My great grandmother was Rhoda Chidester and until this week that was
all I knew. With some luck and the LDS web site, I have found out a lot
more in the past two weeks. I now have enough information to be
dangerous and ask questions.
I received a letter from Lois Salmans which describes the ancestors of
Rhoda Ann Chidester and I have confirmed much of the information at the
Archives.
Rhoda was born 1 Mar 1865 in Waterford, Washington, OH. Her father was
Thomas George Chidester (b. Aug 1837 in Morgan, OH; d Jun 1904). Her
mother was Lydia Wilson (b. 1834 in OH; d bef 1880 in OH.)
Thomas George's father was Abraham Chidester (b 1814 in PA) and his
mother was Mary Elizabeth Griffith (b. 1817 in OH).
Abraham's father may have been Richard Chidester (b. ca 1782). (This
last is speculative and based on a reference to Abraham and Richard's
son Richard being cousins.)
Anyway, it turns out that Thomas George Chidester was a Civil War
veteran and I started to look up some information to gather the
documents. I did not find any reference to a pension for him but I found
a lot of Chidester's in the OH Index to Civil War Service Records.
Unless someone objects, I plan on posting the lists in the next few
days. (Fairly short. 25 on the Civil War Service Records and 7 on the
pension list.)
I will also post a more complete family group sheet for each of the
families as I have them.
If anyone recognizes the families or is related I would love to
correspond and trade information. Rhoda has living descendants in the
Lima and Delphos area.

Hello all,
Looking for anyone descended from a Chichester born in NY state from 1790 to
1840. My focus is on Upstate NY Chichesters (at least for now). Some of the
known names are:
Samuel Chichester born 1801, mother Rebecca, father unknown. Mother Rebecca
married Simeon Fowler. Samuel mentioned in the will of a Munson
Parker(1808). Samuel married Susanah Andrus(Andrews?) and reared a large
family. Some of you out there will no doubt recognize this one!
James Chichester born about 1755. This is my line. Parents unkown, may have
come from Ct. Married Lavinia (Huston?). Appears on a list of the 11th
Regiment of Volunteers in Albany Co. NY 1777. Also on this list is a Samuel
Chichester (Not the same as above). James lived in Coxsackie Greene Co.
until about 1825 then moved to Schoharie Co. Lived until after 1840!
The Samuel Chichester on the Volunteer list with James (perhaps a brother)
perhaps married Abigail Stanton and lived in Coeymans, Albany Co. Abigail
may have died early and Samuel married Zervia (Sophia) Osborne. Samuel
probably died before 1784.
John Chichester born about 1779 in Albany Co. I have a sneaky idea he may be
a son of the Samuel Chichester (brother of James?), but can not prove it!
John married a woman named Sophia and also moved to Schoharie Co.
There is also a Samuel Chidester, born about 1760 who married (1) Mary, then
(2) Amelia Williams in 1798. Had many children in Greene Co. Any of you
descended from him?
I also know of a Daniel and David Chichester in Ballstown, (then Albany Co)
in 1790. Also a Jeremiah in Albany Co. and another Jeremiah in Rennselaer!
And a line of Chichesters from a William in Otsego Co. Any one recognize
these names?
If any of you know of any of these guys, or of any other early upstate NY
Chi's, please email with what you know about them. I am compiling a census
research paper that may include stories on some early Chichester!
