Hello,
I'm looking for the parents of William Chaney, born about 1655,
Middlesex Co., VA, married to Penelope Payne. I had always
believed Richard and Charity Chaney of Anne Arundel Co., MD
to be the parents of William but today I found a Robert
Chaney transported by Richard Cocke in 1639 listed in "Early
Virginia Families along the James River." Can anyone help
solve this mystery?
Are Richard and Robert related? If there are any other
descendants of William and Penelope out there, I would love
to exchange information. I am descended from their son,
Thomas and his wife Jane Swepstone, also of Middlesex Co., VA.
Pleas reply to my e-mail as I will be unsubbing for Christmas
break.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Has anyone tried tracing the immigrant Richard Cheyney back to Ireland?
If there is anything out there on it I would like to know about it.

My husband is descended from the elusive Greenberry Chaney. For years I believed him to
be Greenbury b 1713 son of Charles Cheney & Ann Jones. Somehow the dates didn't match &
it just didn't quite fit together. The generations didn't quite fit.
I went to the library yesterday & they had some new books on Maryland. One titled
GENEALOGY & LOCAL HISTORY & EARLY MAPS OF MARYLAND, DELEWARE, SOUTHERN PENNSYLVANIA,
VIRGINIA, WASHINGTON DC. By Jordan vol 4 p 240-260 was of the Cheney family. It only
deals with the family in Maryland, but it shows descent through 2 different lines of
Greenberry's & one matches up to mine just perfect.
Besides the Greenbury descended from Charles, there is another line that goes:
Richard Cheney & Charity with 2nd wife Eleanor father of Thomas b1669 below
Richard Cheney & Mary
Benjamin Chaney b 1687 m1719 Ruth Cheney b 1702 - dau of Thomas Cheney & Sarah Westall -
Greenberry Cheney b Aug 1740 - apparently served in Rev war in Va & went to Ga.
This book has a little more of the family than the Arundel book & seems to be quite well
documented.

Probably purely conjecture on my part, but I believe it to be true. My research comes from "Glimpses of Wythe County (VA)"
compiled by Mary B. Kegley, pp.53-54, titled "The Chaney Family" . It talks about a discrepancy about land after Hezekiah
Chaney's death, and his will (he was a great grandson of this Richard). He named Alpha Nuckolls Chaney (his wife), and son
Archibald as co-executors of his will. The author conjectures why he was given this honor when there were other sons.
"Archibald was said to be a 'dutiful son' and lived at home with his parents, assisting his father in operating 'the
plantation'. It seems that the father felt some guilt about an accident he caused. Archibald's eye was put out by a sporan
(work with a kilt) the father was wearing. The testimony in the lawsuit showed that for those reasons Archibald was to
inherit more of the land than the other children".

I don't have a whole lot more than you do but will share what I have.
Richard Cheyne/Cheney was born 1624 in Scottland and immigrated 1636
(don't know which port). He and Charity (?) were married 1648 in Ann
Arundle, MD. He died there in 1685. They lived on a plantation called
the "South River 100" in Ann Arundle County, and all children were
christened there in All Hallow's Parish. The children from this first
marriage are:
Richard, b. 1649, married Mary (?) 1680 in A.A. Co, MD, d. 1704
Elizabeth, b. 1652, married William Iiams/Ijams
Mary, b. 1654
Ann, b. 1661, married John Jacob in 1681, A.A. Co, MD
Richard's second marriage in 1667 was to Eleanor (?). Children of this
marriage, also born in South River, also christened in All Hallow's
Parish:
1. Thomas, b. Mar 1, 1669. Mmarried (1) Sarah Westhall, Aug 19,
1697, (2) Susannah Hopper, Jun 26, 1716. He died 1738.
2. Charles, b. Jun 6, 1673. Married (1) Anne Jones (Pattison), Jul
15, 1701, (2) Agnes (?). Died 1745.
3. Sarah/Sary, b. Oct 15, 1677. Married James Chickley, Jan 29,
1645.
4. Katherine, b. Mar 12, 1679. Married James Parnell, Sep 1, 1701.
5. Charity, b. Mar 16, 1681. Married John Patten, Nov 7, 1706.
6. John, b. May 1, 1684 (twin). Married Mary Williams (Beadle), Jan
3, 1705.
7. Richard, b. May 1, 1684 ("younger" twin). This MAY be the Richard
who married Rachell Nicholson, Dec 11, 1707. Not sure.
I got the basis for this reasearch from a book called "Ann Arundel
Gentry", by H.W. Newman, pages 348-352. The copy I have is very faded
and was sent to me. I have never seen the original book, but it gives
history of all his land warrents in A.A. county. If anyone has a
readable copy, I would appreciate one for my records. Also, all
marriages are recorded in the various "Maryland Marriages" books.
