Kaye,
Yes, Kaye I do have more information and Lydia because she was my great great
grandfather-Byron Dear's sister. I will try to pull that info out tomorrow
and send it to you. Maybe I should say as soon as possible because my nephew
is very critical and in the hospital in ICU unit and everything is very
uncertain right now. I don't know if I have more info than you or less but I will
share what I have. I have seen it spelled Russell but I don't know which is
correct.
Cheryl
Kaye:
I think I remember someone emailing about the Dear family. I print
all the emails I get, so I'll check my file at home and get back with
you. Hope I can find something.
On a personal note: My family is supposed to be getting together
with Diane's family. (Uncle Rolland's daughter) I'm going to let
them all know about your research and see if any of them have
anything to add. I'll let you know when we set a date. Sometime
Sandy comes down to join us for the "Euchre nights" as we call them.
I don't have contact info for her, so the next time you call or email
her maybe you could pass it on and she can contact Di to find out
when, or she can call me: 419-727-1079.

She married John Floro and is the mother of Ester Ann. Ester married
1st
Francis Bovia and 2nd Henry Finken. Ester was known as Hettie.
Hettie and
Francis had James Franklin Bovia (Frank). Frank married Elsie Cover

Hey all!!
I just wanted to share a tidbit. Peggy found a book by Wilmot A.
Ketcham, which was published in Toledo, copywright 1904 titled "The
Dance at Joe Chevalier and Other Poems". She faxed me a copy of the
poem and as soon as I can get to my dad's I'll scan it in and pass it
along to everyone. It's basically a poem about going to Joe's and
dancing and drinking, but it's still interesting. I'll get it to all
as soon as I can. If for some reason I can't get it scanned soon
enough, I'll just type it into a document and attach it. Just in
case anyone wants to search for it on their own, it was published, as
I said, in Toledo, OH, copywright 1904 by The Franklin Printing and
Engraving Company with illustrations by The Toledo Tile Club.

Kristen,
That is great! I am wondering just how much information, about the War of
1812, the National Archives has. We found out a lot about some relatives
from the Civil War, by writing them. Hmmm think I will look into
it. (Unless you already are. I don't want to step on toes.) Thanks for
sharing all the things that you do. You are a TREMENDOUS help.

Hi Everyone,
I was able to go the the Family History Library on lunch today. I found a listing of Michigan men who served in the War of 1812. It did list a Joseph Chevalier who was a private in Dequinde's company. He served from 04/21/1812 to 08/16/1812. The remarks listed said, "surrendered at Detroit". There was also a Joseph Chevallies who was a private with Audrain's Spies. He served from 07/01/1814 to 07/31/1814.
As I have time, I will try to find any more information that I can.

Glad to see this site alive again.
I have also been pretty sick and had surgery, but doing much better now.
Anyone heard from Sandra lately?
Here is where I fit in.
Capitolia Chevalier had a sister Lillian Chevalier who is my great great
grandmother, She married Byron Dear, they had Joseph B. Dear, Lyman G. Dear,
Arthur Dear, and I believe a George or Earl Dear. My great grandfather was Joseph
B. Dear who married Etta E. Rose. They had 4 children, 1 girl, 3 boys. My
grandmother was their daughter Leola M. Dear. She married Jesse E. Briggs and they
had 2 children, my mother Lillian M and Joseph B. Joseph B. died around age
10 Months. So now you know how I fit in. Hope to get active again myself.
Thank you everyone for all your help and maybe I can add some information.

Hi Group,
I have something I thought I had already passed this around. but just to make sure.
Pat Tucker from the Toledo area found this up in Lansing Michigan in the court records: This is from Joseph Chevalier's(born 1813) FATHER also named Joseph Chevalier. This would make the petitioner the Grandfather to the murdered Joseph Chevalier (born 1839-Detroit) I need to find more about this one - I found a Joseph Chevalier who fought is in the war of 1812 under Major Witherall, the unit is from Detroit. Any suggestions on getting the war of 1812 records are welcomed! Also this family seems to have come from Fort Michilmacinac (spelling?) in northern-Lower Michigan. There are several Chevalliers recorded there. I am just not sure how to proceed in the research.
This is what Pat Tucker found:

Hello, Marilyn
Marilyn, unless you made it to my Mom's funeral in 2001, it was probably in
'96 at my daughters Wedding. (unless your Dad's graduation was after that,
or Brett's wedding shower) I haven't lived up North since '98.
The more folks we have doing this research, the better off we will be. My
grandma Johnson used to say, "Many hands make light work!" We can help
each other keep things straight. when I make a mistake, (Doesn't happen
often just almost always!) you guys can bring it to my attention and we
can share info so that we can all have more.
I am hoping I can come up towards the last of the summer and do some
work. It would be fun to see everyone and meet Sandra face to face. We
shall see.
It would be a good idea to write down all the stories you remember or even
have recently been told. If we all do that we can put them together and
make mores sense of our puzzle. That is what I am going to do.
Right now, I am working on an open house and Jubilee that my church is
putting on so I will be busy with that but am still trying to get some done
with this genealogy. It seems there is always something to keep me from it
and I am choosing to make it one of my priorities.
Take care all.
Grins,
Kaye
Hello everyone.
Thank you all for such a warm welcome to the list!! Kathy, it was
nice "hearing" from you. When was the last time we saw each other?
I know it's been a long time! This has been so exciting for me. I
absolutely love hearing all the old stories and learning about our
ancestors. I look forward to finding more information during my own
research as well as connecting with all of you for information.
There was a gentleman who had a rather old posting on the
geneology.com site that was interested in descendents of Joe Jr. I
tried to email but got no response. I wondered if he was part of the
list by chance. I copied and pasted his posting below in case anyone
has heard of him. It would be interesting to be able to get in touch
with him to find out what he knows. I also found out that Manhattan
was once a township in Ohio and eventually became part of Toledo and
Oregon. I have a couple pages of history on the township, but
there's no mention of Chevalier. They did have a newspaper call the
Advertiser. I plan to look it up at the downtown library hopefully
this week. I'll let you all know what I find. Sandra, I will be
calling soon. I would love to meet with you to see what info you
have. I have some very old photos that may possibly be from the
Chevalier side, but may also be from my grandfathers side. Kathy,
I'll see if my dad can scan them so I can get them to you. You may
know which side they are from, whether it is Grandma's or Grandpa's.
Love to all!
Here is his posting:

