Hi Guy,
They all go together. My ggrandmother Etta E. Rose (Dear) who married Joseph
B Dear, Grandma Dear's sister Aunt Corey Married Andrew Bodi according to my
mother who is 79 yrs old. She remembers him because of his mustache. Yes,
Bodi, Dear, Rose, Chevalier, Hayes, Courcher or something like that spelling.
If all of us put our stuff together I think we will have a full picture.
Have to make dinner, more later.

Hi,
I have put some postings on the Lucas county list. Beginning to recieve some replies. Kathy, who is in Italy is researching the Bodi family. Also, a year ago I went to the Oregon-Jerusalm Township Historical society. I was given the name Bodi as someone who was interested in the Chevalier family. THey did not know the connection and I was not able to find her. I will keep trying.
Here is an message she sent me
Hi Sandra, I heard about you coming in from a friend at the diocese
office. I ordered the films for St. Joseph and some other church there
in Ottawa County. I research the surname Boddy but doubt it is the same
as your Bodi. I'm so anxious to receive the film with the burials at
St. Antoine's. I am hoping this means it is St. Antoine's on the River
Raisin in Monroe, MI. I found through the Monroe Library baptisms for
my gr grandma and her siblings in 1834 (that time frame) from St.
Antoine's which is now Immaculate Conception church. I had read that
the graveyard I believe has no stones now so am anxious to read about
the early burials. I suspect I'll try and start posting info from that
film eventually. How are you doing in your research? Could you look
out for the names Remelspacher or any variable spelling and Kuns or Kunz
please. And let me know. Thank you. Aren't the diocesan ladies
fantastic?
Here is somethinng I posted back. I hope I get some repies . Any information that might clarify the Bodi, Beaudin and Cluckie names would be great.
The handwriting on the church records are very bad for the early ones and the microfilm was very light. Very hard to read. . Sister told me that Bowling Green did a better job of coping the records. The Diocese does not have a good reader and will probable not be able to use BG copies.
Kathy, you will probably have better luck deciphering the record. They are mostly all in Latin.
The names were spelled in various ways. I say Boddi, Bodi Bodin and Boddi. For Cluckie there was also Cluquie, Cluckey and some that the handwritting was so bad you might not be able to tell.
On the Chevalier family I have seen less variations. except for the VERY early ones. Property that was sold By Joseph Chevalier in the 1837-9(?) was given by treaty to a Joseph Cavalier Rengard. This name also appears in other places dealing with the very early family. I have found it in Detroit as well.
At Synod Hall there was a question to why the records for St. Joseph on the Touissant also contained records for St. Antoines on the Raisen River. From what I can tell some of the same families that were living near each other in that area in Michigan, that I saw in those records that I found in Monroe were also settling in the East Toledo and Toussaint River area. They were mostly French names. Among these were the Navarre family. Most people in the Lucas county area will recognize that name.
There was a murder in Toledo in 1862. Joseph Chevalier's son Joseph (b. 1839 in Detroit) was murdered. His friend David Navarre (son of Robert, Peter's brother) was standing next to him when he was shot. I found transcripts of the trial in the Blade. The list of people is interesting. Lots of French names, Lots of well known families. Interesting reading. Disturbingly detailed.
Kathy, when you get the rolls, if you find any of these names please let me know. At the Cathedral they did not include the records for St. Antoines. I was not able to access them at Monroe County Library.
That is all I have time for now
I have to go out of town today and will not be able to do any more till Monday night. Have a nice weekend!
Sandra
Hi Guys,
I spent the morning at the Cathedral. No answerrs just more questions. No reaal eerarly Chevalier''s like I was hoping for. This parish was founded around 1850 (cemetary in 1854) and it was very French. Here is what I found:
Comminion at St. Joseph Toussiant
John Cavalier (?) June 13, 1889 (spelling is wrong but?)
pg 12 - Confirmation June 24, 1928 by Bishop Strictch
Glen Joseph Matthew Myrum(this ws horrible handwritting. cannot be sure)
sponsored by Joseph Cavalier (?)
Baptism on June 6, 1876 Josephine Beaudin legally born 6 Oct 1875
to John Beaudin and Marie Chevalier
sponsors were Jacob Swab and MAria Swab
Joseph Thein Beaudin born Oct 2, 1876 to Julian Beaudin and Maria Chevalier
sponsors were Elaine Clique and Noel Cutcher.
Near the end of the Roll by this time and kekked coming to the name Cluckie (Cluckey annd Cluiqie) most with the same first name. Why this is interesting I have a photo with 4 women in a row. One was Aunt MeeMee one was Julia CHevalier and one was Elsie Myers Belkofer. I emailed this to Cheryl Howard and she told me she had seen that picture but there were names on the back. She had Aunt MeeMee as Mrs. Chevalier(I did not know the last name ) Julia Chevallier, Elsie Belkofer(this they had mispelled). The best part the woman that I did not know she had marked as Mrs. Cluckie.
I will send out to the Lucas County mail list an enquirey about the name Cluckie and Beaudin and see what we can find and who Mrs. Cluckie is? She has a very strong resembence to the rest in the photo. It could be a Chevalier married last name.
