Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Dear list subscriber,
Many folks have wondered who RootsWeb is and how they are
able to sponsor over 1500 lists plus home pages for the USGenWeb
project. This recent posting will give you an idea of how a concept
has grown and prospered without any visible means of support.
Should you choose to strengthen the project through a coercion-free
donation, the address is on the bottom.

Hi all. I am looking for information as to the siblings and parents of
William CHANEY born about 1831 who married Drucilla CLARK 8 Sept. 1852 in
Pulaski county, KY. Also looking for Drucilla's ancestors. Her parents
were Thomas CLARK and Permelta PHELPS.
Appreciate any help.

Dear Cheyne cousins,
You may have received a post from GenForum offering the opportunity to post
to a CHEYNE mail list. The US GenWeb Project has recently had many problems
with this organization allegedly plagarizing many surname lists that they
host. In most cases, GenForum appears to have copied all the responses that
have come to existing lists and pasted them on their page. The 1,000+ list
owners on US GenWeb have condemned this practice by concensus. You are free
to use their facilities, if you desire, but they have gathered their data by
copying it in its entirety from the US GenWeb project, RootsWeb and others.
I think it is time that I bring you up to date on issues that before this
becomes off-topic for our list.
GenForum did not request that the name CHEYNE be put on their page. They set
this page up and tried to post to all list subscribers. As this is a private
list (all postings must come from subscribers), they have been unsuccessful
in contacting all individuals.
As a result of complaints by listowners, GenForum removed the variations
that were posted on their web pages without removing the "root" surname, to
me a tacit admission that the charges were true. As well, they removed all
messages that had been posted on their site by anyone who mentioned anything
about mailing lists, probably as result of the complaints by list owners.
As well, many who posted comments at the web site were warned, if they
contained the phrase "RootsWeb" in the message (and several other keywords
associated with existing mailing lists), that their message contained
objectionable language and that if they continued, their internet service
provider would be notified. This is a highly unethical parctice!
Some believe that GenForum's goal is to have a web site with a high visitor
count so that they can attract advertising dollars. If anyone from the
CHEYNE-L list has questions about this please feel free to contact me.
The guiding force behind RootsWeb, Dr. Brian Leverich, recently posted the
following to list owners on the network he serves. It reads as follows:
------------------
>As many of you are aware, GENFORUM.COM spammed all the RootsWeb lists tonight.
>
>It killed our mail server, and judging by the e-mail we've received it
irritated a lot >of folks.
>
>Here's what we've done at RootsWeb:
>
>We captured and killed as much of the spam as we could, and I'm trying to
bring the >mail server back on line.
>
>I've written to Cliff Shaw to tell him we'll be sending him a bill for
damages after we >clean up the wreckage, and we expect him to pay promptly.
>
>I've also written to all the upstream providers of his Internet connection,
asking them >to share a personal growth opportunity with him.
>
>What a sleaze. *sigh* -B

Does anyone on the mailing list use MS Internet Explorer?
If so, would you please e-mail me the file named MSHTKM16.DLL
Mine seems to be corrupted and I am "dead in the water" on the net.
Please help.
