Dawna:
I don't have any information for you about Lon Chaney, but for your
information, "O" was the common abbreviation for "Ohio" before the Post
Office went to the two-letter designations for each state.
I keep a Road Atlas (Rand McNally is better than the AAA for my purposees)
next to my desk. It is handy for looking up counties and towns. There is
both a Carroll County and a Fairfield County in present-day Ohio. There is
also a Carrollton in Ohio. The county as well as the town names may have
changed in the interveving years since the records you have discovered.

Hi everyone!
A cousin just dropped in my e-mail this weekend to give me
wonderful news! She too is descended from Isaac Augustus Chaney,
she has informed me that Isaac's father is Levy.
I have only briefly corresponded with her via a few e-mails and am
not even sure yet where she found me. She may even be on this
group.
So far, I have learned that Levy and Isaac were living in SC in Lexington
County SC in 1830.
Just seen in SC index for Orangeburgh SC a Levy and a David Chaney in
1800. (Not sure if this is him yet?)
Levy Chaney died Feb 1837, as taken from the family bible
.I had a copy of the names and dates of the Isaac Family bible, all this time
I did not know what it was for sure. So, in error I called it "an old letter".
The
only person listed on it that I never could place for sure was Levy Chaney died
the 13th day of February 1837, I had speculated that this unknown person was
in fact a son of Isaac and Catherine. I was under the impression that Isaac's
father was also an Isaac. It turns out that his grandfather might be!
Below is her letter to me with the vital info.
I then searched for Levy and Isaac in South
Carolina and found them in Lexington County, SC in 1830 and Isaac and
family there in 1840.
Isaac was living next door to Elizabeth Chaney who must be his mother.
Catherine's (Williamson) parents were already in Newton County in 1840. I have
a
picture of Bailey Chaney and Mary Martha Chaney Harrison. Isaac, Jr.
died during the Civil War. Charles was said to have "gone to Texas" but
I have not traced him.
As to Isaac's death date - he is mentioned in the Beulah Baptist Church
minutes as follows:
"Oct. 25, 1858
The Door of the Church being opened at Isaac Chaney's house he was
received by experience for baptism and was baptized and received into
the full fellowship of the church. Also received Saturday night by
experience for baptism Charles Chaney. Sunday received by experience
for baptism Catherine Chaney-also a slave of the Chaneys named Beliza
and Mary Chaney."
The later three were baptized on Sunday. I suspect that Isaac was sick
and perhaps dieing when he joined the church and was baptized. I've
read these minutes over and over and have never seen another occasion
when they opened the doors of the church at someone's house. Anyway, we
know that Isaac was still alive on Oct. 25, 1858. I suspect he died
sometime shortly thereafter. He was never mentioned in the minutes
again although the other family members were mentioned frequently.
Bailey was a deacon for years. Harriet Jerushia (named for Catherine's
sisters, by the way) was once "kicked" out for fornication! Her husband
died probably during the Civil War but I have never checked to be sure.
<End >
So thrilled to have made a connection!! I have looked at my lonely family
for along time sitting all by themselves. It is nice to know they did not just
fall out of a tree! :)
I will send along the particulars of Levy Chaney when I find out more, hopefully
in the next few days! I am so excited to have found a cousin, and a fellow
researcher of this line.
Thanks for your time,
Dawna
A book that has Lon Chaney Sr (Actor) and forebearers in it?
I had heard that there is one, does anyone know the name?
Of course I have heard the "rumor" that Lon Chaney was related
to my family. I do not know how.
So far I have only collected this on his line, which is not much.
Taken from a email I sent my mother.
Emma Alice Chaney md Frank H.Chaney He was born April 3,1859 (He did not attend
School as deaf,although he
could have been) b. in Carroll, Fairfield Co O -I don't know what the O is
Oregon? or a typo? He died Apr 11,1927 in CA
The Children:
1.Jonathan Orange Chaney b.August 5,1879 d.1946 CA
2.Lon b.April 1,1883 CO died August 26,1930 CA (I know he had a different first
name!)
3.Earl b.May 14,1887 CO d.July 7,1887 CA
4.Caroline "Carrie" b.Dec 20,1889 d.Sept 5, 1960 Minn.
5.George b.Jun 10,1893 died Dec 26,1984 CA
And then I also have Lon Chaney Jr. 1906-1973 Birthname :Creighton born Feb
10,1906 Oklahoma Ok
Could you ask Dad, How far back did this rumor go? I will bet--that it came in
OK somehow. Perhaps
someone married into that line?
Well this is really not a bad start. I just fell into this one. I found a link
thru CO to the Genindex and found
a Lon and went to it--it took me to
http://www.henge.com/~holsclaw/deafblind/stutable.htm
where I printed off 10 pages of the kids enrolled. I pulled the dates of the
actual people from the Genindex.
This is what I figure: the family went to OK about 1916--so that means Lon was
10 in OK. And Lon Sr was
already an Actor.
John Marcus Chaney--and Luna could have met them when she ran the hotel?
If there is a book that details his forebearers I would rather get ahold of one,
rather
than try and research a line that is already done.
Thanks
Dawna
Sorry it has taken me forever to respond to my email of last week.
Thank you Suzanne for checking. I do not recognize any of the other
names you mentioned. If I see anything I will pass it on to you.
I had seen in one of the SC books that an Abraham or Nathan had
married a ___Cheatham. Thought the two might somehow be connected.
Thank you for all the information on your line. I keep everything I find, in
case one day I might connect it somehow. It's a terrible addiction! :)
If anyone would like to visit my website which features my known Chaney line
you can stop by at http://members.xoom.com/dawna777/
Would love to connect!

