We have been led to the Cheyne family website through many references tnat basically say that my family name, Cheney, was derived from the original family name, Cheyne. Many other family name spellings were alluded to have originally been Cheynes, but we are interested in how and mostly where my family name changed from Cheyne to Cheney. We think that the change took place in the U.K., as the earliest ancestor that we know of was supposed to come from Southampton, a port near the south coast of England. His name was Albert Cheney, and he arrived in the United States of America between 1825 and 1845. We have no idea of his history in the U.K. Southampton, for all we know, may have just been where he got on the boat to leave England. We have not looked through all the ships records in order to find his name on any manifests.
We looked through the database of the Cheyne family and found no Cheneys in the list. Are there some Cheneys that you know about that are not in the list? We would appreciate any light that you could shed on this matter.
