Hi Colonel,
I will print this out and study it, however. My line never left
Middlesex Co., VA until 1881. They moved to Baltimore, MD. So many
records were lost in SC and they are trying to reconstruct. My George
CHOWNING b. 1688 in Middlesex Co., VA had several brothers one was Thomas
who married Sarah Davies(or David) their children's names were John b.
1707 m. Rachel Tugwell, Robert b. 1710 m. Betty Guttery,, Absolom b. 1714
d. 1714, Sarah b. 1715 d. 1716, Sarah b. 1717, Jane b. 1719, Mary b. ?.
I've never done research on this CHOWNING family but maybe someone else
whould know if a George died 1803 in Anson County NC is possible from
this line? Bartholomew b. 1731 could be from THOMAS's other brother
William b. 1694 who married Jeannet Jacobs(spelled?) William b. 1694 did
move out of Middlesex Co., VA.
Best regards cousin,
Mary

Hi Colonel James,
Thank you for your reply. I too have been researching for several
years. I, however, have found my connection and wish to help others.
My dad visited his great grand dad's home land. My dad's Uncle
moved back there and was included in the deed records. I found a book
"MIDDLESEX COUNTY, VA HOMES" that listed my Great Uncle's name and my
great great grand father's name. The book had the help of Carroll C.
CHOWNING, who they said had a good of the information resources in his
genealogy work. From there my search lead me to CARROLL C. CHOWNING's
paper at the VIRGINIA HISTORICAL SOCIETY's Library in Richmond, VA.
Carroll C. CHOWNING is one of my great grand father's brothers. In
fact my great grand father was the first male and great Uncle Carroll was
the last born son. SO here I am looking for the other children's
descendants, who like me great grand dad moved away from Churchview, VA,
Middlesex Co., VA.
James Henry's(three different wives) children's names per CARROLL C.
CHOWNING's papers:
Sarah Virginia b.. 18 Oct 1839
Wm Bailey b. 1 Aug 1841 d. 20 Apr 1907 Burried in the Hermitage
Baptist Church Cemetery
John b. 27 Nov 1843
Mary Elizabeth b. 26 Aug 1846
James Michael b. 1 May 1849
Catherine Todd b. 31 Aug 1856
George Smith b.27 Dec 1859
Harriet Lee b. 20 Jul 1861
Robert G. b. 25 May 1865
Thomas Jackson b.14 Aug 1867
Henry Shepherd b.4 Sep 1869
Louise Murray b. 5 Sep 1872
Minnie Garland b. 4 Oct 1874
Arthur Garland b. 10 Jul 1877
Carroll Clifford b. 3 Feb 1884
I have given birth dates because that may help someone connect to one
of these names. Let me know if
Most sincerely,
Mary

Mary,
Do you know whose son James Henry Chowning/Chewning is? The name is
still
to this day spelled both ways. My family spell it Chewning. I am from Wm
Chewning, and Jeanette C. Jacobut b bef 1708 and then their son, Samuel
Chewning b Jan 21, 1722/23
He married Nancy Garrett and then through their daughter, Lucy Chewning b
abt 1768 who md John R. Smith. This early family were in England with the
old Robert Chowning and Jeane Hitchcock then to Middlesex, then later
Caroline Co., VA
If you know who your ancestor came from let me known and I will see if I
can
help.
Marsha

Hi listers,
This is my first posting for this listing. I'm looking for other
descendants of James Henry CHOWNING who was born 1815 in Gloucester Co.,
VA to Bailey and Sarah Garland CHOWNING. This family grouping was part
of the Middlesex Co., VA CHOWNINGs.
James Henry CHOWNING was married three times and had thirteen
children, some of whom moved away from Middlesex Co. and spelled their
name, CHEWNING. My grand mother pronounced it CHEWNING but always told
us it was spelled CHOWNING.
Best wishes,
Mary Beth

Hello Thelma,
We live on the Mississippi Gulf Coast & my brother received a letter today from a Marion Dallas Chewning who is 82 & was on the coast recently & saw his name. He gave him his address & asked him to let him know if they could be related. He said there were only 3 children living out of 12. All of them were in their 80's. He was from Mabank Texas. Could this be your father?
I am looking up our family tree & have found that my family are in Early County Georgia, Tallahassee Fl.
My father was in the military & we were in Texas. He was stationed at Sheppard AFB & a lady told him when we were there that he was related to some Chewnings in Texas, but I haven't found anything yet.
I just thought I would let you know about the letter.
I hope to hear from you soon. Donna
Looking for Edward Preston Chewning married to Elizabeth (Fannie) Snodgrass in Roane County West Virginia in 1892. I would like to confirm children and burials.
Thank you
Looking for information about Robert M Chewning. He was married to Rosanna Looney in Roane County West Virginia 1887. I would like to confirm children and burials.
Thank you.
