That's good. I thought you might have been in shoot-the-messenger mode for a while. :o)
Oh, good, you know Elvira's father's name. I found it last night in a Womble family tree on Ancestry.com.
There were six children with Sarah in the 1850 Census, Jacob, 13; Elizabeth, 11; Sally, 9; Susannah, 7; Malvina, 6 and Elvira at age 4. Can you tell me which ones were Sarah's children and which were step-children?
In the 1860 Census Alvira (that's how the enumerator spelled it) Womble, at 14, is living with A Munger family, Marvin a 63-year-old farmer, Celina, presumably his wife at 72 and likely a late in life son Moses at 24 who's working as a farm hand. There was no occupation listed for Alvira but she likely was helping to keep house. It seems Elvira had a rough childhood. Between this, her mother's marriages ending tragically, and her own first marriage ending tragically, maybe she was leery of tempting fate again when she was with George Brown and he finally wore down her resolve after she bore two kids to him.
In 1870, of course you know, Elvira's with John W. Boggs. Their son's name was enumerated as Wilburn E. Boggs. In 1880 That son is with Elvira and her new husband George Brown but is enumerated as Immanuel. I'm wondering if that shouldn't have been Emmanuel instead.
Mariah Ellen Chilcote, on the other hand, seems to have had a good family life, gets married, has three children and dies around age 25. Go figure. Mariah and Elvira were nearly the same age, you know. {sigh}
Your thoughts on any of this?

I just wanted to make sure I was interpreting the data correctly. And I believe you are probably right about them each needing help raising small children.
Sarah Shrum (probably not her maiden name) was married to Simon Womble and they had five children including Elvira although the Shrum name shows up on two of their children.

Thanks for responding. Yes, you're reading it correctly. I'm sorry if that's not the answer you wanted but it is what it is. I'm guessing they initially got together as widow and widower by necessity because they each had young children needing care and support.
Don't forget George and Elvira had at least one more child together after they married and it's possible they had more after the 1880 Census.
Did you look up Sarah Womble in the 1850 Census to get the names of Elvira's siblings? I forgot to take note of them when I was researching that night. Once I saw that Womble was Elvira's maiden name that was enough to answer your question about that.

Now there are more questions which we may or may not be able to answer.
And hopefully what I'm about to write makes sense.
..........
Elvira Womble was married to a Boggs (I have him as John Wilbur/Wilber Boggs) who was born about abt 1838 in TN according to 1870 Census.
In 1873 and 1875 she had two children with the last name "Brown". Had she divorced Boggs before 1873 or had he died? I'm guessing he died since she kept the married name. And I'm believing these two Brown children really were George Brown's children since Elvira had an older child who kept the name Boggs after she remarried.
Thus, she didn't marry George Brown until 1878, after already having two children with him; am I understanding this correctly?

Mariah Jane Hoyt was actually the daughter of the third wife of Amasa Hoyt, Sr. He married Margaret Eakman in Morgan Co., OH, in 1829, a Mariah or Mary Morgan in 1831 in Morgan Co.,(I really don't know anything about her) and had a daughter, Athece with her. In 1835, he married Nancy Patterson who was the mother of Mariah and 9 other children. His final wife was Louisa F Bonnett in 1857 and had 4 children with her.
Mariah Jane was the 9th child born to Nancy Patterson and Amasa. I have photos of the graves that I will find and send them to you.
Hocking, Perry, Licking, and Morgan counties are right next to each other in the southeast corner of the state so it was probably easy for them to go to another town to shop, go to church, or maybe just visit family, and thus meet a new person who became their spouse.
The Chilcotes and the Hoyts (Hoits) intermarried which is why I know so much about both families. Mariah Jane married Philander W. Benscoter.
Samuael Robinson Chilcote's father, Robinson L., was my 4th great grandfather but I cannot prove his birth date or place nor their wedding date. The first I can find of him is when he signs his daughters marriage licenses. His daughters are Margaret and Susannah but I don't know year of birth for either one, Jemoma abt. 1789 in Randolph Co., VA (later becme WV), and Permilia b. abt 1793 In Huntingdon Co., PA. Jemima m. George Corrick in 1810 in Randolph Co; Pemilia "Milly" m.William Burns in 1809 in Randolph Co.
Samuel R and Nancy's 3rd son, John, is my link to the Chilcotes; he married Nancy Gregg, and they had twin girls as their "seond" birth. One of the girls died at birth and Clarissa Abigail was the other one who m. William Henry Ray. One of his sons, Perry Edward, m. Ida Edith Benscoter (had a twin sister also) and these are my maternal grandparents.
I will gladly send you GEDCOMs of my information which might make more sense. You will need to send me your e-mail address as I have too much to post here. My e-mail address is bjhdch(a)iowatelecom.net

