Hi Lisa,
William Chick and his wife Mary Paine were my g.g.g.grandparents and I am descended from Henry Thomas Chick, their son, and his wife Jane Lyon.I don't know a huge amount about William and Mary's children but here goes! Henry Thomas, his younger brother Spencer Jefferson and William and Mary moved to London when the dockyards in Portsea lost work at the end of the Napoleonic War, and lived in Reynolds Court in Cripplegate which was a slum area.Henry and Spencer were tobacco pipe makers, presumably clay pipes, and both died in poverty,Spencer in Mile End workhouse.Henry's wife Jane Lyon was listed as a pauper charwoman in the census after his death but later remarried. Other brothers William and John were both transported, William for theft of Cochineal and John for highway robbery( he was sentenced to death but it was commuted to transportation for life). The eldest brother Richard Russel was executed at the Old Bailey in 1829 as a "notorious criminal"---there are num!
erous reports of his execution in various newspapers of the time.I don't know anything about the sisters Eliza and Mary.Henry had nine children, among them my g.grandfather George Edmund who at the time of his death was a lamplighter. Spencer also had several children---if you look them up on a census, look under Theresa CHEEK,his daughter.William was a harness maker before he was transported .There is a transcript of his trial available online. My younger son has emigrated to Austalia with his family and lives near Brisbane---yet more Chick descendants ,
Regards,
Alison

Hi Lisa
Marita was my first cousin, second daughter of Jack and Dina Bardenhagen nee Chick, a daughter of Peter Chadwick Chick, my grandfather. Marita was an historian and president of the Launceston Historical Society. We were reacquainted 10 years ago when she was researching another convict ancestor on our grandmother's side and I was able to help with research in London. She published work on the convicts and on bush nursing in Tasmania.
I have put together a narrative about the Chicks if you are interested?
Phillip

Hi Alison,
I have found that William the convict was my g.g.g.grandfather. We are descendant through Charles Crowther, son of William. I have found alot of variations on the children of William & Mary Paine, are you able to shed some light on their list of children? I'm not sure whether you have any information on William & Elizabeth Watts as i noticed that Charles Crowther was born before they were married, i couldn't find any birth records to confirm this and that William was his father. What happened to the rest of the family your g.g.grandfather included, back in England after William and John were transported?
kind regards,
Lisa

Hello Phillip,
I am the grand-daughter of Mervyn. It is fascinating reading, I found the war records on Peter, Clifford & Charles, my mother said that your grand-father Peter was helped out by Simpson & his donkey at Gallipoli when he was injured. I found the Old Bailey records on William which was great reading. My mother doesn't know alot about the Chicks as they lived in Yolla, hence she only found out about William the convict this year when i started researching. Sorry for my ignorance but who is Marita Bardenhagen connected to?
Lisa
