1860 census, Thomas E. Chew was living in Dunkirk, Calvert County, MD, a 21 year old Planter-Farmer (dwelling 908), and on the same page #118 (dwelling 912)is Philemon Chew (25), his wife Mary (23), dau. Mary (5), Female Baby Chew (3mos.), Robert Chew (19)-perhaps Philemon is a brother or cousin and that is as far back as I can trace in this family line.
In 1870 census Thomas E. Chew (32), now a store keeper, and his wife Mary E Chew/ nee Griffith (20) were living in the Eighth Election District of Anne Arundel County, South River. Living next-door in an Eliza A. Smith (40), a John L. Griffith (16) and Smith children ranging from 9-14 years old. Living on the other side of this family is storekeeper Farmer, Franklin Griffith (41), wife Mary E. (39), son (15), Frank T. (12), Robert S. (9), Sallie (7), and farm hand, store clerk and domestic servant. This might be Mary E. Chew, nee Griffith's, family. I really do not know for sure!
Mary E. and Thomas E. Chew's children: Mary L. Chew (1869), Annie E. Chew (1870), Gertrude Eliza Chew (1871), John E. Chew (1873).
In the 1880 census, AA County, South River Post Office, Thomas E. Chew has become a widower and Annie Chew is no longer listed in the family group.
The story goes that they lived somewhere around Friendship, MD in Southern Anne Arundel and this is near Dunkirk, Calvert County. (Herring Bay was part of South River Hundred; all of this stuff is in the same area). Anyway, Thomas E. Chew never remarried, after Polly (Mary) Griffith, the love of his life, died and he raised their family by himself.
Any info appreciated, as this is basically the only info I have on this side of my family. Thanks.
