The obit ended with the saddness of six small
children "left to mourn their mother."
From family letters I have learned that the husband,
Oscar William Chidester was devastated with the loss of
his wife on 31 August 1925, and was unable to care for
the children. In a letter dated 08 June 1926 from Minnie
Chidester Beaver (sister to Oscar William Chidester) in
Savery, Wyoming to my great grandfather Elliott
Chidester in Tacoma, Washington mention is made of where
the children of Oscar and Cora were sent.
Alice was with her uncle Harvey Chidester's family (a
brother of Oscar's, one of the twins); Archie was placed
in the home of a neighbor; Mary went to live with her
Uncle Harry Chidester (a brother of Oscar's, twin to
Harvey); Oscar, Jr. went to live with his Uncle Marshall
Chidester's family (brother to Oscar's); Cora May went
to live with her Aunt Minnie Beaver's family in Wyoming
(writer of the letter); and Calvin Coolidge went to
Illinois with his mother's cousin's family.
I have nothing further on these children ... is anyone
related? or have additional info?

Martha:
Again thank you as I had no family data on Mary Jane
JONES CHIDESTER. This means that Oscar William
CHIDESTER lost his wife, Cora Evelyn NASH and his
mother, Mary Jane JONES within a month of each other.
Mary Jane JONES CHIDESTER's husband was Leander Scotland
CHIDESTER (1848-1919) who was the son of Zadok/Zadock
CHIDESTER (1816-1897) and Susanna THARP (1822-1903).
The daughter, Minnie CHIDESTER BEAVERS (born 1882),
wrote to my great grandfather on the 04 Jan 1927 from
Savery, Wyoming: "I haven't been extra well but Dr.
says it is my heart and I ought to go to lower climate.
I have always been better when in Iowa I hold my deed
to fifty acres of Mothers land It lays from top of the
old home orchard and takes in the church and cemetery.
I want to keep that much there as I sold my share of
Father's land to my Bros and bought our home ranch here
where we live. Have lived here on Snake River five
years last August. We have long winters but at that I
like Wyoming winter better than Wyoming summer."

Cora's husband, Oscar William CHIDESTER (1884-1963) was
the son of Leander Scotland CHIDESTER (1848-1919) and
Mary Jane JONES (1851-1925).
Cora and Oscar are buried in the Bethel Cemetery, Mantua
Township, Monroe County, Iowa.
I was very happy to see Cora NASH CHIDESTER's obit as I
had no information on her except the dates on the
tombstone (1893-1925). I knew of the accident thru
family history/stories.
Thanks "Martha near Seattle". I will gladly share
information with others, too.

FATAL AUTO ACCIDENT
While Crossing Road, Mrs. Oscar CHIDESTER is Run Down and Killed
Monday Eve
One of the most distressing accidents that ever happened in this community
occurred on the Air Line auto road, four miles northwest of Blakesburg, last
Monday evening when Mrs. Oscar CHIDESTER was run down and killed while
attempting to cross the road. The car which struck her was an Overland
touring en route to Albia and driven by James L. CLESTER and in the car were
his wife, five children and Bertha MORRIS, who were returning home from a
trip to Ottumwa. The accident occurred in front of the CHIDESTER home and
was witnessed by Mrs. Marshal CHIDESTER, who exonerated Mr. CLESTER from all
blame. Mrs. Marshal CHIDESTER had started in her car to Ottumwa and it
stopped in front of the Oscar CHIDESTER home when his wife went out to the
car. She finally succeeded in getting the car started and it made so much
noise that Mrs. Oscar CHIDESTER did not hear the CLESTER car coming and
stepped backward in front of the approaching car. Mr. CLESTER made every
effort to stop his car and also honked the horn to notify her of the danger.
We understand that Oscar CHIDESTER, husband, also witnessed the accident but
did not know it was his wife who had been struck until after he had picked
her up. A physician was summoned and Dr. R. J. SELMAN was soon at the scene
of the accident. Mrs. CHIDESTERS neck had been broken and death was
instantaneous. The coroner was notified at Albia and he too drove out to
the scene of the accident, but deemed it an unavoidable accident and did not
hold an inquest. The sad
ending of this womans earthly career is a shock to the community and
friends of the family are bowed down in grief. The life of the wife and
mother of six small children has been snuffed out in the prime of her life
and no one, aside from the immediate family, feels the sting more than James
CLESTER, who drove the car that hurled this wife and mother to her death.
While Mr. CLESTER is exonerated from all blame by the family, yet the
accident is doubly sad to him on account of the six small children left to
mourn their mother. Thus once more we are reminded of lifes uncertainty.
The funeral will be held Friday afternoon at Bethel.
