Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
First to Debbie et al, HI, yes there are some more of us 'out there'. I have been subscribed for some time now, just never saw enough traffic or anything to respond to. The fact the Chiddy covers so many variations could be part of it. (I'm really only interested in CHIDLEY)
Second to Jennifer, try www.familysearch.org , I tried a search on Henry Chidlow with 10 hits. None look like the one you want but its a start.
Third, Chiddy? I came across an interesting 'fact' in a commercial family name article. It said that old, as in 1600, English names came from the given name and where they were from.
For example, Robin of Sherwood Forest would come to be know as Robin Sherwood. The 'of' being dropped in English names. Similarly of = O' for Irish names or Mac for Scottish.
Therefor it claimed that someone from the village of Chidlow (in Devonshire) would be known as someone of Chidlow. Or in short someone of Chidlow was referred to as a Chidley. Spelling, accents and pronunciation being what they are it said that Chidlow, Chidley, Chiddy, Chudley, Chudleigh and others were all probably people from the village of Chidlow. I can make no claims to the truth of this, since I have never seen it documented in a reputable source, but it does make a great story.
it does make a great =
story.
Hi Jennifer and welcome to the list. There is currently just three of us
I'm said to say!
The list has been running for months and I had given up hope of anyone
else joining me! I'm afraid I cannot help with any Chidlows as my own
surname interest is Chiddy. Not sure how far back the Chidlow name
split from the main Chiddy but I'd be interested to know how far back
you have Chidlows.
All the best... do tell anyone else you know who has email, that we
exist! I'm afraid the messages are going to be few and far between. I
have chosen to answer you on list rather than privately because now
that I know the archives are online, it could be that others will
investigate us and read our messages, and decide to join!
Do tell us about yourself... for myself, Chiddy was my mother's maiden
name.
Debbie Beavis
I am new to this list... Any chance that anyone knows anything about
Chidlow? Specifically a Henry Chidlow born May 11, 1880 in Shropshire,
England. Moved to Canada sometime between 1905 and 1907.
Regards,
Jennifer Chidlow
Hi Della
I am delighted to hear from you but the sad fact is that now it is only
you and me! The person who was also subbed turned out to be interested
in Chitty...despite the welcome message!
So... I am delighted to hear from you, but we are going to be talking
amongst ourselves! I am quite disappointed to find that nobody else has
subbed for so long... I was on the point of forgetting the whole thing!
My Chiddys were the Isle of Wight ones. I wonder how much you know about
the origin of the name, and the spread of the family? Are you in the US?
I am in the UK. My mother was a Chiddy who married a Harvey,
coincidentally, but my Harveys were from Cornwall.
I look forward to hearing from you again. Do keep in touch!
All the best
Debbie Beavis
