Hi Everyone,
I went to Fort Meigs in Perrysburg to find out what I could about Dequindre's Company of Riflemen and Audrain's Company of Spies. I did find a book Michigan's Early Military Forces by Barnett. I think this is the same information that Kristen posted -
Joseph Chevalier who was a private in Dequinde's company. He served from 04/21/1812 to 08/16/1812. The remarks listed said, "surrendered at Detroit". There was also a Joseph Chevallies who was a private with Audrain's Spies. He served from 07/01/1814 to 07/31/1814.
This book goes into the story of Hulls surrender of Detroit with out a shot being fires. There is not much about The company of spies. They are not sure what they did. Ii am compiling a list of all the men that served in both companies that Joseph served in and the 1820 census of Detroit and the names of those that were in those lists that ended up here on the Maumee river. I want to see if there is any pattern to it. I am putting them in an excel program.
This Saturday is the first meeting this session in Monroe Michigan of the French Canadian Historical Society. I will be going early to look through their library. I hope to find a group there that will be going to the Burton Collection in the Detroit Library. This is where I was told by the historian at Ft. Meigs to go to get the best information. I have no sense of direction and I do not feel safe getting lost in downtown Detroit. I want to go in a group!!!
In Monroe I hope to find out where I need to look fo find church/baptism records for Detroit for the 1812-1813 birth of Joseph Chevalier.
Does anyone want me to look something up while I am there? Kay is there something on Jean Baptist Sanscraniant that you need? He shows up on the list of the men who fought in the War of 1812. He was in Couture's Company. He served 08/04/12 - 08/18/12 and is listed as surrendered at Monroe.
