"Mary Tuning" would be Mary Frances Chewning. She married James Gryder/Grider after the 1880 US Census. James is listed as a laborer living with the Chewning on that census. On that census he is listed as James W.

You are correct that Robert Gryder was the nephew of Sarah Elizabeth Chewning Busby. His mother was Sarah Elizabeth's sister, Mary Frances, and his father was James Gryder. James W. Grider was living with the Chewnings in 1880 and was listed as a farm laborer. He was probably your James Franklin. Are you sure Robert's father's middle name was Franklin? Some of the information I've seen on family trees posted on ancestry is incorrect.
Mary Frances' parents were George Tilford Chewning and Ursula Mattingly. They were married in Sevier County, Arkansas before 1846. Ursula was supposedly where the Eastern Cherokee Indian heritage came from. Applications were filed by Sarah Elizabeth Chewning and Robert D. Busby's children for "a share of the money appropriated for the Eastern Cherokee Indians by the Act of Congress", but the claims were rejected as Ursula and family "resided in Arkansas in 1834-35 and were therefore considered 'old settlers,' if Cherokees at all."
I don't know what happened to Robert Gryder's parents other than that M. Frances died in 1888 when Robert was only 2 years old. I'm pretty sure that James remarried, but I don't have the name of the second spouse.
Hope this helps. You can contact me directly by email: derelysp(a)gmail.com

I found a marriage for James G. Gryder to Mary Tuning on 10 Mar 1881 in Ellis County, TX, at www.FamilySearch.org in the database for TX Marriages 1837-1973. Tuning was sometimes used for Chewning/Chowning. The "G" could have been a misreading of a "F" for Franklin. Also, I saw an Alice E. Bushby who married James W. Grider on 4 Sep 1887 in Red River County, TX. These may be your folks. Hope so anyway!

I am related to Chewning/Bushy through the Gryder/Grider size of the family. I have a 1900 census that states Sarah E Busby had a nephew living with her. His name is Robert Gryder. His father is James Franklin Gryder and I believe James married Mary Francis Chewning (many different spellings). Do you have any info on this because I can't find Robert, James or Mary anywhere. Robert is my gr grandfather. I have all recent info but no future info. Help if you can. thanks
Also, I have been told about the Cherokee Indian blood as well. Any info on that would be very grateful.
