This is a bio from "Perry County A History" by Delahunt. Most of his information is correct, but, I have found from previous bio's that I took from him - he does make mistakes. I have tried to verify all I can, but, it is difficult.
This is rather long - so I will have to send it in parts.
CHEWNING. Harden Chewning - 1758 Campbell Private in Captain Samuel Haws Co. 2nd Virginia Regiment Continental Line from May through October 1772. In November 1777 Captain James Upshaw, commander of Haws Co. and Private Chewning continued on the payroll until January 1778.

Taken from the "Rockport Journal" March 13, 1896
William T. Chewninig died at his home near Huffman, this county on Monday last, aged about 74 years. He was born in this county, and spent his life near the place of his birth, excepting four years during which he was in the service of his country.
He enlisted in Company "K" 81st Ind. Vol. Inf. in 1862, and served until the close of the war, participating in among others the battles of Stone River, Chicamuga, Lookout Mountain, Missionary Ridge and the siege of Atlanta, and returning with Thomas's command took part in the battles of Franklin and Nashville, Tenn. He was of a lively and jovial nature and was a great favorite with his comrades, entertaining them with patriotic songs, around the campfires at night many times after the weary march. It is said that his comrades would often "draw strings" to ascertain who would stand duty for him that he might stay to sing and entertain the boys.
He leaves a wife and five children, with many other relatives and friends, to mourn his departure. He was an uncle of the editor of the Journal, appropirate these lines from Scott: Soldier rest! Thy warfare o'er, sleep the sleep that knows not, breaking. Dream of battled fields no more, days of danger nights of waking. In our isle's enchanted hall, hands unseen thy couch are strewing, fairy strains of music fall, every sense in slumber dewing. Soldier rest! Thy warfare o'er; dream of fighting fields no more; sleet the sleep that knows not breaking, mourn of toil, nor night of waking.

Taken from "Dale Weekly Reporter" Feb 18, 1898 - " We have in our town among other defenders of the Union, a grandson of one of the defenders of our country in its first struggle for independence. Mr. Hardin Chewning's grandfather, Hardin Chewning, enlisted in the 2nd Virginia Regiment in June 1777, served in Captain Hawes' company. The regiment was commanded by Col. Alezander Spottswood and also at another time by Col. Febiger in the early struggle for liberty. The honorable record was sent Mr. Chewning, our townsman, by the Secretary of War this week and is one of which he may justly feel proud, being the descendant of such a grandfather. It is certainly a fighting family. The grandparents serving through the Revolutionary War and our Hardin through the War of the Rebellion as a soldier for the Union"
Taken from the scrapbooks of Mrs. Bess V. Ehrmann - In 1915 a decision was made to form a Spencer County Historical Society. Members included John O. Chewning