I made a mistake in my earlier post today. Cora McGowan Chaney was my great-
grandmother, not great-great. My generational math wasn't working this
morning.
Suzanne Collins Matson
Hi Dawna,
I have no Abraham Chaney anywhere in my notes. I went back through my notes
today. According to information (original source unknown) received from my
aunt, John Nathan Chaney and Sarah G. Cheatham were Simeon Chaney's parents.
Supposedly Simeon was married twice-first wife name unknown and second-Susan
Day. I am not certain and haven't found thus far any sources to indicate two
wives. So I don't know how the children should be divided between mothers or
even divided at all. The children are James Simeon, Ranson, Elmore, John,
Emily, Willis, Mary, Jemima, and Sarah. James Simeon and Willis I am certain
were the sons of Simeon and Susan. I have photocopies of their military
records from NARA. Willis was killed and his file has the letters written by
his father to collect his last pay. I also have a photocopy of a letter
written from VA by James Simeon to his parents and siblings in which he
mentions Willis. There may be other children-the ones listed above are the
ones known to me from my aunt's information.
There is a Chaney family cemetery in Greenwood County, but I don't know the
location. One of James Simeon's daughters, Cora McGowan Chaney (my great-
greatgrandmother), is buried at Bethlehem Cemetery in Coronaca, Greenwood
County, South Carolina.
Does this strike a chord with anyone?

Sorry about that, I guess I should explain about the
book. I did put the address and info to obtain in a

It is Called The CHANEY Family Register
Southern Branch
(VA-NC-SC-AL-MS-LA-AR-TX-TN)
Copyright 1991
On the first page: "Being a List of Kinsmen who can most probally
be placed as Descendants of James Chaney and Mary Johnson Young
who are said to have been from Northern Virginia and 96 South Carolina
to Woodville, Mississippi and nearby area of Mississippi and Louisiana.
One son and several of his children stayed in South Carolina. Other sons
and grandsons moved to parts of Alabama.
Afterwards, many descendants lived in Alabama, Arkansas,Louisiana,Mississippi,
South Carolina,Texas and other parts of the United States.
This register is a current printout of the on-going effort to document the
relationships of this
extended family.
(The author earnestly solicits updates, corrections, and any other pertinent
information
concerning any members of this extended group)"
She does state that the register is to be just that. It is not a Family
Biography or a Family
history. (Hopefully, those will come soon.)
Okay, enough for now! She researched for 10-15 years and did not find one shred
of evidence
that James Chaney and Mary Johnson (widow Young) were the parents of
John,William,James Jr,
Bailey,George and a daughter who married a BECHAM,BECKAM, or BECKHAM???
They were often seen as a family unit. And has taken that as a starting point.

