Hi Chew Family Researchers,
I descend from the family of Rev. Elisha D. Chew through his son Elijah W.
Chew. The family left Gloucester County, NJ for Mahaska County, Iowa around
1845.
Elijah apparently was first married to Jane A. Pyles but by 1850 had married
for a second time to Sarah Miler who was born in Indiana around 1820.
Children of Elijah and Jane were daughter Amanda and son Francis who were
born in NJ. Children of Elijah and Sarah were Matilda, Frances Ann,
Florence, and Ella Maria who were all born in Iowa.
I also want to mention that it is evident from the various records--census,
death, cemetery, obituaries--that Elijah W. was commonly called Elisha.
This is important as the death certificates of his children will likely list
the father as Elisha Chew since that is what he was known by. Many hours of
work have gone into sorting this out and I hope this will simplify things
for future researchers.
I would love to hear from others who are researching this family line.
Also, I am hoping that someone on this list lives in Glouchester County, NJ
or will be visiting soon and can help me by locating a cemetery record for
Jane Chew and some biographical info for Rev. Elisha D. Chew and his
children.
Lisa in Illinois
