Travis,
Thanks for the contact regarding Elijah W. Chew. I will be glad to share
what I have found thus far to get you started. You will note the names
Elisha and Elijah used interchangably for the same man. I descend through
his daughter, Frances Anna Chew.

Died suddenly, of congestion, at the home of his son-in-law, R.B. Hedden, in
this city, July 13, 1890, Elijah W. Chew, aged 78 years, 3 months, and 21
days. Father Chew was born March 22, 1812, at Carpenters Landing, New
Jersey, was married May 10, 1835, to Miss Jane Pyle, who died October 11,
1841. By this union were four children, two of whom are still living. He
was again married in 1846 to Miss Sarah Miler, who died July 5, 1890. Nine
children were born to them, four of whom survive them. He was one of the
early settlers of Oskaloosa, coming here in 1846, and making this his home
almost all the time since. Father Chew was converted and joined the M.E.
Church when a young man, and during his long life, lived a faithful and
consistent Christian. The funeral was attended by a large circle of
relatives and friends. It was conducted by Rev. H.S. Hilton, of the First
M.E. Church, and then the long procession wended its way to Forest Cemetery,
where the remains were laid to rest by the side of his wife, who had
preceded him but a few days before, to the beautiful land beyond the
river. In life they were united, and in death they were not divided.
