Dear Jay:
Our genealogies have crossed paths more than once, I do recall corresponding with you around 1985, and maybe earlier, when we were living in Texas.
I hope we can communicate with each other again. John J. Chewning,of Chambers County, Alabama is in my direct family line. I have never been able to clearly understand about John J. Chewnings' father, Samuel.
This is what we have learned. Samuel Chewning was from Virginia. We have land grant documents of Samuel Chewning in South Carolina, dates 1789 and 1790. He appears on a federal census in 1790, along with George Chewning, listed separately. Samuel's lands were along the Little Pedee River. He also had lands in Georgia. Counties of Green, Putnam, Baldwin. His will is dated 1808. John J. Chewning was born in 1804.
Would love to hear from you.
Warm regards,
Lynn Chewning Metzger

I am looking for information in regard to my fourth great-grandparents William Fulcher & Lorena Winaford LANE Chewning.
Grandfather William Fulcher Chewning was born in Virginia, possibly 28 April 1805, & died in DeKalb County, Georgia. He married Grandmother Lorena Winaford LANE in 1831 per Grandfather Jesse Lane Jr.'s family bible record, she was born 03 December 1812 & died in DeKalb County, Georgia. Both may be buried in Decatur City Cemetery where other family members are buried.
Their children were:
Virginia Ann Chewning born about 1833 in DeKalb County & married J. E. (Jeptha?) George 05 March 1850 DeKalb County. I believe both Aunt Virginia & Uncle J. E. may have been dead by 1880 for their youngest children, Bertha & Ernest, were living their big brother William in 1880 & Cousin Florence was living with my third great-grandparents Captain Hardy Isaiah & Laura Sohpia CHEWNING Randall.
Laura Sophia Chewning born 14 December 1837 DeKalb County died 07 July 1923 Atlanta, Fulton County, married Captain Hardy Isaiah Randall, born 29 March 1838 Georgia died
17 August 1912 Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia. Both buried in the Pace-Randall Cemetery Vinings, Cobb County, Georgia. Third great-grandparents.
James G. Chewning born about 1842 DeKalb County, Georgia married Emily SHANKS.
John Albert Chewning born DeKalb County, Georgia married
Margaret HUDGINS 08 September 1874.
Any information on this family will be greatly appreciated & I will gladly share my Lane information & Bull-Randall information.
Thank You,
Lena
