By marriage only (John and Thurza). I pursued it further because of the prison tidbit and the close physical proximity of the families. I was finally able to trace the White ancestry, but my Hideckers, who married into the family, are still a mystery. It's been nice talking with you. Happy hunting!

Yes, it was the 1855 state census. And I only found it by going page-by-page in the book (printed copy) I found at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. She's not listed in the index. She was my great-grandmother.
I knew why her father was in the almshouse. I hate to judge. I don't know what started him down that road. I do wish I could find our more about Frances' mother, Catherine Rouse. She is definitely a brick wall for me. I have not been able to find her marriage record to John Elliston, nor who her parents were. Even though Frances was raised by the Chichesters, she knew her sisters and knew who her parents were (they were listed in her death record). I have no idea if the adoption was formal, but I suspect not. I've not found any records for it.
So how are the Whites related to the Chichesters?

I had Frances in my database, but never followed through because the Chichester's were too far removed from my direct line. I am descended from a sister of John White, and I had been following him in hopes of finding clues to my White ancestors. I have not seen the state census where Frances is listed as "adopted" -- was this 1855? Do you think it was a "formal" adoption? I did some census work yesterday and apparently Frances was the fourth daughter born to John and Catherine. I think you are correct about the children's mother dying. The almshouse record lists John as intemperate and not likely to recover, which may be why the children were not with him.

I am actually related to Frances Elliston, the "adopted" daughter of Consider and Mary Ann. I had no idea about the Chichesters until the NY State census that listed Frances Elliston as their adopted daughter. Prior to that I just couldn't find her in census records until after her marriage to Samuel Campbell.
I'm sorry that I have no further info on the Chichesters than what I posted already. I'd like to know more to try to find out if they were related somehow, or how Frances came to live with them. I think her mother died soon after her birth, but I have no proof. She and her sisters were all farmed out. Her father was still alive, but he didn't have his children with him, and he appears on later census records with his mother. After his mother's death he died in an almshouse.

I think Consider also had a sister Thurza (1815-1897) who was first married to Perez Hitchcock (c1822-c1864), and later to John White (1791-1877). In 1846 Perez was imprisoned in Sing Sing Prison for life for murdering his father but pardoned in Aug 1859. Do you have any more information on these individuals? Would you happen to have any photos of the Chichesters?

Hello. I have replied once before to this post and I am hoping someone will respond. Since my last post, I have had a researcher in Alexandria looking into James Henry Chichester. Some people have had his father listed as Daniel McCarty Chichester. I can say after her research, that if Daniel McCarty is James's father, he is definitely illegitimate. Another researcher recently gave me info that James' father was Richard McCarty Chichester, brother of Daniel. I have not looked into this further but the Chichester family of VA are very well documented and Richard McCarty married Ann Mason and their children are documented as being 4 children and none of them with the name of James Henry. Marilyn...I would really like to speak with you as I am very interested in the information you have on Patsey's family. I have not found much on her but am thinking her father may have been Saul Martin.
Anyway, I have some various documents and such for James and Patsey and children but not much on James. He is quite elusive!
I am starting a Chichester project and have asked a Great Uncle to submit DNA. I am hoping that this will somehow connect our James to the VA Chichester family. I am hoping that all who have commented on this thread will reply so that we can share info. And if any Chichester reading this is a known descendant of the Virginia Chichester family (not of James) who might be willing to submit DNA samples -that would be wonderful! :)