If you do not have the photo I am talking about please tell me and I will send it as an attaachment. I think I sent it to most already.
I ran out of time becuase I had to get to work. I have scheduled another session but it is in mid-November. I still have more to do on that roll. I am begining to believe that they were not Catholic. The few that show up could have been because spouses were Catholic. What do you think?
It is now 2:15 am! Thursday class 9-12 and 1-9:45pm drive to Oxford and back . Today -. 9-12 at Cathedral 1-5 at work at the gallery and judging a show from 7-9:30. I feel asleep on a chair and just woke up. I've got to change my sleeping habits or I will go nuts!
Sandra
Bob and I were both born in Toledo and we have never moved. Bob and I have three daughters the youngest is away as a sophmore at Miami U at Oxford OH and the middle daughter graduated 2 years ago from U of Dayton and works as an engineer. And my oldest daughter went to John Carroll University and has lived in Cleveland for nearly 8 years. None are married and no grandchildren yet.
I too had a daughter born with a built in tan and very dark hair. my other two were very blond with very fair skin. She does look like my father in law Sharon who was Captola's grandson.
I have been doing geneology for as long as I can remember, My mother got me started in this before I was married. For years I had been looking for the name Svehlas. I found the name Chevalier on the death certificate for Captola. This was less than a year ago. since then this family has become an obsession with me in family research. I do live here in Toledo, so I can do research here. I do work at the Toledo Artist Club and take classes. Even though my daughtrers are not at home they still keep me busy, I find time sporatically. This Fri I go to the Catherrdral to look at some parish records. and I am scheduled to go to the Geneology Dept at the library on Monday afternoon. I would be willing to do research for anyone. Just have patience with me.
Marilyn, I found two listings for Carrie or Carolyn Chevalier's death.
Carrie M - Lorain County (east of here just west of Cleveland) dod 3/16/1920 Vol 3243 Cert # 23494
Carolyn F - Lucas County - dod 1/28/1923 Vol 4060 Cert # 4684
Do you know which one? I could look up the obit on Monday at the library.
I had been told a lot of stories on the Belkofer and Chevalier families. Most I have been able to document. I am still working on the rest. Most stories were very accurate. Some of the stories of the older generations have been a little accurate. By that I mean, the stories were true but names were swtiched or the dates were a little off. Aunt Lillas told me when the family first came over they built a log cabin around a tree and were able to survive by making and selling corn bread to the indians. I thought she was attributing this to Xavier Belkofer in !862. She was not sure. I am inclined to believe this is on the Chevalier side and they are talking about the Chevalier that was the "first white name to build on Little Cedar Point" This was from a history book about East Toledo and they are talking about Ol' Joe Chevalier. Thye describe him as a friend and hunting partner to Peter Navarre. The author of this book, W. A Ketchum, is no longer around and I have g!
one to the library and several historical societies to try to find the original sources for this book.
I cannot find anyone who can give me aproximate dates for this. THe original log cabin was just next to where they built a hunting club lodge (1860's.?) It was mention several times in the book. The property now is inaccessable. It is in the nature preserve and no one is allowed out there. I tried. I'll try property records next.
Got to get ready for class,
Sandra
Hello all,
Here is the photo of my father with his grandmothers. Elsie was just 13 yrs old when Dad was born so she must be 14 in this photo.
I have just run my virus scan and it is brand new so there shouldn't be any viruses attached to this.
The baby is my father Garold F. Bovia age 4 or 5 mo. Holding him is Julia Chevalier age about 80. On the right is Laura May Bernoir age 39. In the rear is my grandmother Elsie Thelma Bovia 14 and on the left is Capitolia Meyers age about 60. Those are the names and dates on the back of the picture. I don't swear to the accuracy of any of the ages except Elsie as she married at 13 and had my Dad a month and a half before turning 14.
Hope you enjoy this. I was able to perk it up a bit. It went through a fire and is not in good shape. If anyone has one better, I would pay alot for a copy.
Grins,
Kaye

Hi everyone! My name is Marilyn Chevalier Lorensen and I am a "Chevalier". I was born in Wisconsin. My father was Wilbur Herbert Chevalier (my mother was Iona Ida Cook) and his father (my grandfather) was Theodore Chevalier, the son of Joseph and Julia Chevalier. Theodore was married to Caroline Schaal.
I have two older brothers and two younger sisters. My husband (Richard) and I are the parents of six children who have all left the nest now (boo hoo). No grandchildren yet...but we look forward to when that day comes. We were foster parents to over 20 foster children during the time our children were growing up. We have lived all over the country. We spent ten years in northern Minnesota, eleven years in Utah, the past year in Florida and the past two months in Georgia. We are in the process of moving back to Utah to be closer to our children. I remember visiting Chevalier cousins in Toledo and Michigan when I was younger.
My father was the youngest of eight children. His parents (Theodore and Caroline) were very poor and couldn't take care of their children (at least that is what I heard). The four older children were left on their own and the four younger children (my father included) were put in an orphanage some where near Toledo. They were all born in Toledo. I understand that Caroline had committed suicide when my father was either 14 or 16. She was born in Germany.
