Hello Group,
All your discussion of John Chew has roused my interest in
my long neglected Chew line. Does this connect in with any
ones tree?

p. 540 Esmen Township
The first permanent settlement made in this township was
by John Chew, from Ohio, in the year 1835. He settled near
Mud Creek... There were yet no stores in Pontiac... The
early settler, however, cared but little for market or
shops. His gun and his hoe supplied him with all the real
necessaries of life, including clothing; and as for
luxuries, he had left them behind when he set his face
toward the far West.
Chew lived, like all pioneers, both a hard and an easy
life-- hard as taking into account the many comforts and
advantages which abounded in the country from which he had
come, and easy as regards the amount of actual labor
performed to eke out a living. He remained in the township
until about 1860, the date of his death.

Me! Count me in on any reunion - I always love to meet and greet new
cousins! Except he wasn't really there, at least permanently, til 1620ish.
Do we know for a fact that he came over earlier than that?

I,too, am descended from John Chew and would also like to prove the
relationship. I am descended from John and Sarah through Col. Thomas Chew
and Martha Taylor. Their daughter Frances married Capt. Henry Downs, Jr.
Their daughter Mildred married James Brewster and so on down to my
ggrandmother Isabella Jane McGregor.
The family is traced in the Historical Southern Families by John Bennett
Boddie.
It would be really nice to find the connection to the Jamestown Chews.

Sounds like a great idea. . . I trace back to John through Samuel (the first
Chew born in America?).

That sounds great. And we would really only need to add our
lines........What I mean, is many of the lines are verified already with
birth, death & marriage cert. as many Chew families are part of DAR,
Jamestown society, etc. As far as my line is concerned, I only need to go
one generation!!! We could then set up a web page (I can do that) with the
copyrighted gedcom (does that sound right - maybe we need to figure a way
for it not to be stolen by a for profit company) and links to other Chew
family members.
Most of us are family, I believe. I think this might be fun. As far as the
Jamestown Celebration, for those of you with school age children, I think it
would be a great way for them to learn about Jamestown. All too often I
feel the history is based on the Pilgrims, but lets face it, we were here
first!!!<g>

Seeing this thread about exchanging data is great. I love getting new
information. It's not that I'm lazy and don't want to type it in... but
there are some better ways of exchanging information.
Do any of you use computer programs to compile information?
Do you know what GEDCOM files are?
Not know what this is? read about it:
http://www.rootscomputing.com/howto/gedcom/gedcom.htm
You might think it's over your head. But if you take a bit of time to
understand what it is and if your software has this capablity imagine: We
could potentially, with the exchange of 1 "file" link our ancestors together
and have all of that information by merely sending a file. I've put about a
considerable number of manhours into putting the information in a database
(Broderbund's Family Tree Maker) and have about 600 or so in there. Mostly
my line.

Will give a brief outline. More if you need it.
Benjamin Johnston, son of William and Ann Chew Johnston, born
1734/1737, married Dorothy Jones, daughter of Gabriel Jones, b. 1715,
d. 1767, and wife Mary Johnson. Mary was daughter of William Johnson
of Essex Co., VA. and the widow of John Edmundson. (This created a lot
of confusion in researching.) Gabriel and Mary Jones had son Gabriel
who was a hero in the Rev War and married to Martha Waller. Daughter
Jane Jones, married a Gray. (I don't know the exact names of the Gray
children, but have a good idea from old bible records.) Lucy Jones,
the third sister, married Thomas Poindexter and I have all their
children.
Richard Jones is supposed to be the father of Gabriel Jones, the
elder.
Larkin Johnston, son of William and Ann Chew Johnston, married Mary
Rogers, sister of Ann Rogers who married John Clark. John and Ann
Clark were parents of George Rogers Clark and William Clark of the
Lewis and Clark Expedition. Larkin was known as "Uncle" to all the
Clark children: this has come down by word of mouth through the
family.
I hope this helps in some way. It has not been easy gathering
information on all these collateral families, but I'm still working on
it. Virginia

I am a descendant of John of Jamestown, according to Robert Chew's book. I
descend from Hannah, daughter of Thomas Chew and Mary Wood (Richard1,John2,
John1).
I was wondering how many follow the conclusion of Robert as to the ancestry of
John of Long Island leading to John of Jamestown. I would love to profess this
as fact.
I grew up in Gloucester Township, NJ, a few blocks from Chews Landing!

Debi, I, too am a descendant of John and am a Colonial Dame of the
17th Century through his line.
John, Joseph, Larkin, Ann Chew Johnston, Benjamin Johnston, General
Washington Johnston, Ann Chew Johnston Daniel, William Prince Daniel,
William Horace Daniel's daughter, Eliza Mabel Daniel Lilleston.
It would be wonderful to find others who are descendants of any of
these generations. I have tried (perhaps not hard enough) to learn of
others from the William Johnston and Ann Chew Johnston family of
Caroline county, Virginia. It was a large family which married into
some well know illustrious early VA families: Rogers; Farish; Jones;
Ware; Flint; Coleman; Waller and Benger.
Perhaps this will evoke a response. ?

There is ONE reference in the DAR to Elizabeth Chew and Jonas but I believe it
is in error. It list Jonas' father as William Menefee and Mother as Martha
Gaines. William was Jonas' brother, there is only 2 years difference in birth
records between Jonas and the william menefee that married Martha Gaines.

What generation are you missing?
While I have yet to make a DOCUMENTED connection between Elizabeth Chew and
Jonas Menefee, I have extensive documentation on the Chew line back to Chew
Magna. The the line is docuemented to 1500 and is conjecture from 1050 to
1500. All three books I have used show documented proof of John Chew came to
Virginia on the Charitie in 1622 with sarah and 3 servants were living at Hog
Island on the south side of the James River.
If you ever come across any documentation either proving or disproving the
marriage of Elizabeth Chew and Jonas Menefee, please let me know. I would
forever be grateful. Many state there is a Chew and Menefee connection but NO
one have provide documentation.
thank you for the reply

I am Buddy Hanna. I am Researching my family. I am looking for information
on Elizabeth Chew, d/o Thomas Chew and Martha Taylor. The line I am trying to
connect her to is the Menefee line, Jonas Menefee. Many in the Menefee line
state that Jonas' wife was Elizabeth Chew. His will states wife, Elizabeth
but to date I have never found her last name on any documents. The Chews and
Menefees did live next to each other in the late 1600s and early 1700s. I
have found adjacent land records between John Chew and George Menifie, Thomas
chew and William Menefee but no reference to Elizabeth marrying. A couple of
books (one by Robert Chew) states she never married but a letter by Joseph
Chew (son of Thomas Chew) written in 1797 to his son Joseph mentions Elizabeth
(Besty) as living very infirmed.
Just wondering if you had any information on Elizabeth Chew d/o of Thomas chew
and Martha Taylor.
any help would be greatly appreciated

Greetings from Canada.
I just wondered if anyone has done any research in Lancs in the Chew
family. An ancestor of mine was born in 1807 in Manchester.
His name was Samuel Chew.
Thanks.
