Sunday afternoon I spent driving around the East side to see what was still there. Millard Ave. has no homes left on it - It is now all part of the Oil company. I am not sure if Bay Street is Bay Port Road. - still trying to figure it out. The house that both Capatola and Theodore died in is not there any more. It supposedly burned down in the 1970's. All that is left is a cement(?) foundation is someone's backyard. I spoke to the owner a year ago and she did not know who had lived there.
The street where Joseph was said to have lived has no more houses for 1 block from Front street. The River has been moved away from where it had been. The property where he would have lived is now an abandoned building. It does not look old enough to have been there in the 1880'-1890's
I went through the area where Joseph Lionard dit Rejard's descendant were granted land. It is farm land/ small houses. Only one looks old enough to have been there prior to 1890.
I went a little further out Little Cedar Point Road heading to Little Cedar Point. There seems to be the remnants to a small grouping of homes. When I had been to the ETHS I asked someone about the area and was told there was a very early small (town) called the Cedar Point Settlement. I cannot find this documented anywhere. But it does seem to have a cluster of older homes.
The description of Joseph Chevalier's cabin and the fact that Theodore was mention to have been born at Little Cedar Point. I tend to think it out on the Nature Preserve. It is not visible from the road. You can see the Point from Maumee Bay State Park. I took photos from the park but did not have my telescopic lens with me.
Aunt Lilas had said that her ggrandfathers cabin stood just a few feet away from the hunting club lodge. and that was out near the tip. She was taken out they when she was young and shown where his cabin was. I am still trying to find photo's that they will let me copy of the hunting lodge.
Peter Navarre's cabin was the closest neighbor to Old Joe in the early days. His cabin has been moved several times. To see a photo of the cabin check out http://www.mlloyd.org/gen/navarre/peter.html It now is in the Toledo Botanical Gardens. I work about 150 ft. from the cabin. The art club/gallery that I work at is located in the TBG. It is part blessing and part curse - everytime I see it I get more curious about family history. My husband, Bob, tells me I am getting obsessive about it.
Is there anything or anyplace you would like me to check on?
Sorry I rattled on so long!