Hi Suzanne!
Great! Thank you, I had nothing on him other than the name.
I will have to dig out my notes.
When I emailed the researcher that wrote the register and we could not
connect. I passed this onto her, and she knew of 3 listed in the Abbeville
district but did not know the others.
> "A New Index To Abstract's of Old 96 and Abbeville District Wills and Bonds"
> Which list Abraham,Elizabeth (Betsy),Emily,James,John,John F,Mary,Nathan,
> Priscilla,Robert,Robert Elmore,Simeon,Thomas Chaney.
In her email she writes: (Carolyn Cloud Stanley)
I know the will of James; it names Betsy and Priscilla (wife and dau, in
one order or the other). Family tradition tells us that "James died of
wounds he got in the Rev War." I don't know who the others are; I will
see if I can correlate any of those with names in my notes.
Is Abraham in Simeon's line?
The reason I ask is biblically Isaac is son to Abraham and Sarah.
(grasping at straws on that one!)
More later....
Thanks
Dawna

Hello, Seekers:
Someone mentioned THE CHANEY FAMILY REGISTER in a recent msg. Never
heard of this one. Where does one buy it, the address, etc. - how much
does it cost? How is the data compiled - does it cover all states or
which ones? I'm sure there are other seekers who don't know about the
'Register...please share the answer with entire list. Thank you.

Hi, The only Va Chaney family mentioned is James Chaney arrived in Northern
Virginia (Possibly near Leesburg) and married Mary Johnson (Widow Young).
She starts the book with that she accepts the wide-spread notion that
James Chaney and his wife Mary JOHNSON (Widow YOUNG)of Fairfax and/0r
Loudoun Co Va were the parents of William,George,Bailey,John,James Jr, and
a daughter who married a man named BECHAM.
John b.1740 (or 1732) VA, d. 1811 SC
William b.ca 1733 VA d.ca 1815, Cambridge SC
James Jr b ???? d. 1782 (killed during REV WAR)
Bailey b. ca 1741 VA d. 1821
George b. ca
Daughter (who married BECHAM,BECKAM)
When we were corresponding she indicated that new information has come in
since the publishing of the manuscript. And that she now believes that John of
Va was the father to James.
The book is mostly about these descendants of the son's of James. And the line
that come's off of William Fendon Chaney in SC > LA >MS.
This probally will not help you much. Very little information about the VA
Chaney's
are detailed.

I have this on Simeon Chaney: was born in VA 8 Jun 1797; moved to Abbeville
County, SC in 1808; a member of Siloan (sic) Baptist Church until death 23 Sep
1870. The above church should be Siloam Baptist Church. The above
information was taken from The Working Christian as abstracted in Marriage and
Death Notices from Baptist Newspapers of South Carolina Volume 2: 1866-1887,
published 1996, compiler and editor Brent H. Holcomb, p. 29. I've read Siloam
Baptist Church's early minutes on microfilm; they are not very complete and
skip many years but Chaneys are mentioned frequently in the minutes that are
present. A 1871 membership list mentions Simeon Chaney as dead. Possibly the
same person? Also somewhere in the Washington Court of Equity papers, there
is mention of Simeon Chaney as a neighbor of Joseph Hill( I think in 1825).
I'll have to search for that reference. I think it is an abstract as well.
My particular interest at this time is trying to move from Simeon back to
Virginia.
Some notes given to one of my aunts by my grandfather state that Simeon's
father was named John Nathan Chaney. I have no proof of this.

Hello! Your names do not ring any bells with me, however I would be
quite interested in the Chancy Family Register that you mentioned.
Where did you purchase it? Thanks. My Ggrandmother was Julia Chaney, a
Cherokee, who married Joseph Willis Valentine of Stokes Co. NC. She is
a absolute mystery to me. I do know that she existed. I found her
grave and I have a loan document that she signed in 1880. I am grasping
at straws for any research modes that may give me a clue.

Hi! Thank you for answering. I looked in the "register" and there is no Julia
Chaney listed. The only Valentine in the index is Barry Valentine who md Judith
Kaye Whitehead. This would be much after 1880. No dates are listed for her.
My mother ordered the book from somewhere, I am not sure where she got it.
But, In the front of the book is the address to the compiler:

Wish you luck with your search. I wish I could help further. For anyone else
that would like me to look-up in the index of the register just let me know.

