I am seeking information on the families of Isaac Armstrong and Frances
Chidester, daughter of Eliphalet Chidester.
Isaac and Frances along with Eliphalet and Mary, her mother, appear in
Preston County WV. in the early 1800s. Isaac died there in 1866 and Frances
in 1868.
Does anyone know when and where they were born or married? Can anyone suggest
where to look to find this information?
Thanks,
Elizabeth
I am seeking information on Nancy J. Hart born about 1821 in Virginia. Her father was Peter Chidester and her mother a Wilson.
Nancy J. Chidester married William Hart in 1835 in Preble Co., OH. In 1849 William, Nancy, and children moved to Millbrook Twp., Peoria Co.., IL. I have much information on their descendants in Illinois that I can share
Paula,
Thanks for your reply. Commadore Perry's grandfather was Henry Chidester bn 1796 md Sarah Cooper about 1813. Maybe he was a brother to your Andrew. Doyou know anything about Andrew's siblings?
Thanks,
Sharon Chiddister
Sharon,
I found this and thought it may be of interest to you:
Taken from 'Jefferson County,
Pennsylvania - Her Pioneers and People',
by Dr. William James McKnight,
Volume II, published in Chicago by J.H.
Beers & Company in 1917, page 82.
The Chitesters are of English
origin, and early generations of the
family in this country are found in New
Jersey, from which State some of its
members served in the Revolutionary
war. The great grandfather of Clarence
Clark Chitester was a native of New
Jersey, and one of his sons, William, was
with Commodore Perry in the battle of
Lake Erie. Another, Daniel, was the
grandfather of C.C. Chitester.
Daniel Chitester was born Aug.
12, 1808, at Hollidaysburg, Pa., and
moved with the family to Westmoreland
county, this State, where he grew up.
On Aug. 21, 1828, he was married there
to Elizabeth Schrum, who was born Nov.
9, 1802, at Fairfield, Westmoreland
county. Some time later this couple
came to Jefferson county, where they
were among the pioneer settlers.
I am a descendant of Andrew Chitister 1774-1845 , the great-grandfather that was mentioned above. His son William was not born until 1822 so he could not have fought Perry in the Battle of Lake Erie. I think that they may meant his brother William. I am not sure why the spelling of Chidester changed, Andrew was born Chidester in NJ, on the 1810 census it was Chiddester, by the time they got to Jefferson County, PA he was Chittister , and later spellings were Chittester and Chitester.
I was wondering if your Commodore was the son a Chidester from NJ who served with him and named a child after him. Maybe there is a connection to my branch.
You never know.
Paula
Kim,
I was looking through the message board since they added the search feature and I noticed your message. I can't remember if I ever got back to you. I 'm sorry it took me so long if I didn't, I was very sick at the beginning of the year, that must be how I may have missed it.
My Chidester family was from England and came to PA from NJ. My Elijah was born in Blair County and grew up in Westmoreland County so we are both in the same area. He was born 26 June 1813 and married Elizabeth Metz b. 12 May 1816. They both died in a train /carriage accident in 1875 in Iowa.
Elijah and Eliza moved to Jefferson County, PA in 1835 and that is where my ggggrandmother, Margery Chittester Rice was born and died. In 1854, the family except Margery, moved to Iowa.
I wasn't aware of any other children that stayed in the area.
We believe that Elijah's father Andrew may be the son of Elijah Chidester and Mary Hoppelar, so it is possible that you are a decendant of one of Andrew Chidester's brothers.
Please forgive my tardiness and if you are still interested e-mail me the names and dates of your Chidester so I can figure out how we are connected. You can contact me through this board or paulapompeii(a)hotmail.com.
