Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.

Hi everyone
I thought you may like to know that there are now 6 of us subscribed to
the list! We seem to have a fair smattering of variants too. Because
there are so few of us and even fewer researching the identical surname,
we may well not connect with anyone else on the list. However, we need
to remember that all the messages are archived at Rootsweb so someone
may come along tomorrow, next week or next year and discover that they
DO connect with us!
It is some while since I posted my own interests and it would be
terrific if each of us could write just a few sentences about where our
particular branch appears to originate. If we do that on a fairly
regular basis we may scoop some more subscribers.. I see people joining,
quite a few drop by to see what is going on (nothing much very often,
sad to say) then unsubscribe again without ever posting a message.
My own interests are in the name CHIDDY. My branch of the family date
back to the middle ages in the Isle of Wight, England. They came across
to mainland England around the late 1700s and early 1800s and
established themselves in Easton, a small village near Winchester,
Hampshire. The branch of the family on the Isle of Wight and Hampshire
has now almost gone... the only one I know of who is connected with that
branch of the family lives in Epsom, Surrey... they are cousins of mine,
several times removed... there is just one surviving male who is I
suspect in ill health, and although was once married, only produced
daughters. Once he passes away, it seems that every one of the Isle of
Wight Chiddy surname will be gone.
Some of them I am pretty sure came across to the mainland and became
Chidley. I am unable to prove that however, as there were a lot of John
Chiddys and John Chidleys at the same time and I suspect they became
mixed.
The greatest number of Chiddys are from the
Somerset/Avon/Gloucestershire area where the name originated.
I have some research on a Chiddy convict.. if anyone has a convict I'd
be pleased to pass it on. He ended up in Australia where he stayed. Let
me know your interests and I'll pass it on.
Please, do post something everyone so that we get to know what each of
us is researching, and that will be lodged in the archives!
Debbie Beavis
