The book is in SLC at the FHC. I imagine you could get a interlibrary loan from Allen Co Indiana Library or SLC.
I am also related to Theopolus. I have my chownings back to Wrotham, Kent, England.
How are you related to him??? He is my 5th cousin, 4 times removed.

MY HAPLOGROUP IS E3b. I HAD 12 MARKERS TESTED AND YES I SUBMITTED TO Y-DNASearch.com. IF SOMEONE WITH A CHEWNING SOUNDEX NAME MATCHES MY 12 MARKERS, THEN I WILL HAVE A 37 MARKER TEST DONE FOR COMPARISON.
THEOPHILUS IS SAID TO HAVE LIVED IN LOUISA AND CAROLINE COUNTIES IN VIRGINIA ABOUT 1800 AND THEN MOVED TO SOUTH CAROLINA AFTER 1812.

I'm so happy to hear that you've had your DNA tested. What haplogroup is your Y-DNA? How many markers did you have tested, and are there any matches? Have you submitted your results to Y-DNASearch.com?
Do you have any idea in what county Theophilus was born or resided?
Chowning, Chewning, Chouning, Tewning, & Tuning are all one in the same. And, yes, Chowning's Tavern in Williamsburg started pronouncing the name "Chewning." You can imagine, with the old VA pronunciation of Chewning that it would sound like Chowning, as they often pronounced "house" as hos with a long "O."
There is a Tuning Road in Williamsburg, too, which is where I live. I've also seen Tuning on a Civil War map created by Northern soldiers.
I have printed your message, will add it to my database, and if I run across anything on any Theophilus, I will let you know.

MY KNOWLEDGE OF THE VIRGINIA CHEWNING / CHOWNING FAMILY IS VERY LIMITED. THE INFORMATION I HAVE INDICATES THAT I AM DESCENDED FROM A THEOPHILUS CHEWNING BORN ABOUT 1784 IN VIRGINIA WHO LATER MOVED TO SOUTH CAROLINA. IT APPEARS THAT HE HAD A WIFE IN VIRGINIA NAMED HANNAH BUT NO RECORD HAS BEEN LOCATED TO DATE OF ANY CHILDREN BY THAT MARRIAGE. HIS SECOND MARRIAGE WAS TO ANN ELMORE ABOUT 1811 AND THEIR FIRST CHILD WAS NAMED WILLIAM, BORN ABOUT 1812.
NOW WE MOVE TO PURE SPECULATION - IF MY THEOPHILUS CHEWNING HAD A SON BY HIS FIRST WIFE IT WOULD BE REASONABLE TO CONCLUDE THAT SON COULD BE NAMED THEOPHILUS ALSO. THE DATES OF THE MARRIAGE (1824) OF THE KENTUCKY THEOPHILUS CHOWNING MAKES THIS A POSSIBILITY.
AS YOU PROBABLY KNOW, IT HAS BEEN STATED THAT THE CHEWNING / CHOWNING / CHOUNING NAME CAN APPLY TO THE SAME FAMILY. AS SOME SUPPORT OF THAT POSSIBILITY, I RECALL HAVING A MEAL SOME 35 YEARS AGO AT CHOWNING'S TAVERN IN OLD WILLIAMSBURG, VIRGINIA AND WHE I ASKED THE WAITRESS HOW SHE PRONOUNICED THE NAME OF THE TAVERN SHE STATED IT WAS PRONOUNCED CHEWNING.
IN AN ATTEMPT TO CLARIFY SOME OF THESE ISSUES I HAVE MY DNA RECORDS FROM THE NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC GENOGRAPHIC PROJECT AVAILABLE FOR SHARING TO COMPARE WITH ANY MALE DESCENDANT OF THE POSSIBLE FAMILY LINES. IT WOULD BE NICE TO PUT THAT ISSUE TO REST.
THANKS - WADE CHEWNING wade(a)jchewning.com

Hello, Wade, I am a descendant of one of the earlier Chownings and wanted
to tell you that there is a book titled Descendants of Theophilus Chowning,
author William R. Chowning, published 1986 by Gateway Press. When I bought
it, Mr. William Chowning lived at 955 Minerva Ave, Louisville, KY 40223.
That was in 1997 so he may not be there now but possibly the publisher
still could get copies. I think he thoroughly documents the succeeding
generations--except for mine!! Anyway, my name came to be spelled Tuning,
I suppose because of the Chewning pronounciation. Jo Anne Tuning Magee

I have never seen the book, but I have in my database a Theophilus Chowning who married Polly Sherman on 9 Sep 1824 in Bourbon County, Kentucky.
Is this Theophilus connected to the Theophilus Chewning you mentioned?
