I am seeking to make contact with any descendant or researcher of John
CHICK, who farmed in Compton Valence, Dorset, England, in the mid - 1800s.
John CHICK, was born in Stratton, Dorset, about 1831, baptized there on June
5, 1831, a son of John CHICK and Amelia DAVIS. Jane Greenham Stone MAYO
was born in Poxwell, Dorset, about 1839. In Q2 of 1862, in Weymouth
district (BMD ref: 5a / 567), John CHICK and Jane MAYO were married. In
the 1871 census, John 39 was a farmer of 1,200 acres in Compton Valence,
Dorset, enumerated with Jane 31, and children. At the 1881 census, John
CHICK 49 was a yeoman farmer of 1,200 acres in Compton Valence, Dorset,
living with wife Jane 41, John 10, William 9, Kathleen 8 and Florence 1. In
the 1891 census, John was 59, head, farmer in Compton Valence, with Jane 58,
John jr 20, William 19 and Kathleen 18 at home. In the 1901 census, John 69
was farming in Compton Valence with Kathleen 28, single, while Jane 61 was a
patient in St. Marylebone, London, and Florence 21 was living nearby. A
m.i. in Compton Valence shows John CHICK 75 buried in 1907 and Jane CHICK 90
buried in 1930, in the same grave. John and Jane had issue, all their
children being born and baptized in Compton Valence:
a. Amelia CHICK, baptized on March 15th., 1863 (IGI
extracted); living on her parents' farm for the 1871 census; Amelia 11
died in Q1 of 1874 in Dorchester district (BMD ref: 5a / 254).
b. Alice Jane CHICK, born about 1864; Alice 6 was at
her parents' farm for the 1871 census; in the Q4 of 1890, in Dorchester
district (BMD ref: 5a / 725), she married William ROPER, who was born about
1856 in Mappercombe, a son of Norris ROPER, yeoman; William was a yeoman of
Lettlebredy, who died there in 1902; William and Alice had issue.
c. John CHICK, baptized on August 26th., 1866; John,
aged 7 days, buried on August 27th., 1866.
d. Annie CHICK, baptized on November 21st., 1867 (IGI
extracted); the death of Annie CHICK 1, in Dorchester district, in Q2 of
1869 was recorded;
e. John Henry CHICK, baptized on July 13th., 1870; in
the 1901 census John H. 30, single, born in Compton Valence, was a farmer in
Lower Wynford Farmhouse, Wynford Eagle, Dorset, with no close family;
f. William Davis CHICK, born approximately 1871; the
birth of William Davis CHICK was registered in Dorchester district in Q3 of
1871; William 19 was living with his parents in Compton Valence for the
1891 census; cannot find him in the 1901 census;
g. Kathleen CHICK, born approximately 1873; [the birth
of a Kathleen CHICK in Dorchester district was registered in Q3 of 1873];
in the 1901 census Kathleen 28 was single, living in Compton Valence,
Dorset, with her father.
h. Florence CHICK, baptized on November 13th., 1879 (IGI
extracted); living on own means in St. Marylebone, London, at the 1901
census.
