Did anyone ever claim this Samuel Chidester, who lived in the vicinity of Wooster, Ohio, as being from their family line?
Betty Slovinski and I have been exchanging emails about the Richard Chidester family. We may be close to providing a reasonably complete history. This week Betty put together a complete Census record and she is getting copies of Richard's death record.
One matter that is exciting is we think we have Richard's wife's name. Many of the documents have her as Ruth Filvenda. I have never been able to find the Filvenda surname anywhere. I also have a letter from Lois Salmons date May 1999 which gives the name as Ruth Saldkield. This letter says that Saldkield is an alternative for Filvenda. I have found Salkelds in 1860 (Illinois) as well as Saldkelds but the latter are all in Utah and Idaho. We are checking the 1850 and 1840 Censuses for Ohio Salkelds.
The 1860 Census shows Richard and Lucinda Chidester. I now believe that Filvenda is a mis-reading of Lucinda and that Salkeld is her maiden name. I believe that we will find her name to be Lucinda Ruth Salkeld. She applied for a Civil War pension and if we can get that file we will have the complete answer. Betty also found a death record for Richard (6 Jul 1916 Licking, OH) and a possible death for Ruth (Lucindi R. Chidester 25 Oct 1917). These are very likely. Richard and Ruth are in the 1910 Census (St. Albans, Licking, OH) but not on the 1920 Census.
Thanks to Betty for really good research.
I have also been trying to confirm the marriage of Mary Jane Chidester (1859- ), daughter of Thomas George Chidester, to Benjamin F. Clark. If true they were married 28 Aug 1877 in Paulding County, Ohio and appeared on the 1880 Census there with a son, Burt Clark. They then moved to Kansas where they had two more children, Laurah (?) and Opal. They divorced in 1891 and Mary Jane married George Hammond in Wichita, Kansas in 1894.
Regards,
John
