Hello
I am new to the list... seeking information on the slaves in the CARROLL
family that connect to the CHEWS. Harriet Chew who married Charles
Carrol Jr., and Anna Maria Chew who married Lord William Johnston in
Maryland.
Charles Carroll of Carrollton's son Charles married Harriet Chew -- a
listing of his estate can be found here... but it is not complete. I
believe Harriet is the daughter of Benjamin Chew.
http://www.gunstonhall.org/probate/wdmdelsl.htm
I am also interested to know if Harriet or how Harriet may be related to
Anna "Nan" Maria Chew who married Lord William Johnstone. Anna Chew is
the daughter of Larkin Chew..and I wonder how Larkin and Benjamin Chew
are related.
For those of you who are interested there is a new book on the market
called: Princes of Ireland, A Carroll Saga, 1500-1782; Here's a review
of the book by the William and Mary Quarterly.
reviewed at http://www.wm.edu/oieahc/WMQ/Jan01/Hoffman&Mason.pdf
Additionally, you might be even more interested in the forthcoming
3-volume set it references: Dear Papa, Dear Charley: The Peregrinations
of a Revolutionary Aristocrat as Told by Charles Carroll of Carrollton
and His Father, Charles Carroll of Annapolis, with Sundry Observations
on Bastardy, Child-Rearing, Romance, Matrimony, Commerce, Tobacco,
Slavery and the Politics of Revolutionary America. It's not out yet,
but you can pre-order it via University of S.C. at Chapel Hill and
Amazon Books etc.
There is also an older book printed in about 1942 by Ellen Hart Smith
called Charles Carroll of Carrollton. Haven't been able to find a copy
locally.
I have followed the Anna Maria Chew and William Johnston relationship
all the way to Bunceton, MO where my ancestors were slaves on a place
called Ravenswood. My ancestors were owned by William H. Johnston m.
Margaret Hutchinson. Margaret's parents were William Hutchinson and
Margaret Hickman Hutchinson.. and all their children were born in Paris,
KY and numerous members of the family moved to Pittsburg, PA. [When
William died, she received interest in his slaves via revisionary
interest and her brother James purchased the slaves and sold to her new
husband Nathaniel Leonard.. who is the founder of the Ravenswood
Plantation.] William H. Johnston's father was Capt. William H. Johnston
who married Rachel Spears. [Her parents were Elizabeth Ewalt and Jacob
Spears]; the Capt.'s father was Robert Johnstone who married Margaret
"Peggay" McClanahan...but it looks like her also married Ann Cook and an
"Overton." Peggay's sister Clara married David Hickman -- Margaret
Hickman Hutchinson's father. [See how the ties stay close]. Robert
Johnstone's father is Lord William Johnston who married Anna Maria Chew.
It appears from some web research that Lord William was also married 2
or three times.
I have will and probate records on young William H. Johnston who married
Margaret Hutchinson.. they came to Boone Co., MO -- and there are also
records for William's siblings and his mother Elizabeth. I believe Jacob
Spears may have records in KY.
As far as the Carrolls are concerned, I got pissed off at my councilman
who campaigned on his "famous ancestors" who signed the Declaration of
Independence [Charles Carroll] and Daniel Carroll. As I did a little
research I discovered that they were not only the richest family of
their time, but owned the most slaves; and the marriage of Charles
Carroll son to Harriet Chew... caught my eye... knowing that I had a
CHEW in my research. I'm also reading the new book by David McCullough
called "John Adams" and both Benjamin Chew and Charles Carroll of
Carrollton get mentioned. There's another interesting book out called
Founding Brothers which also adds some perspective to the dealing of
America's founding politicians.
See online.

P.S. I also have Chilton, Tutt and Chism ties - that I believe pick up
through some of these early Colonial families.

If you would like any additional information I will give you what I have.

Regarding Karen Henry's posting of the Israel Chew bible some time ago, I was happy to get the readout of Israel Chews' bible records. Does anyone know how I may contact Mrs. John Chalmers of Hammonton who apparently has the bible in her possession?
I presently have the William W. Chew bible in my posession. I believe William Woorster Chew was the son of Israel and Hannah Wooster Chew. He married Elizabeth C. Andrews on May 22, 1847. I have to shortly return the bible to it's owner, however, I have scanned the pages that recorded marriages, births, and deaths into jpeg files and am happy to share them if you are interested.
I also have access to Israel Chew's and his son William W. Chew's account books, dating from the 1830's through the 1870's, which were just recently found in an old house in Bass River Township. The home belonged to Isaac Lewis Berry who married Martha Chew who was a daughter to William W. Chew, Israel's son. Tax bills found with the account books indicate that Isaac and William lived in Waterford Township, NJ.
I am somewhat confused ragarding the Israel Chew bible's reference to his son William Henry Chew as opposed to William W. Chew (The W is for Wooster, his mother's maiden name.) The William W. Chew bible lists William Henry Chew as a son of William W. and Elizabeth Andrews Chew. I know that William W. Chew is the son of Israel Chews as the William Chew bible lists the date of Israel Chew's (Son of Contine and Martha Chew) birth as 2/12/1792 and Hannah Chew's birth date as 9/12/1799 followed by William Wooster listing as their son. Do you suppose that someone reading the Israel Chew Bible mistook William's middle initial as an "H' instead of a "W" and assumed that the "H" stood for Henry?
I hope I haven't confused you too much.

Dear Laura,
Thank you for your help. I don't see "my" Chews on this list, but here is more info that may be of interest to you.
Thomas Chew (born, Blackburn around 1851) married Jane Gardiner Chew (from Halifax, York?). In 1881 census they lived at 41 St. Paul Street in Blackburn. Later they had thesde children: Bertha Chew (my grandmother who married John Parker in 1908), Sarah Jane, Alice, Elizabeth, Obadiah, Ann, and Harry. Many thanks, Stephen Morrissey in Montreal, Canada.

My copy of the Israel Chew Bible was gotten off of microfilm #1005025" from LDS Family Center. Mrs. John Chalmers is recorded in "Hammonton, New Jersey" but I don't have a date for when this bible was copied. Mrs. Chalmers could be deceaced now.
It definitely states "Isreal Chew, born Feb. 12, 1792", "Hannah Chew daughter of Wm. Worster, born Sept. 12, 1799" and "William Henry Chew born Oct. 9, 1824"
Could it be that you might be mistaking the handwriting of the "H" for a "W" or is it actually recorded as "William Woorster Chew?"
Also records Contine Chew marriage and children.
Also have copy of Elisha D. Chew family bible.

Can anyone help me? My grandfather was married before he married my grandmother. My grandfathers name was Glenn Walter Chew and he was married to Carolyn O. Mcklveen in 1937. They had two boys named Glenn Robert Chew born About 1938 and Melvin Chew born about 1940. When they where divorced she re-married and changed the boys last name. I don't know who she re-married and don't know the new last name. It all took place back in Pa. somewhere. So I have two uncles I would love to meet. If anyone has any info. please email me at lchew(a)chcc.org. Thank you
