Hi Carolyn,
Please e-mail me the information on Sally Chestnut. I am researching Alexander Debose, John and James
Chestnut, Anthony Trapp,Evan Haile, and John Whitaker, all originally from Camden. These families left
Camden for Florida as a wagon train
just before 1860. Many of their family members are buried in north
central Florida.
Thank you very much.
Have a good evening,
Mamie

Is she in your tree?
I am reading a book called "Sherman's March" by Burke Davis and it has a good story concerning her during Sherman's raid. I will only have the book until Apr 4, 2003. If you want me to email you the story please contact me directly at : cb010147(a)cfl.rr.com

Thank you Norm for your continuing stream of information. Local contacts for
descendants of James Chestnut of Carnanreagh (1815-1889) are Sam Moore of
Ballymoney and F. James Chestnutt of Belfast. I am descended from John
Chestnut (1821-1884), James' brother.

They are physically close together. Almost certainly part of the same farm.
Two tasks need doing here. I do not have the Griffiths map for that area -
it is just off the East edge of the one that I have. That, along with the
entry in the printed Griffiths valuation book, would tell us exactly who
lived there in 1860. Second, I have called at the nearest farm - just across
the road and down a short lane, from the derelict buildings - on 2
occasions. Nobody at home either time. I will try again. You found the image
named Map1.gif

I am finding all the

That does not surprise me!! I happened to grow up in the area and at that
time (1950s) the townland names were still being used. However, they pose a
difficulty for those who are unfamiliar with the system. An important point
is that until the 1950s there were no modern style addresses for properties
in rural areas. You postal address would be something like William Chestnut,
Moycraig, Mosside. The numbers in Griffiths Valuation and in the 1901 census
are not at the front gates of the farms. It can therefore be a bit difficult
to 'place' someone using Church records alone. Exceptionally difficult if
there are several families of the same name in a townland.
Does any one know the names of the first
> Chesnut/Chestnuts who came from Scotland?
That is a difficult one. There are very few 'complete' records from before
the mid-1800s. There do not seem to be any Chestnut in the Hearth Money
rolls of 1666-1690. Maybe the Chestnuts avoided paying the tax - maybe they
had not arrived at that time. There is the occasional reference in the
mid-1700s. for example the Ballintoy householders list of 1734 - on the CD
under NorthAntrimData\Ballintoy\NameLists. Also the gravestone of Samuel (of
Carnaff) who died in 1734 - Images are in folder
Chestnut\OthersAntrim\Samuel of Derrykeighan. Anyway, it seems they had
thoroughly 'arrived' by 1750. There is a bit of a history of the name in the
web page folder as file huguenot.htm

I will have to guess a bit here.
Ballyrashane: Maybe the same as the Ballywatt family. I should be in contact
with Jim Chestnutt who is a estate manager for one of our heritage
organisations. He is of the family that have the unusual 'middle' name of
McAloney.
The Derrykeighan family(ies). Guess again - based on the name Samuel. The
Liscolman family - contact here is Ann Duff in Australia - they are in the
1901 census.
John Chesnut of Kilraghts. This one is easy. They have died out. There is a
line of gravestones at Kilraghts cemetery indicating a connection with the
Boyd family. There is a collection of wills of the early 1900s which trace
the last of the family - spinsters.
The county Down (Kilkeel) lot are thought to be from the Carnanreagh family.
Contacts there are Bill Hawk and Paul Chestnut.
Also in

Reasonably sure that he is one of my lot along with the John of Mosside
Samuel Chesnut - Lisnagat (I think this must be the father of
> Elizabeth who married John of Seacon, my great-grandparents),
I think you are correct.

That is really a difficult one. The date is about half-way between the Tithe
Applotment tax list and Griffiths Valuation. I suppose it is possible that
there were 2 different John Chesnut of Seacon townland. It is a frequent
given name in the families.

I would accept that. I don't know for sure that they emigrated to USA. The
evidence you quote would convince me. I wonder if this is the first
appearance of 'Saphronia' as a name in the family?