Looking for ancestors and descendants of Joseph Chevalier. He was
murdered (shot in the chest in a tavern over an arguement while
playing euchre) by a man named Washington King on 21 November 1862 in
Manhattan (Toledo, Ohio, USA). He was 23 years old when he died,
making his date of birth in 1837 or 1838. His father was Joseph
Chevaller.

Hello everyone -
I am Lilias's grandson, Marty (my father is Ron Miller). While my family
was saddened by Grandma's passing, it was nice being able to spend some time
with her while she was in hospice. It was also nice meeting Sandra.
My father gave me all of Grandma's pictures so that I can scan them in to
share with family. There are quite a few from the 30's, however, most are
from the 60's-80's. My scanning is about 75% complete, and I hope to have
everything done by early summer. Many of the pictures have handwriting on
the back identifying the subjects, and I am preservng all of that
information with the scanned images. I would be more than happy to share
them with anyone interested - it will probably be easiest for me to simply
send a CD to anyone that is interested. I will also check with my father
for any other photos, but I think I have all of them.

Hello to all on the list. Welcome Marilyn!
I too have taken a rather long break froom geneology. I did try to get intouch with some of you a few months ago. Aunt Lilas, granddaughter to Joseph and Julia, passed away. She was in hospice for a while and had asked if I had heard from any of you. She asked how Katherine (She called you Laura May's granddaughter) was doing.
I also had trouble with computers and I am still trying to re-enter all info. It has made me want to start researching again. AND it has proven to me the value of backing up data!!
I have started by (hopefully)scanning ALL photos of the family and trying organizing them. I would be glad to share any that I have.

Here is my pedigree in a nutshell.
Joseph and Julia Chevalier
Capitolia Chevalier married William Meyers
Laura May Meyers married William Bernoir
Elsie Thelma Benore married Garold Francis Bovia (Bouvier originally)
Garold Franklin Bovia married Lois Johnson
Katherine Bovia
My dad Gary was the oldest son of Elsie and Marilyn's dad, Marvin, is the
youngest son.
Just a refresher on where I fit in. I am very willing to send a gedcom of
what I have on the Chevalier's to anyone who is interested. Even more
willing to receive one so that I can compare and edit what I have.
Grins,
Kaye
Welcome Marilyn!
Weird but I am the list administrator for this list yet didn't get your
email. For that matter, the letter I sent last week didn't get to anyone
or at least the archives.
Well, anyway! The murder victim Joseph Chevalier was the son of Joseph
Chevalier and Jane (Germal?) who was his first wife. We are descended from
Joseph and his second wife Julia.
I am so happy that you will be joining us. We have been very quiet for
some time but I am hoping we will get going again.
Great to have you on board!
Grins,
Kaye (Kathy)
Hello, all!
It has been a very long time since we have had any contact. I, for one,
have been ill for a few years but am healthy again. Thank God! I have
been very negligent in my job as list moderator. I sincerely apologize for
that.
From this day forward, I will try to motivate myself and others to work on
this noble line.
I would love to hear from anyone that is not too upset with me for dropping
the ball. (And if you are upset with me, well, I can only ask that you
forgive me and please know that it was not by choice.)
I spoke with a cousin today, Peggy Bovia, who is thrilled with the tidbits
I was able to give her. I couldn't remember everything and will be working
on that also. I seem to have sometimers. Sometimes I remember and
sometimes I forget. ;^) I didn't think to invite her to join the list but
I will. Speaking with her has inspired me to get back to work. Yeayyyy
Peggy!!!
I lost much of what I had due to computer problems and the hard copies are
in storage someplace. Sheesh, gotta love me! (Ok so you don't but I wish
you would!) LOL So anyway, I will probably be asking lots of questions.
Thanks for being here on this VERY quiet list.
Grins,
Kaye
One never knows when one tiny piece will pull the puzzle together
I recently found out that I'm a descendent of Jospeh and Julia.
Their daughter, Capitolia, is my great, great grandmother. I'm
trying to find out where Joseph, Jr. fits in. We didn't find him
listed as one of Joe & Julia's children but we do know that he was
shot and killed over a euchre game in Novemer, 1862, in Toledo, OH.
Is Julia's husband Joe, Jr.? Joe, Jr. would only have been 23 when
he died but we know that Joe & Julia had 7 or 8 children so we're
looking to clarify. Anyone with information please email me. Thank
you.
