Eugene C. "Benny" Chidester, 85, of County House Lane, Marietta, died at 7 a.m. Monday (April 2, 2001) at the Arbors at Marietta.
He was born Nov. 8, 1915, in Marietta to Alonzo and Stella Whiting Chidester. He attended Marietta High School. He had served with the 456th Fighter Squadron 414th Fighter Group in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater in World War II. He was awarded two bronze stars for his participation in the Air Offensive of Japan and the Western Pacific Campaign.
Chidester had been manager of the Ohio State Liquor Store until his retirement. He enjoyed sports of all kinds. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5108 and American Legion Post 64.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Duty Chidester, whom he married June 23, 1939; one sister-in-law, Rose Scott of Marietta; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Charles Duty and Carl Duty; and one sister, Frances McBride.
There are no services or visitation. McClure-Schafer Funeral Home in Marietta is in charge of arrangements.
[Note: The brothers should probably by Charles and Carl Chidester. I don't know whether this was the way the paper read or a typo in sending it to me. I have to sort through some papers to see what Eugene sent me last year.]

That's a very short obituary. I will add a little more. Eugene Curtis (EC) Chidester was the grandson of Levi David Chidester. EC had done extensive family research on the Chidesters for almost 50 years. I found him in 1999 and he gave me the benefit of his many years of research and I am thankful for that. EC was my second cousin twice removed.

Richard and Mary Boudinot Chidester had eight children; Horace, Samuel, Julia, Charles, George W.(ggrandfather), Richard, and Henrietta. I would like to find other Chidester folks who would like to help me find out more about these Chidesters. I would love photos. They were all born within the 1820 to 1840 time span and lived around Marietta (Washington County) OH and Franklin County, ILL. My ggrandfather George W. Chidester married Adeline GILES and moved the family to Marionville (Larwence County, MO).

Hi Mick,
I would really appreciate any information you have on Henry Chidester and Sarah Cooper. I know he was born 1796 in New Jersey, married Sarah Elizabeth Cooper on 14 July 1816 in Sunbury, Northumberland, PA and he died 7 Sept. 1834 of cholera in Mt Eaton, Wayne Co. Ohio. I know nothing of his parents and would like to know anything about them if you have it. My desendency is though Jeremiah Hanley Chidester whose son was Commadore Perry Chiddister whose son was Marion Curtis Chiddister whose son was Dean Chiddister (my father). Henry's name is spelled Chitester on their marriage license, but I don't know what it eveolved from. I am assuming is was Chidester and the clerk spelled it like they heard it.
Thanks for replying to my e-mail and I am anxious to hear about your information. My e-mail address is SChid310(a)aol.com.
Sharon

Hello,
I remember reading where the Henry Chidester in my line also was married to a Sarah Cooper, so they must be one and the same. One of their children was Gabriel Chidester, whose son was Commodore. Commodore move to the Beaverdam, Ohio area, where he is buried. He had sons, one of which was John, my Grandfather. The Chidester's, as I remember reading, were blacksmiths. I know that many of the Chidester's in Indiana spell the way your's is. Hope this was helpful. There is more detailed info, but my sister has it. I see if I can get it if you'd be interested. Mick Chidester