Good Morning,
I had a very nice and informative day yesterday at the seminar in Monroe. Although I did not find anyone there researching the same families, I did find some people there who were helpful. I don't know where to start.
- I picked up a second book from the seminar with wonderful information in it. I was hoping- if it is agreeable with everyone I would send it around to all of you to look at. Would it be OK if I sent it to one of you with labels for the others so it can be passed on?
in it I found a reference to a book called "Dance at Joe Chevallier" by Ketchum. I found the person who mentioned the book in his article. He is the curator for the museum in Monroe. It is a long out of print book(1910) that the only copy is in the archives at the museum. I have to make arrangements to see it. they have very limited hours. give me a week or two to get a look at it.
- In the seminar book is a reference to . Bovia side I believe. He was one of the first to have a land deed in the vicinity of the Raisen River. I saw in a slide presentation the signature of this man along with he signature of Francis Navarre. I found talked to the presenter of the slide and I will have to make arrangement to find a copy of this as well.
- I found several people who know where to find the family history of the Sanscrante family. I have their email. but they will be out of touch for a week or two.
- A lot of the collections go back to very early Michigan territory history. This includes when this area around the Maumee River was part of the Michigan Territory. The French histories include this area.
-The Monroe Historical Commission Archives Special Collections expert brought a book in and described some of the photos. One of the names mentioned off the back of a photo dated in the 1870 was Bovia. I will check this out. I need to make an appointment to view these. They are open limited times. It would be helpful if I went there with a list of family to look for.
- I have order a book and it will be sent to me of the burial records for St. Antoines of the Raisen River. I did see the entry for Joseph Lionard Cavalier dit Rajard (died 1813). My cousin, I believe has the other one they had there and I will see if it has any information in it. I still do not have positive prooof that this is the Grandfather to our Joseph. It is most likely.
- I have been sent the maps to the area for the 1833 distribution of land in the Maumee area. It does show the land grant to the descendants of J.L dit R.. It is a little south of where I thought it was. I will photo copy these and send them to you all. I think there is a website that one of these can be downloaded from. I have to find it again. I believe it is at the Peter Navarre website. The land tract is south-west of the Navarre tract.
- I ran into some one at the East Toledo Historical Society meeting last Thursday who may be related. this is some of what she sent me. :
Have Thomas (Dear/Deer) Bodi B: Jan. 1, 1917 OH D: Dec. 11, 1993 Belle Center, OH SS #274-15-5852
Son or adopted son of Cora Rose Chevalia who married Claude's grandmothers brothers Adam and Andrew.
That must have made for a good family relationship. Brother or stepbrother to Thomas is Norman Bodi who died in Kent, Washington April 1975.
and This:
Have little info on Cora (McKillips) Chavalia, however she did marry a brother of Claude's Grandmother, Adam Bodi, just recently received more info on Louise Cataract that married John LaDuke. Forgot to check out "Deer" name but can tell you that in the late 1930's and early 1940's a "Deer" family lived on Main Street in Sylvania, Ohio. The house was recently up for sale this past spring or summer. If you are facing north on Main Street at the corner of Brint road it would be the 4th or 5th piece of property on the west side (left) of the road. It is a old farmhouse, rebricked, I think and sits on an angle lot back off the street. It would be about half way from Brint/Main Street intersection to the beginning of the curve.
Her family name that she is researching is KELLOGG.!!! Her side has been here for a long time and she was always told that they were part native american. THis side she is still working on. She lives here in Toledo and I will try to get in touch with her on Monday.
I'm sure I am missing a lot.
I plan on visiting Aunt Lilas on Tuesday if all goes well. I plan on showing her what I have found so far.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Hello,
I went to the Frenchtown Genealogy meeting today. I will make this brief and give you the details late. (short on time tonight)
I met an anthropologist who has spent years researching his specialty - the French of the Monroe and Detroit area and the French families in the Maumee River area. It turns out he is one of the speakers for next Saturday's seminar. He lives in Oregon Ohio and does research for the University of Toledo. He knew most of the French names that I gave him in connection to the family. He has heard of Old Joe and knows well the family of Joseph Lionard dit Rengard. He says from the little I told him today he is fairly sure that they are father and son. He is going back to research for us and he will email me the information. He believes the Chevalier family is part of the Cavalier family. Somewhere along the line the spelling changed. He also knows a Paul Cavalier who has researched this family extensively. He will try to contact him for me.
The family papers for this man is being held in the Hayes Presidential Compound in Fremont Ohio. They suggested this would be the best place for me to go over all his research. I was given the name of about 4 books as well to read while I am down there. I might be able to find one or two at Toledo or Monroe Geneology Libraries.
I will be joining this organization and attend their monthly meetings. They seem to be very interested. They are all very friendly and helpful.
Cheryl - I asked him about John Baptist Romain dit Sanscrante. I did not get his name out all the way when he interrupted with a smile and finished his name and told me he knew all about him and that HE was a very interesting character. He did not have all the information with him. He will get back to me on that family (and the daughter Elizabeth that married John Baptist Boviare) He knows of the Benor / Burnor family. One person there was also a Burnor descendant and said they would have their information with them next week.
As soon as I get any information I will pass it on.

Hi,
I have been having trouble accessing the information on the website my cousin had given me. Here is the correct/updated website. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mifchs/
This contains information on the seminar I will be attending. It also has a place to post quiries. In it I found people searching for :
Cadaret. (linked with family)
Aristide Chevaudier dit Lepine (a possibility)
BERNOR line (sounds like Benore)
Running short on time. will check on it later
SAndra
Sandra,
It sounds like you found a pot of gold as the Irish would say. That is just
great. I have a lot of info in a little notebook running around here
somewhere but I can't find it right now. My computer is messed up so that
doesn't help either. I have been trying to organize all this stuff and get
it filed so I can find it but nevertheless it's lost and I had it last week.
I think I have the death date of Joseph Chevalier and info I got out of the
court house the last time I was in Toledo in 93. As soon as I fine it I will
sent you the info I have. Sorry, trying to get more organized. Have you
found the newspaper article about Julia's burial? You might of told me I
don't remember. Thank you for all your work in this research. I can't thank
you enough. Do you know what or where Ford Post is? They did the burial
service for Byron Dear, also in the court house ledgers it says he died in
the infirmary and according to the newspaper it said he died at home, so I'm
not sure. Have you ever hear of a Julia S. Hopkins she is the one who took
my grandfather & brothers to the orphanage in June 1890 in Xenia, OH? Thank
you again.

