Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
This is a warning to listers on all my groups: yes, virus postings ARE off
topic but this one is very urgent and I need to warn everyone to be very
diligent.
There is currently a new virus circulating. It comes apparently from
Microsoft, and is entitled 'Internet Security Update.' It is one of the most
convincing virus messages I have ever seen, and you could easily be fooled
into opening it.
It first appeared on Saturday. I was immediately suspicious. David rang
Microsoft, and they confirmed that it was unknown to them but was a virus..
my Norton Anti-Virus software had let the first one through but almost
immediately after David's call to Microsoft, they closed the gap.
Please ensure for your own safety that your virus protection software is
absolutely up to date. Remember, this is a brand new virus, so any software
installed or updated before Saturday will NOT protect you from this.
To remind you all - you cannot get a virus from a Rootsweb list, as it
cannot pass through Rootsweb servers. Your email address could be stored or
cached on any other subscriber's computer and if they become infected, you
could receive a virus posting from their computer.. remember though that
they did not send the virus to you! It was an automatic action from their
computer. If you have any concerns, please address them to me and not to the
list.
