John Chew of Jamestown, VA (1587-1668) was born in Whalley Parish,
Lancashire, England. A merchant, he may have been with John Smith as early
as 1607, when the first permanent English settlement in the new World was
founded at Jamestown. It was certain that John Chew received land granted
from the Virginia Company in 1618. He married Sarah Gale in England, and
returned to Virginia in 1622 on the ship Charity, which was owned by his
wife's family. He operated a tobacco plantation on Hogg Island, across the
James River from Jamestown. His wife, indentured servants and oldest chilren
immigrated from Chewton, Somersetshire, England on the ship Seaflower to
join him in 1623. John built a house, warehouse and store in Jamestown,
where he dealt in wine, corn and tobacco. He was a member and secretary of
the Virginia House of Burgesses. By 1642, he also owned 1200 acres in York
County. When the Virginia Governor oppressed Puritans in support of the
Church of England, the family migrated to Anne Arundel County, Maryland.
John used Virginia tobacco to buy 500 acres near
Annapolis. When his wife died in Maryland, John returned to Virginia. He was
the oldest son of John Chewe of Bewdley, Worcestershire, England.
The preceeding is abstracted from the book by Robert L. Chew, "Genealogy of
the Chew Family," published by the Gloucester County, N. J., Historical
Society, Woodbury, N. J., 1982.
John Chew married Sarah Gale. John was born 1587 and died 1668. They
married 1610.
Issue John Chew b. abt. 1616 and Nathaniel Chew.

Wilson Fitzgerald had, by Joanna Fitzgerald, a daughter,
Elizabeth R. Fitzgerald. She married Walter Wesley CHEW,
b. March 1843. They were married November 17, 1869,
and had these children
Fannie Fitzgerald Chew
Arthur Chew
Wilson Chew
Lewis Chew
The above mentioned Walter Wesley Chew was the son
of Wesley Chew, b. abt. 1805, who was married to Eliza,
b. 1806.
Wesley Chew was the son of Jefferey Chew and Agnes Wolf
Jefferey was the son of Jonathan Chew and Mary Sweeten.
What I seek tonight, is information on that list of children
above, especially the only chew I ever met in person, my
Cousin Fanny (my grandmother's cousin). I knew her.
Hope someone can help me remember this tender-hearted
lady...
Vince
Darn - you know I have this book on order! I wish it would come in

I am looking for info concerning John And Sarah CHEW from Somersetshire,
England.
They immigrated to the colonies in 1622. John was born in 1590 in
Worcestershire, England.
I am interested in their parents and siblings.
Thanks,

This is great! Thanks, Debi... Oh, by the way, my philosophy is "suck
in all the info you can get" so that you will have something to verify
one way or another later. If you try to verify from the start, you will
likely waste lots of time, which, if you are my age, you can't afford to
do (50). I know of some who had lots of family input, and spent years,
and have a couple or a few dozens of individuals. Solid, maybe, but
that is all. In a few months, I have found, with intensive efforts and
help from persons like you, oh, over a thousand.

Interesting list of surnames. On the Chew line, I come through John's son
Samuel and some MD connections - none of whom you mentioned.
However, I was interested in two of your surnames - Britts and Swayne.
Apparently Bretz was changed to Britts in some cases when the families
headed south - I am in contact with several Britts folks, if you are
interested. Also one of my families that settled first in CT and then
moved down to the Newark/Elizabeth area was Swain - wondered what the
chances were that it tied in with your people - though I guess there were
Swayne Swaynes as well.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Regards.
