Reuben Chewning son of George Chewning & Jane (Durrett-likely) married 1st Ann Dickenson dau of Robert Dickenson (Revolutionary Soldier who d 1819). Reuben also had a sister, Nancy, who married Joel Dickenson (a brother of his first wife).
In 1797 Reuben "was recommended by Thomas Jefferson to James Madison to work at Montpelier, Madison's home. (See Montpelier's web site). William J. Chewning d 2008 of Frederickburg first told me about this. He was a Captain in War of 1812. William Chewning d 2008 had a trunk labeled Capt Reuben Chewning. After Ann died he married Louisa Anderson daughter of Bartlett Anderson (from memory). He had children by both wifes. He lived in Greensprings Louisa east of Boswell's tavern. Louisa Anderson, his second wife, was a cousin of his first wife. The 1796 will of Rachel Dickinson of Louisa mentions a granddauther Louisa Anderson. Rachel had 1st married BArtlelott Anderson.
Cinder Stanton at Monticello told me a Chewning had been hired by Jefferson to be his farm manager "but didn't show" so one of Jefferson's slaves became his manager at that time. I don't think Cinder told me the exact date. I sort of think it was Reuben Chewning who perhaps went to work at Montpelier rather than Monticello being closer to his home.

I've done extensive court house research in Louisa Co. and Albemarle County only. A summary of my work on the Chewnings (in Louisa Co.) is in the Louisa Co. Historical magazine Vol 28 # 1 Spring 1997. The article mainly covers from George Chewning d 1785 & Jane (probably Durrett) I have not done research at Caroline Co. Court house. I did visit William Jeffries Chewning III, a distant cousin, who lived in downtown Fredericksburg. He was selling his house at that time (in 1990s). He died last year in Alexandria. Francis Baber Chewning 1809-1892 (his ancestor) moved to Fredericksburg from Louisa by 1840s. (Francis was a grandson of George & Jane, by Capt. Reuben Chewning of Louisa).

Thanks for your reply. Yes I have checked court records many times for different info. In fact most of what I have comes from court records. It was Caroline Co not Carolina Co. I live in Caroline but all our records have been moved to Fredericksburg & I haven't had a chance to go there for a while.

Hi Have you ever gone into any of the court records to see if there is anything to support the connection? SOmetimes you will find when they contest a Will the wife's maiden name is mentioned. Was it Carolina County where the mother and father Chewning died? And sometimes its in orphan court records.

The main clue in Louisa Co. then is the 2nd deed where Jane, Philadelphia, and Dina witnessed the deed. Maybe someone knows something about Philadelphia Chewning since that is a rare name.

I also Note that Francis Durrett & Elizabeth Chewning had a grandson Reuben Durrett and George Chewning & Jane Durrett had a son Reuben Chewning of Louisa. (This mere same 1st name I agree is a weak connection)

The Virginia Genealogist Magazine Vol 16 pg 32 by Mrs. Brent Harter...
Col. Reuben T. Durrett (founder of Filson Club) said his grandparents were Francis Durrett III & Elizabeth Chewning. In Sept 1789 the will of Jennett Chewning was proved with the same Francis Durrett III named executor. Francis Durrett also had a sister Jane Durrett who m. ---- Chewning. and a sister Rebecca Durrett
Then George Chewning dies 1785 in Louisa with both Francis Durrett and Rebecca Durrett as witnesses. Joseph Chewning witnesses the one and only deed of George in Louisa Co. who apparently lived in Hanover co.
The Edward Pleasants Valentine Papers Vol II pg 1149. Jane Chewning the mother of Jane Chewning (who m. Thomas E. Pleasants with Reuben Chewning witness) gave written permission in 1801. Reuben being named in George's will as a son of George. George's will names his wife as Jean but this document says Jane. It also proves that Jane (who I think is Jane Durrett Chewning was still living in 1801 so there is a will of a Jean chewning proved previous to 1801 in Louisa Co. and she was not the wife of George who died in 1785 as some have surmissed.
"Sir, You will please grant to Mr. Thomas E. Pleasants a License to marry my daughter Jane Chewning....signed Jane Chewning. Test. Reuben Chewning May 2, 1801.