I have been searching for decades for information about my grandparents (Theodore and Caroline) with no luck until recently. I only new of Theodore's birthdate, but there were conflicting stories about where he was born. My father said that Theodore was born in Toledo, but yet his oldest brother always said that Theodore was born in Canada. Some years back I came across the 1990 census on which Caroline said that Theodore had been born in Michigan. Spellings of "Chevalier" were incorrect in many of the records I came across (such as their marriage record). I've always known that if I could just break open the door a bit, then all the information I was looking for would come to light. And sure enough...that is what happened. I am so thrilled to find out more about my grandfather..such as things about his parents (Joseph and Julia) and his brothers and sisters.
One of my daughters posted Theodore's name and birthdate on a geneology site and Sandra responded to it. (Sandra...you have his birth year wrong on the list you put on this list site....I'd write it here, but everything is packed away because we are in the middle of a long move cross country and we leave tomorrow. When we get settled later next week, I'll share it). I am most grateful for her responding to the inquiry and for the information she has shared with me. From that information, I went to a family history center and found some more information about Joseph's parents. Another daughter went to the big Family History Center in Salt Lake City and found Joseph and Julia and their children listed on the 1880 census. That is where we discovered that they had a daughter named Florencia (their oldest) who was 18 at the time. All of their children were born in Toledo.
I would love to hear (read) the stories of my ancestors and would be happy if the rest of you could share them with me. If you could send pictures (attach to an email message) that would be great. My mother once told me that the original Chevalier who settled in Canada from France was married to an Indian maiden. I don't know if that is true...but after learning about Joseph and his family...I have come to discover that us Chevalier's do indeed have Indian blood in us. One of my daughters was born with a built-in tan and dark hair (most of my children are fair and light-haired). One of my sisters also has a built-in tan.
I've rattled on long enough for now. Like I said, I'm in the middle of a big move and we will be on the road for the next week. I will be anxious to get my computer hooked up in our new location (Salt Lake City) to see what has been shared through this list serve. P.S.....my new job there is only a block away from the big Family History Center...so I plan to spend lots of lunch hours over there.
Marilyn

Do You Yahoo!?
Make a great connection at Yahoo! Personals.
My husband is the descendant of Joseph and Julia Chevalier. He is the son of Sharon Sepherian Belkofer and Wanda Bialecki. Sharon was the son of Elsie Myers (Meyers) and Anthony Ben Belkofer. Elsie was the daughter of Captola Chevalier (Myers, Spitz, Quinn, Kline) and William Meyers. Cap is the daughter of Joseph and Julia.
I found the Chevalier name just about a year ago. This lately has become an obsession to me. I have been talking to Bob's Aunt Lillas who still remembers her grandmother Julia. I believe I have send all of you a copy of her sitting on Julia's lap. She had been tellilng me stories of her family. So far the stories have all been able to be checked out. I loved the stories. People being struck by lightning, bootlegging, murder.
Kaye, I would love to see the photo you have of Julia and the several generations. Cherly also has seen the photo of a group of women around Julia. She has the names written on the back. I would love to know if we could compare these photos and get the people identified.
I am scheduled to go to the Synod Hall to look at the records of the Catholic church tha tmight have been where the Chevalier would have been going if they weere catholic. I am making the assumption that they may have been catholic because of who they traveled with and the area they were from in Detroit. I hope they were catholic because that way there may be records that we can find more info.
I believe someone gave me the actual death dat of Julia, but I cannot find it right now.
I just this week figured out how to do a report off my geneology software. I have been spending what little spare time I have updating this program with all the information I have gotten from finding the others on this list. I am slow and there is a lot of info so it may take a LONG time. I'm not good at this yet. I have not figuerd out how to edit what comes out. Here is a family sheet and a person sheet. (it does not show up here like my print preview.) I need lessons on this!

Welcome Cousins!
It is wonderful that we can be together in cyberspace if not physical space. I am sure we can learn so much from each other about our mutual family.
I feel it would be nice to have a little intro from everyone. Since there are only four of us so far it shouldn't take long. Perhaps I should start.
I was born in Michigan where my parents lived after WWII. I am one of eight children born to Garold Franklin Bovia and Helois Johnson Bovia. My father is still living and is from Toledo, OH and my mother is from Dorton, KY. We lost her in Aug. My father was the oldest child of 6 children born to Garold Francis and Elsie Thelma Bernore. Elsie was the daughter of Laura Mae Meyers/Spitz and William Benore. Laura later changed the spelling. (That is a story in itself, that you may enjoy) Laura was the daughter of Capitolia Chevalier daughter of Joseph and Julia. I do have some pictures of Julia. Now that I think of it one may have Joseph also. Not very good but still pictures. One is a 5 generation with my dad Gary, Elsie, Laura, Capitolia and Julia. Not many 5 generation pictures around.
I am an artisan and genealogist. I also teach both. I am a wife, mother of 5 children stepmother to 3 and my proudest role of all is GRANDMOTHER TO 20. (OK 19 but Nov will make it 20)
I have been doing genealogy for over 30 years, since I was a teenager.
OK enough for now.
Hope to hear from everyone.
Grins,
Kaye