Hi, I do not know if this is related but sure worth a shot. I have not been on
this list long. And have not formally entered a query on this family yet on this
group.
My oldest Chaney ancestor so far is Isaac Augustus Chaney b. July 16,1803 in SC
(The date has not been confirmed)died abt 1856 Newton County MS.
Arrived in MS about 1837/1838 timeperiod. Not found until 1850 Cenus.
Catherine Anne WILLIAMSON b.March 26,1810 SC d.August 17,1892 MS
Children:ARCHIBALD b.Aug 17,1827 SC,CHARLES b.Dec 4,1830 SC,HENRY I(E)RBIN
b.Dec 29, 1832, BAILEY b.Dec 15,1834 SC, MARY M. b. Aug 12,1836 MS, JAMES
H.TIEDEWAY b. Jan 3,1839, HARRIET (1st name Sarah? middle name Jurushia) b.Nov
10,1842 MS, ISAAC AUGUSTUS JR b.May 15,1845 MS, JULIE ANNE AMANDER CHANEY b.Nov
29,1846 MS
The dates were obtained from an old letter that was sent to us regarding this
family. It was not said as to how this info was obtained or if accurate.
I do have a copy of the "Chaney Family Register" compiled and edited by
Carolyn Cloud Stanley 1991 and have found no match yet. She took a look
at my family line a few weeks ago, and could find no definite match either.
Although there were some naming similarities.
So, I was restarting my search to look more closely at the Simeon,Nathan, and
Robert listed in the SC abstracts of Wills.
Is any of this familiar to anyone?
Thank you!

Hello Declan and welcome;
Thankyou for the homepage comment although much of my early information is
thanks to Jim Cheyne who has a massive Cheyne database. His webpage and the
Cheyne webpage are both linked from the bottom of my Cheyne webpage.
Jim (cheyne(a)goodnet.com) may be able to do a search of his database for your
Christian Cheyne. I am going to copy this message to the Cheyne email group
which you are welcome to join by submitting an email to
CHEYNE-L-request(a)rootsweb.com ,leave the subject blank and place the message
SUBSCRIBE in the body. You won't receive a lot of email, as we are a quiet
group, but you will be able to ask questions and communicate with some 50
others who are all researching the Cheyne surname. The address, once you
are subscribed, for emailing to the group is CHEYNE-L(a)rootsweb.com Note
that only people who are subscribed members can email to the group. This
avoids junk mail.
Good luck with your search,
Wendy.

Hello everyone;
I received some junk mail today that may be of interest to some in this
group. Below is the message. Wendy.
------------
We have a beautifuuly crafted hand-drawn map of THE CLANS, FAMILIES
AND MAJOR BATTLEFIELDS OF SCOTLAND and the name CHEYNE is prominently
featured on it to the north of Aberdeen.
We know that direct advertising can cause offence but we feel that
the map will appeal to both genealogists and historians alike. Apart
from locating over 300 names, the map also features the main
towns,rivers and glens.
As such it doubles as a work of art and an informative, highly
detailed document which has already received much praise from all
over the world.
We have a website http://www.borderart.com where it can be seen,
along with our other products.
Could I repeat that we are not a big business; this is really a hobby
that has grown out of my own interest in Scottish /Borders history
and genealogy
May thanks for your time,
Hugh Dias (Border Art)
After many years of hard work for the Cheynes in forming the CHEYNE-L list
and designing and maintaining the Webpage at RootsWeb for all of us, Derick
Hartshorn is moving on to other interests. I know that without his
knowledge and energy neither of these would be here today. We each owe a
BIG THANK YOU to him.
Effective today Wendy Chizek will be the Mail Master and I will be the Web
Master. We both feel that we can not fill Derick's shoes, but we will do
our best.
I have transferred my Cheyne Family database from my page to RootsWeb and
have added a button to access it. I think that all the links are OK, but if
anyone encounters a 404 error, please let me know. I plan to modify the
Opening Page, but that will take place over time.
Wendy and I would like your suggestions on how to revitalize the list. We
have several new members and we hope that they will help in that regard.
One way we may do that is to provide a page on the Webpage for News items
from the membership. Births, Marriages, Deaths, Moves, Promotions, New
Business started, Interesting articles found on the Web or elsewhere or
other topics of interest.
What are your thoughts?? What do you want to see?? How can you help??
This is your mailing list and Webpage, so please provide your input.
Thanks again to Derick. Please drop him a personal note to let him know how
much his work is and was appreciated.
Yours aye,
Jim Cheyne
