Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Hi Nancy,
Thank you for responding. The way the List is set up now the
default seems to be that replies are automatically addressed
to the original sender rather than the list. Those using Outlook
Express, as you and I are doing, will have to use OE's `Reply to
All' button on the tool bar, it's `Message - Reply to All' menu
bar option or the `Crtl+Shift+R' keyboard shortcut, then delete
the original sender's address from the `To:' field thus sending
the response only to the list if that is the desire. Netscape
and other email programs will no doubt have similar procedures.
The list setting can be changed by the List administrator, of
which we are currently lacking.
I have to confess total ignorance of the Chilcott line of which
you wrote, Nancy, but perhaps someone else who monitors this
List will see your post and be able to help you. Good luck in
your research...

Thank you, Carey. According to the information that you've
collected, I think my next step should be to make a trip to
Hustontown, PA and check out the cemeteries. Is there anyone
on this list who could tell me how many cemteries are in
Hustontown and the names of them?
I'm glad to see that the list has picked up a little, but
still I am wondering how many Chilocte are here. I think we
have only heard from three or four in the past year. I assumed
that the message that came in the other day, with the subject:
Roll Call, was a request for people to write in stating which
Chilcotes they are searching for. I've collected information
on other Chilcotes, besides the couple I am searching for and
maybe I could be of help to some of you. I'm willing to share
anything I find, but first, I have to know what you're looking
for.
If there is anyone out there, please let us know. Just a short
message saying you are there and what line of the Chilcotes
you are from, would be a big help.
Christine
Hello,
The only thing I know about the Chilcote family is that my grandfather was
Thomas Chilcote. He married Marie Bredesen and one of their children,
Virginia, is my mother (deceased). Her brother, Thomas, was killed in the
Korean War (so was my grandfather). I'm not sure if they are in the same
family of Chilcotes you are all talking about, but if anyone has any
information on Thomas Chilcote, I would appreciate hearing from you!
I have a trunk of material which belonged to my grandfather, and recall
going through it once, but I'll pull it down and look through it again to
see what I can find for this mailing list.
God bless!

Hi Christine,
Here's what I know about William Chilcote:
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
William S. CHILCOTE
1. William S. CHILCOTE was born in 1849, possibly in Todd Township,
Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, the son of Solomon and Margaret Chilcote.
He died on 16 Aug 1887 in Hustontown, Taylor Township, Fulton County,
Pennsylvania from eating poison mushrooms.
William was employed as gunsmith.
DEATH-NOTICE: From unknown newspaper, date uncertain
Died by Poisoning
On Sunday a week, the 14th inst, William Chilcoat, living at
Hustontown went to the woods
and gathered what he supposed were mushrooms, took them home and prepared,
and ate
them. In a little while he became very sick, and went out and procured
lobelia to act as an
emetic. This gave him no relief, however. He vomited and purged violently
and seemed to be
burning with
a consuming thirst. He drank copiously of water and this gave temporary
but not lasting relief.
Dr. Hill was sent for but not till the unfortunate man had been suffering
many hours, and when
he arrived he could give no relief. On Tuesday afternoon the sufferer was
taken with severe
cramps from which he suffered till Wednesday morning about 5 o'clock when
he died.
Deceased was about forty years of age, and leaves a son to mourn his death.
He was a native
of Trough Creek Valley, Huntingdon County, but had been working at his
trade-gunsmithing-at
Hustontown for several years.
BIOGRAPHY: from a book entitled "Bedford, Somerset and Fulton County
Gunsmiths", page 7.
William S. Chilcote (1849-1887). William was a son of Solomon and
Margaret Chilcote of
Tod Township, Huntingdon County [U.S. Census of 1860]. In 1870 William was
an apprentice
gunsmith, living in the household of James Stapleton, gunsmith of Tod
Township. In 1880 he
was a gunsmith in Broad Top city, Huntingdon County. He and his wife
Martha [age 27] had a
son William [6] [U.S. Census]. He died on 16 August 1887 in Hustontown,
Fulton County
[Orphan's Court Book VII, p. 98].
COMMENT: by Carey Chilcote, 4 Dec 2000, concerning William's date of death
The short biography follows information garnered from the censuses for
Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, for 1870 and 1880, even to the mention of
his parents and apprenticeship with James Stapleton. Except for one
niggling little detail it also jibes with the Death Notice. The newspaper
said he died "Wednesday morning about 5 o'clock" yet the book states he
died on 16 August 1887, which happened to fall on Tuesday that year.
Checking adjacent years doesn't help because in 1886 that date fell on
Monday and in 1888 it fell on Thursday (it skipped ahead 1 day because of
Leap Year). Oh well...
William married Martha B. FLECK "Mattie", daughter of Daniel FLECK and
Elizabeth BOLLINGER. Mattie was born 3 Oct 1852. She died on 11 Mar 1882 in
Broad Top City, Carbon Township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania and was
buried in Broad Top City I.O.O.F Cemetery, Carbon Township, Huntingdon
County, Pennsylvania.
DEATH-NOTICE: from The Huntingdon Globe dated March 23, 1882
DIED, CHILCOAT---At Broad Top, March 11th, Mrs. Mattie Chilcoat, wife of
William Chilcoat,
aged about 29 years.
TOMBSTONE: Inscription from Broad Top City Cemetery, Carbon Township,
Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, as reported by Carolyn Carroll of Everett,
Bedford County, Pennsylvania via email dated 15 March 2000.
Martha B. Chilcoate
died March 11, 1882
aged 29 y 5 mo and 8 da
wife of William Chilcoate
BIRTH:
Birth date calculated using date of death of 11 Mar 1882 and age at
death recorded on
tombstone as 29 years, 5 months and 8 days.
William and Mattie had the following children:
2 M i. William C. CHILCOTE was born in 1874.
BIRTH: Birth year based on age of 6 years reported in 1880 Census record
for father William S. Chilcote's household in Broad Top City, Carbon
Township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania.
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
William C. Chilcote or Chilcoat or Chilcoate, depending on which source one
believes, was orphaned at around 13 years of age in Hustontown, Taylor
Township, Fulton County, Pennsylvania. This is the point at which we've
lost track of him. Was he taken in by relatives or friends of the family
or stuck away in an orphanage in Fulton County? We've found out that he
purchased some small items, a blanket and a some articles of clothing I
think, at the auction of his father's estate and we also know that James
Stapleton, the man to whom his father had once been apprenticed, attended
that auction as well, buying some of the gunsmithing tools as I recall.
It's possible that William C. was born while his father was
still living Stapleton's household, we don't know for sure because our
information comes from the decadal census. It's also possible Mr.
Stapleton took the boy in out of friendship for his former apprentice. The
1890 Census might have provided very revealing evidence in this matter but,
as we all know, most of the results of that census were destroyed by fire
and water...
If anyone on the list has any further information on this family, I'd love
to hear from you...

I am interested in the families of two particular PA Chilcote
brothers. Namely, William Chilcote, born 1849, married to
Martha (Mattie) Fleck and his brother John Savage Chilcote,
born 1851, married to Mattie's sister, Susan Fleck.
Are there any other researchers out there that know anything
about this family?
Christine Boonie
I noticed this list is without an administrator at present.
Is there anyone out there monitoring this list, hoping someone
will post something relevant to their lines of focus?
My focus is primarily the Chilcote/Chilcoat families who
stayed behind in Pennsylvania after the westward migrations
of the early 19th Century, but I am also interested in those
who traveled onward and their descendants. Are there any
fellow researchers interested in the Pennsylvania Chilco**s?
