David CHICHESTER's father was James CHICHESTER born bef. 18 Feb 1619/20 in Widworthy, Devon, Eng. and died 29 Jan 1695/96 in Huntington, Suffolk Co., L.I., NY. He married Eunice PORTER abt. 1643 in Taunton, MA, the dau. of Jonathon Porter and Eunice -?- I am a descendant of David. I got this info. from Paul E. Volpp, who's wife is a Chidester; he has done extensive research. His email was (hopefully still is): volpppe(a)pyramid.net He has traced this line back to England in the 1300's. Good luck.

Bill, I wrote to the National Archives about 14 years ago and asked for a RW record for Eliphalet and a record for his son, James for the War of 1812. I was informed by mail that none existed. I did receive CW records for my great grandfather, James Edward Chidester.
Who do you have listed as Eliphalet's ancestors? According to Elmer and Thelma Anderson who did genealogy for over 40 years, Eliphalet was descended from 1)James Chichester b. about 1620 in Devonshire, Eng.; 2) James Chichister bapt. 1650, Salem.; 3) David Chichester, born Huntington, Long Island md. Alice Bailey; 4) Samuel Chidester (the name started to be spelled pretty much uniformly after this individual) born about 1700 in Wallingford, CT married Mehitable/ Mabel/Mahable Tuller; 5) Another Samuel Chidester who married Mary Titman, the dau of George Titman, and was listed in his will as "Mary Chidery".
Will fill you in if you email me directly.

Thanks for the info. Eliphalet Chidester was my 5th great grandfather through his daughter Mary.
I assumed the Chidester name sounded like it was from somewhere in the British Isles, but I also know that some German immigrants anglicized their names. For example, one German ancestor of mine named Schacke, changed his name to Shockey, so when I saw what was written about the Chidesters originally coming from Germany in the History of Preston County, I didn't automatically discount it. The part about his father taking fifteen weeks to get across the ocean tended to add some credibility. I wonder where that came from?
How about the bit about Eliphalet Chidester and his brothers serving in the RW. Do you know if that's true?
Thanks,
Bill Scott

This information reference Eliphalet and Mary is good and pretty commonly known reference their residing in Preston County. Eliphalet and Mary were my fourth great grandparents and everything you wrote in your message rings true....EXCEPT, Eliphalet's father was NOT from Germany. The Chidesters go back in Britain to the Norman invasion in 1066...it is not a German name, and they did not reside in Germany. Eliphalet descended from James Chichester who was here in the Salem/Taunton area in 1620 or so.
I am thinking some of that info in the Preston County History might have come from Eliphalet's children or grandchildren. One of his sons, James from whom I am descended married a
woman named Anna Charlotta Bugh, the daughter of Peter Bugh who was married to Catherine Haberstic/Houvenstay/other spellings, both Peter and Catherine had emigrated from Wirtemberg, Germany just prior to the Rev. War. At any rate, we are certain that Eliphalet's father did not come from Germany.

Here's what I have, mostly taken from "History of Preston County":
Lydia Collins' parents were William Collins (1799 -1859) and Mary Chidester. William Collins was the son of James Collins. William later married Lavina Collins, who appears to have been his cousin. Mary's parents were Eliphalet and
Mary Chidester. Eliphalet and his son William came to to Preston around 1820 from Harper's Ferry and located near the forks of Sandy. He and Mary had a total of at least seven children: Mary, William (1788 – 1869), Francis, Andrew, James, Peter and Lottie. Eliphalet and eight of his brothers served in the Revolutionary War. His father came from Germany on a ship that took fifteen weeks to make the Atlantic crossing.
