Hi - I just found this:
ITEM #9551
April 5, 1748
The Pennsylvania Gazette
Philadelphia, April 5. 1748. WHereas Anne, the wife of
Nathaniel Chew, at the head of Timber creek, in Gloucester
county, has disposed of some of her said husbands goods,
without his knowledge, and ran him in debt; this is therefore
to desire all persons not to trust her any more on his
account, nor to buy any goods of her, that she may offer for
sale, for he will pay no debts of her contracting, nor allow
of her selling any of his goods, from the date hereof.
NATHANIEL CHEW.
Now would this be the Nathaniel Chew, son of Richard Chew?

ITEM #80516
July 1, 1795
The Pennsylvania Gazette
WINCHESTER, June 22.
Copy of a letter from Major Doyle, commanding at Fort Massac, to General
Robertson.
Fort Massac, May 2, 1795.
"SIR,
"I have scarce time to inform you of a very unfortunate circumstance that
happened on the 29th ult. to a certain Mr. << Chew>> , who had lately left
New Madrid, with an intention to become an inhabitant of the South Western
Territory. He left this garrison in the morning - in the evening, I was
informed by a boat from Post Vincennes, of a pirogue being on shore, with a
number of bark canoes round it. I ordered a command to the spot instantly,
to recover every visible property, and to bring the body of Mr. << Chew>>
to the garrison, which was effected without delay. His body was barbarously
mangled - several of his negroes were found killed near the place, and one
white man. He passed this garrison with eleven negroes and four white men.
The bearer will inform you how little time he allowed me to write to you.
"Your obedient servant,
"EDWARD DOYLE.
Brigadier General Robertson,
Mero District."
P.S. The person mentioned in the above letter was Col. Samuel T. << Chew>> ,
Maryland. He was killed upon the south bank of the Ohio, between the mouths
of the rivers Tennessee and Cumberland.

Hi -
I don't know if you saw this on other lists, but there are several Chew's
listed in the papers. This is just one!

I am looking for the connection between Larkin Chew and Anne Chew who
married William Johns(t)on and suspected daughter Ann 'Nancy" Johnson
who married Phillip Ballard about 1740 in Orange County, Virginia. They
named a son Larkin Ballard. Pat shanks
Hello. Pat: I'm a descendant of William Johnston and his first wife, Ann
Chew Johnston. I have never heard of a daughter Ann (Nancy) in their line of
eleven children. Children: Joseph (d.y.); Robert, b. 1726; Larkin, b.1727;
Judith, b. 1729; John, b.1730; Benjamin, b. 1732 and married Dorothy Jones
(my line); James, b. 1737; William, b. 1738; Hannah, b. 1739; Richard, b.
1740; and Elizabeth, b. 1742. This was the last child as Ann died and
William Johnston remarried twice, first to Betty Taylor and then to
Elizabeth Wyatt Coleman, widow of Samuel and mother of Frances Coleman who
married Hannah Johnston, dau of William and Ann Chew.
Had there been an Ann who married abt 1740, surely she would have needed to
have been born by at least 1725, if not before.
Perhaps you have information that has escaped those of us who have been
working on this family for so many years, as well as the Johnston Clan who
put so much effort into the Johnston research. The Ballard name has never
cropped up for me. Keep me posted. Virginia Meeker

My source doesn't list an Ann Nancy as one of their children, they had 11,
but they had a Larkin.

One branch of the CHEWs family married into the TUSCARORA nation of
Western New York state.
The starting person was William Johnson CHEW (abt 1765 - 1812/15) who
married Margaret MT. PLEASANT (d. Aug 1846). William's parents were
Joseph CHEW (abt 1725, Va. - 24 Sep 1798, Montreal, P.Q., Canada) and
Grace DESHON (13 Aug. 1735, possibly Conn. - ?).
Anyone with more information or seeking information should contact me.
Thank you.
I would love to have your information. I am related to the Chews through
Francis Chew married Col. Henry Downs in Mechlenburg Co., N. C. in 1750.
Their daughter Midlred Downs married James Brewster in 1780. Thier
daughter Charlotta Pierce Brewster married Reese McGregor. Their daughter
Isabella Jane married Samuel Hunt Scott. their son John Hugh Scott married
Alice Matilda Guinn and thier daughter is my mother.
Any info about the family before that point would be greatly appreciated.

KDWlam:
sniemi was correct in her line of Chews. Benjamin of Clivden in PA comes
from this line:
John (Jamestown)
Samuel
Benjamin (Your William was brother of this Benjamin)
Samuel (Doctor of Maidstone)
Benjamin of Clivden PA
Therefore, you are not directly linked to Benjamin of Clivden. But he was "in
the family".

Are you researching Col. John Chew? If so, I have some interesting stuff you
might like to have....including his parents and grandparents.... Let me know
and I'll be glad to send the entire 13 page document to you. I am connected
to to the Chews through my grandfather Franklin Zebedee Shelton, his father
Edmond Spearman Shelton who married Nancy Malinda Burgess, and way back in the
line a Chew married a Burgess. I do not have any current Chew information
and my Burgess line stops with my Great Grandmother, Nancy Malinda Burgess but
goes back to colonial times and William Burgess of England.
I wrote this to you last week and you have not given me any answers. I
have the Chew book. Mart

Hi:
It's me again.
John Chew was born 16 Jul 1587, England. He had 5 ch, one being Samuel who
was born 1634 Va. d 15 Mar 1677, A.A.Co., Md. He had 9 ch, one being your
William and one being Benjamin who had Samuel, the father of Benjamin, who
is driving us all nuts!!
(I think) My source shows John(of Va.) as being s/o John Chewe. He, John
Chewe, had John, Samuel, Dyna, Susan, Hester and Sarah.
I'm in a hurry. Going to hear Cyndi Howell talk about researching online.
Talk to you later.

Wow,
Thanks everyone who replied to my query. I think perhaps, I should rephrase
my question. This is my CHEW line:
John Chew 1585-England
Samuel 1630-Virginia
William 1665 Maryland
Benjamin 1700- Maryland
Benjamin 1730-Maryland
Richard 1756-Virginia
Benjamin 1801-West Virginia
OK, that's the brief version. So, my question is, which line does Benjamin
(The Supreme Court, PA) come from? I have been to Ron Ulrich's Chew page, but
as mentioned before, it is difficult to follow as there are so many repeat
names. I will check it out again and see if I can follow it. I was only
curious.
"sniemi" I am related to WELLS, CHEWS married WOOTANs and WOOTANS married into
the WELLS family. I don't think that is as direct as you mentioned.
David- I have been to the Clivedent web site a while back. I didn't see any
ancestor information on it though.
I would like to know if anybody knows who John's (1585-England) siblings were.
Maybe that way I can try to figure out if any of them came over to the US. If
the siblings did not come over then my family story is just that, a story.
Kristy: Benjamin Chew was born 29 Nov 1722 at Maidstone, Anne Arundel Co.,
Maryland. He died 20 Jan 1810 at Philadelphia, Penn.
He married twice. First m had 5 ch., all girls; second m.,9 ch., 2 males.
He was s/o Samuel, s/o Benjamin, s/o Samuel, s/o John and Sarah.
I can give you more data, but want to see if this go's through. I have
sent a number of email's, but are either not deliverable, as to your email
address, or not accepted because of the format.
I think I have format figured out, we will see.
