Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
I am still trying to get myself organized but wanted to make some sort of
contribution to the list.
I descend from John's son Samuel who lived in MD. A distant cousin has
sent me a lot of information he has compiled from various sources. There
is a very useful book, especially for those with southern NJ Chew
connections - titled Genealogy of the Chew Family, by Robert L. Chew
(Gloucester County (NJ) Historical Society - see their website for
complete ordering information. The book has a lot of references and
background on the family and he has an index of names that include all the
information in the book on the various individuals. It's on the order of
$30 including S&H.
I also have assorted copies of chapters from books and so forth so would be
willing to do some checking for list members - keep in mind that my focus
is on the MD line, especially that of Samuel and the lines that are
related to me (Wynnes, Ayres, Randall, Browne, Hobbs, Ensey). There is a
book titled The Pillars of MD that has an excellent chapter on the Chew
family and there is a chapter on the history of MD from another book whose
title I don't know offhand. And I don't guarantee instant turnaround time
- I do look ups for Esses Co NJ and try to do my own research and
correspondence as well.
Did you realize, for insstance, that at the same time the Puritans were
settling in Massachusetts and the rest of New England (got lots of those on
my mother's side), they were also settling in Virginia? When the VA
authorities told them they had to attend the Anglican church, the Puritans
moved up into MD. Then when Lord Baltimore told his agents to get rid of
the Puritans, the Puritans defeated Lord Baltimore's forces in the Battle
of the Severn in 1655. Several years later Cromwell died and the Puritans
and Lord Baltimore came to terms - restoring his position and forcing him
to sign the Act of Religious Toleration in MD. So you Chews and some of
your related families from MD and VA were instrumental in that little bit
of American history. Apparently one of my guys was even a "casualty"
(fatality or just casualty, it didn't say). So there is your history
lesson for today.
Any list members out there with the family names I show above?
Regards. I'll be away next week.

Well last night's sudden violent storm not only messed up my computer, but
blew my air conditioner (we were away from home at the time and did not have
a chance to "protect" our stuff). This will teach us. Meanwhile, while my
computer does still work, though it's taken a toll on me just getting it
right, but air conditioner is gone and while I've been here in the "cool"
rec room downstairs savoring what little cool air we have (100 degrees
today), I realize what our ancestors must have felt like. Can you imagine
tolerating this heat and humidity in the early days with those long, hot
dresses, suits, no electricity for fans, no cool restaurants to go to (yes I
did). I admire them much more now!
I guess if anyone is still in town we can get these lists rolling. I had
planned to get more information today to post, but needed to fix this
computer.
Take care,