In response to Sandra's questions, here is what I have come up with in
regards to Joseph's children from a previous marriage:
I found a son, Alexander, who was born abt 1843, died 29 Aug 1926 in Toledo,
Ohio and was buried 31 Aug 1926 in the North Oregon Cemetery, Toledo, Ohio.
He married Nancy Doogan on 7 Feb 1867 in Toledo, Ohio.
Alexander and Nancy had the following children:
John (b. Jan 1873 Ohio, d. 28 Aug 1947 Toledo,Ohio, md. Clara Burnon,
Charles Chevalier's first wife)
Joseph E (b. 27 Mar 1874 Ohio, md. Cora Stantson 1 Apr 1927 Ohio. Cora was
born on 3 Mar 1884 Ohio and was previously married to Adam Bodi).
Frank
Dora
Ida
Robert (b. 11 Apr 1884 Toledo, Ohio, d. 25 Jul 1967 Toledo, Ohio, md. 1st,
Laura Wilson on 18 Aug 1926 Bowling Green, Ohio and 2nd Sophia)
Also, I found a book, "The Michigan Surname Index", v. II that listed a
Joseph Chevalier b. around the decade of 1810 who married a Mary Boyea.
That information was provided by the Flint Genealogical Society in Flint,
Michigan. I don't know if this is any relation.
Hopefully, some of this information will be helpful.
Kristen

Hi again,
I made a mistake in my first posting yesterday. Joseph's wife in 1860 according to the census was Jane. The first Joseph (jr.) was not listed. He would have been out on his own by then. He was murdered two years later. There was one other Chevalier living one to two houses away - William (age-41) with wife Mary Ann (30) one daughter Emily (3). The house in between was unoccupied. I am still truing to find the street name and location.
Sandra
Hi group,
I think I forgot to explain. My relative sent me the following and I think it might be Joseph Chevalier's -b. 1813 - parents. We will try to peice it together. But - has anyone heard of them?
> In Denissen's, I found pg 195 a Frances Cadoret who married
> 1811 Jos Lionard dit Chevalier, b Montreal, widower of
> Geneveva Charbonneau, son of Joseph Lionard dit Chevalier and
> Louisa Durocher. NOTE: his name could've changed to Lionard
> or Leonard later on. Are you familiar with DIT names?

Hi,
I t has been a while since I have been able to research anything. BUT - on Saturday, Sept 28th, The The French-Canadian Heritage Society of Michigan is holding a seminar in Monroe Mi. This is just south of Detroit and the place where a good deal of the records are stored. I was just checking on the internet for a place to look for additional information on the Joseph Chevalier (b.1813) born in either Detroit or Canada, when I ran into this site and found someone on their list of officers was a relative! She just came back from Salt Lake City on her annual research trip.
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~frenchtownfchsm/
I have contacted her and told her about our Joseph Chevalier. She said she would be glad to help. She knows a great deal of the books and holdings and knows where to find things. But before I go down I had a few questions.
Has anyone found a birth date for Joseph? from census records it seems to be around 1813.
His first wife was Jane. Does anyone know her maiden name?
Does anyone have information about his children by the previous marriage I have:
Joseph b.1839 d. 1862
Alexander b. 1845
Emiline b. 1849
Elmyra b. 1851
Peter b. 1856
Joseph b. 1858
Adiline b. 1859
the birth dates are estimates from the 1860 census - name spelled Shavalia
Has anyone been able to research the names:
Joseph Lionard dit Rejard (Rengard) or
Jos Lionard dit Chevalier, b Montreal, widower of
Geneveva Charbonneau, son of Joseph Lionard dit Chevalier and
Louisa Durocher. NOTE: his name could've changed to Lionard
or Leonard later on.
Any information that I may not have on this section? I would not like to spend too much time on information that we might already have.
Hope everyone is well and happy!