I have a Maria J. Hoit born about 1853/1854 in Mahasks County, Iowa, as the last child of Amasa Hoit (1812-1893) and Nancy Margaret Eakman (1814-1857). I have Amasa and Nancy both born in Ohio and they were married in Morgan County, Ohio, on 8 Nov 1829 and moved to Mahaska County, Iowa, between the births of their 4th child, Nicholas, and their 5th child, Patterson. Was this your great-grandmother?
I don't know where Morgan County is in Ohio in relation to Hocking County so I can't address the likelihood of the Chilcote and Hoit families interacting before of near the time of Mariah Jane's birth. Perhaps it was just a coincidence.
I don't have a husband and children for Mariah J., I'm hoping you can fill in those blanks, and I'm having difficulty seeing your link to Samuel Robinson Chilcote's parents. Perhaps it's that I only have 4 children for Robinson L and Elizabeth (Wright) Chilcote, Susanna, Jemima, Permelia and the aforementioned Samuel Robinson. Perhaps you would be kind enough to fill in those blanks as well if you know of more children.
I do know of John Chilcote's daughter, Mary Ellender, and her marriage to Granville Newton Hoit, Amasa'a first child with his second wife, Louisa F. Bonnett, and half sibling to Mariah J.
Thank you for any input you can provide.

This is my maternal line as Samuel Robinson's parents were my 3rd great grandparents. I have the listing of Samuel's and Nancy's children but have only followed them through the 1850 and 1860 censuses in MO. My line follows John, b 1834 in Hocking, OH. If you want more information on the brothers and sisters of Mariah Ellen, please let me know. My great grandmother's name was Mariah Jane Hoyt (Hoit), b in 1854 in Mahaska Co., IA.
I have always wondered if the families knew each other in some way that caused my Hoyt grandparents to name their daughter after Mariah Ellen. I need to do more work on this but I have been too busy helping other than the Daughters of the American Revolution. I am going to the Allen Co., Genealogy Library in Fort Wayne, IN, in August for a week so maybe I will find some answers.

>From information I received from someone 14 years ago, I have a Miriah Ellen Chilcote (23 Oct 1846 - 8 Oct 1870), daughter of Samuel Robinson and Nancy (Thorpe) Chilcote, married to a George Clemens (no dates). The information did not include any children. I hadn't verified this line personally until this evening. Based on my information, the public listing of the Karch Family Tree on Ancestry.com and the 1870 and 1880 censuses for Black River, Reynolds, Missouri and the 1850 census for District 76, Reynolds County, Missouri, I've developed a timeline that may help you out.
1839 - Birth of George Clemens, location unknown at this time.
1840 - Birth of George W. Brown, in Tennessee
23 Oct 1846 - Birth of Mariah Ellen Chilcote, Salt Creek Township, Hocking County, Ohio
1846/47 - Birth of Elvira (Womble) Boggs
1850 Census - Mariah residing in South Brown Township, Vinton County, Ohio.
1850 Census - Elvira Womble residing in the District 76, Reynolds County, Missouri household of Sarah Womble, age 35, presumably her widowed mother, along with 1 older brother and 4 older sisters.
1860 Census - Mariah residing in Black River Township, Reynolds County, Missouri.
1861 - Marriage of Mariah to George Clemens, likely in Missouri and the marriage probably ended in divorce.
1864 - Marriage of Mariah to George W. Brown. probably in Black River Township, Reynolds County, Missouri.
1864 - Birth of Eliza Brown, daughter of George and Mariah Brown, probably in Black River Township, Reynolds County, Missouri.
1866 - Death of George Clemens.
1867 - Birth of Nancy J. Brown, daughter of George and Mariah Brown, probably in Black River Township, Reynolds County, Missouri.
15 Aug 1869 - Birth of Frances Rachel Brown, daughter of George and Mariah Brown, probably in Black River Township, Reynolds County, Missouri.
1869/70 - birth of Immanuel Boggs, son of Mr. and Elvira (Womble) Boggs.
1870 Census - George and Mariah Brown residing in Black River Township, Reynolds County, Missouri.
8 Oct 1870 - Death of Mariah Ellen (Chilcote) Clemens Brown, probably in Black River Township, Reynolds County, Missouri
1873 - Birth of Millie J. Brown, daughter of George and Elvira Brown, probably in Black River Township, Reynolds County, Missouri
1875 - Birth of John O. Brown, son of George and Elvira Brown, probably in Black River Township, Reynolds County, Missouri
14 Mar 1878 - Marriage of George Brown to Elvira Womble Boggs, in Reynolds County, Missouri
Sep 1879 - Birth of Mary Susan Brown, daughter of George and Elvira Brown, probably in Black River Township, Reynolds County, Missouri
1880 Census - George and Elvira Brown residing in Black River Township, Reynolds County, Missouri. All of George Brown's children except Eliza are living with them. Also in the household, listed as George's stepson, is 10-year-old Immanuel Boggs, Elvira's son with her previous husband, name unknown at this time. There's one presumably unrelated person in the household and that is 17-year-old Joseph Lawson, listed as a Hired Hand. George, at age 45, is listed as a Farmer and his son is only 5 and his stepson is only 10 so he likely needed some extra help around the farm.
I hope you've found this to be of help.

Trying to find information on my great-grandfather George Brown who was apparently married to Mariah Ellen Chilcote before he married my great-granmother Elvira Womble (Womble could have been the last name of her first husband), though I haven't been able to verify this.
Mariah Chilcote was born about 1845 in Ohio. I believe her parents might have been Samuel Robinson Chilcote and Nancy Thorpe.
Seeking verification on what information I have.
Plus trying to find out more about these people.
