Dear Cuzzins: There is a Reginald CHEYNE listed in THE DECLARATION OF
ARBROATH 1320 at:
http://www.constitution.org/scot/arbroath.htm
Perhaps some of you connect back to him.
Good hunting - good luck! Shirley: bobert(a)panacom.com
Thank you Sharron for you information. Yes, would you please let us know
about the castles of the Cheyne's. Their web sites would be wonderful to look
at.
Thank you,

Hello everyone;

Thank you so much for this amazingly in-depth and well-researched site -- my
grandmother has been researching the Cheyne family history for about 20 odd
years but the family trees have helped fill the gaps!! My grandmother - Ivy
Greta Paterson of Dunedin, New Zealand is the daughter of Margaret Blair
Abley who is a direct descendant of James Auchinlek Cheyne - she too has
passed on the AF Cheyne's 'The Cheynes of Scotland' which gives the
Inverugie history - and this weekend I am visiting the ruins of Inverugie,
the tower of Esslemont, and hopefully the Tower of Ackergill - did you know
of all the family connections to these Castles in Scotland? (as well as many
others!) I am sure you do, but if not please let me know and I can give you
all the website addresses for them - they were all owned by branches of the
Cheyne families. There is also a connection with Charles Cheyne and Lady
Jayne Cheyne who were the Lord and Lady of the Manor of Chelsea, London -
she was the daughter of the Earl of Newcastle and and he by marriage, became
the Marquis of Newhaven. Charles Cheyne came from the county of Bucks, from
Drayton Beauchamp I think, and they sold the Manor of Chelsea to Sir Hans
Sloane in 1712. Lady Jayne Cheyne was a great benefactor of the Old Chelsea
Church, in Old Church Street and there is a statue and tomb of her inside
the church which I have seen.
As you will probably know from AF Cheyne's research, the Cheynes were
prominent landowners in Southern England - ie Buckinghamshire and Chelsea
before moving up to Scotland, but surely this must be the other way round -
since the Cheynes of Inverugie were prominent well before the 1600s when the
Cheynes of Chelsea were around. But apparently they are connected! Do you
know of this connection? Can you add any information to it at all? Any
help would be appreciated, and when I have the papers in front of me, I will
give you my family lineage, which is connected to the Huntly branch of the
Cheynes who came to Dunedin, New Zealand. I look forward to hearing from
you.
Regards, Sharron Ward (London).
