter of Shenley and Rev. Richard Winter family if anyone is interested.
