" The Journal Gazette" Logan, Hocking County, Ohio, Thursday December 12, 1907:
Five Generations of Prominent Hocking County Family
(Picture)
Caption: The above picture represents five generations of a prominent Hocking County family. They are all living except one, Sophia Brain, the aged lady sitting on the chair, as pictured above, who died a few weeks ago. When the Journal-Gazette received the picture of these estimable people, they were all living, but an unavoidable delay in getting this cut, causes us to reproduce it after the family circle had been broken. Reading from left to right they are: Noah Woolever, Clifford Woolever, Mary Woolever, and Margaret Chilcote, with Sophia Brain, now deceased, sitting in the chair.
Following is an account of the death and burial of Sophia Brain, who was one of the pioneers of Hocking County:
Mrs. Sophia Joy, familiarly known as Grandma Brian, died at her late home near Gibisonville, Saturday night, Nov. 23, 1907, at the ripe old age of 99 years, 1 month and 8 days.
Mrs. Joy was born in the state of Maryland, October 15, 1811. She removed with her parents to Muskingum County at the age of 7 years , remaining in the county for a number of years. Grandma Brian had the honor of seeing her father pick her up out of the crib and kiss herself and brother, bidding them goodbye before going to the war of 1812. How many persons in the State of Ohio have actually experienced a life like this?
On December 24, 1829, she was united in marriage to John Silva Brian. To this union was born 13 children. Five died in infancy. The remaining ones are as follows: Basil Brain, of Scott, Van Wert county, O.; James Brain of Honewell, Kan.; Isaac Brain of Ethridge, Tenn.; David Brain of Kachelmacher, Hocking County, Ohio; Mrs. Susan Kinser of Circleville, Ohio; Mrs. Becky Poling of Pursell, Ohio; Mrs. Margaret Chilcote of Purcell, Ohio and Elisabeth Long, who died October 2, 1904, at the old homestead of her mother.
Mrs. Sophia Joy united with the M.P. church at the age of 15 years, later receiving a letter and joining the same church at Pine Grove, retaining her membership until death.
Grandma Brain was the possessor of 59 grandchildren; 123 great- grandchildren, and 26 great-great-grandchildren, besides a number of other relatives and friends. She was laid to rest on Tuesday, November 26, at Pine Grove cemetery. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Baker of Gibisonville, Ohio.
