I believe that our chewning line being George Chewning who left will in Louisa Co. proven 1785 was a another son of William & Jennett Jacobus. His wife was Jane in some docs and Jean in his will. Francis Durrett and Rebecca Durrett were witnesses to George's will in Louisa Co. So I believe his wife was Jane Durrett and his sister was the Elizabeth Chewning who married in 1775 Francis Durrett III. George's will in Louisa Co. does mention he has a right to 100 acres in Caroline Co. "after my mother's death"
In Sept 1789 the will of Jennett Chewning was proven and Francis Durrett was appointed executor. So I believe his wife Elizabeth was a daughter of Jennett. George was a son of Jennett and George married Jane Durrett the sister of Francis Durrett III.
I believe this George's first deed in Louisa (Louisa Deed Book E pg 359 in 1781 calls him "George Chewning of Hanover Co." (he buys 201 acres next to Michie & Watson (near Boswell's tavern) Joseph Chewning was a witness of the deed. The first census of US I believe shows George Chewning of Hanover as the farm manager of General Nelson (by my poor memory and I haven't looked at that in years)
I believe the Joseph, witness of the above deed, was a brother of George. He left will in Louisa Co. in 1815.

In Louisa Co. Va. There are two deeds of "a" Theophelus chewning:
Louisa Deed Bk M pg 55 dated 13 April 1812: Theophelus Chewning "of Louisa" and James Michie of 2nd part and Branham and Bibb of Columbia Va. 3rd part. Chewning owes Branham and Bibb $45 and puts a horse, feather bed, and furniture in trust to pay off the debt.
Lousia Deed book K pg 45 1 Feb 1805 Peter Crawford, trusteee for Theophilus Chewning and Hannah puts in trust horse, cows, feather bed, and furniture to secure to Ludlow Branham and Co. Signature of Theophilus Chewning and Hannah Chewning. Witnesses are Dina Chewning, Philadelphia Chewning, and Jane Chewning.
Now would this Theophilus be the one born in 1784 married by 19 years old to Hannah ---- or perhaps Theophilus and Hannah are the parents of Theophilus b. 1784.

Sorry, I don't know her last name either. I've also seen the marr of Angell Jacobus & Elizabeth Clarke. I have not made a connection to her line of Clarke's yet but since my husband's Clarke's started out in that area I believe there as got to be a connection.

Do you know Jennett's maiden name? I looked in the Christ Church register and didn't find a marriage of Jacobus. But there were Jacobus in Old Rappahannock because mention was made in a deed 1688 of Angell Jacobus being married to Elizabeth Clarke daughter of Henry and Joan

HI. I have a William b. about 1694 married Jannett Jacobus 29 Dec 1721,per The Parish Register of Christ Church, pg 164(which was not indexed.) There is listed a Joseph and Jennett Jacobus as having a daughter Anne 15 Jan 1720. And a death of Joseph Jacobus May 15 1721. Which means Jannnett Jacobus could be a widow! They had children: Samuel, Jennett, William, Joseph, Bartholomew and Judith. This is from a chart of a Chowning cousin. I believe Wm's wife's name has been spelled different ways. William's parents were Robert and Ann Chowning of Lancaster Co., VA.

Sorry, that Census didn't have father and mother's birth place. I did find John J under Tuning(or was that Tunning). That's what happens with older folk who have lost their teeth. His wife is listed as Jane and not Mary Jane. BUT they are in Chambers Co., AL. There are two other Chewning young men listed there on other pages.
Thanks for let me know about these Chowning descendants. We are talking about them being from the Middlesex Co., VA Chowning family aren't we?

Hi. The Daughter's of the American Revolutin (DAR) have an application for Samuel Chewning b. 1752 d. 1808through his son John. Perhaps the women who submitted this application would have given more information regarding Samuel. Also, John died 1877 and he would have been on an 1870 Census which he would have given the birth state of his father and mother. Samuel b. 1723 died in Caroline Co., VA. Are you in the DAR?

Hello,
IN checking the Daughter's of the American Revolution(DAR) records Sarah's father Samuel is a Rev. War soldier. Applications for the DAR must have documented proof. Perhaps the women who have submitted early applicatons included a family bible with children's names. Have you checked that source?

re: Samuel Chewning/Nancy Garrett, Middlesex Co., Va.
Of great interest to me, is the on going search of Samuel Chewning of Virginia. The additional listing of a Samuel Chewning, Jr., who married Mary Jackson in S.C., seems to be causing a great deal of confusion.
The Samuel Chewning of South Carolina, Cheraw District, Chesterfield Co., later moved into Georgia and lived in Baldwin Co., having lands in Green Co. and Wilkerson Co.
In 1804, John J. Chewning was born, about 4 years before his father died.
I am trying to make a distinction between Samuel Chewning of Middlesex, Va. and Caroline Co. Va. and the Samuel Chewning, Jr., that apparently went to S.C.
Is it possible that Samuel Chewning married to Nancy Garrett is the same Chewning that later went to S.C. and married Mary Jackson.
There has been no definitive Samuel Chewning, Jr.
