Hi, I am doing research on the African American Chestnut family from Camden, Kershaw County, SC. The earliest known ancestor was a Johnson Chestnut born circa 1828 in Kershaw County, SC. This may have been on the Plantation of a John Chesnut in Kershaw County known as Knight's Hill. It is probable that Johnson was the son of this John Chesnut and an unknown slave women from the plantation. It appears that he was given his freedom by John Chesnut and came to Alachua County, Florida in the 1850s. This was the same time that John Chesnut's three sons, James, John and Thomas Whittaker also came to Alachua County. Johnson and his family probably came down as a freeman with these brothers. Johnson Chesnut married a Maria in Kershaw County and had the following children all born in Kershaw County except for the latter who was born in Alachua County, Florida; John b. 1851, Lawrence Edward b. 1853, James b. 1856, Bessie b. 1857 and Edward Mitchell b. 1868. I am trying to make!
some connection with the Chestnut from Camden area. Thanks. Jerry Greene, jgreene(a)gator.net

Hi, my name is Angie Thomas (Titus). My father's name was Joseph Michael Titus born in Marion County, Ind. on August 2, 1936. Since I can remember, I was told that my fathers parents were killed when he was little and he was raised by another family. When he died in 1996 I requested a copy of his birth cert. I found out that his birth mother was alive up until 1987. Her name was Frances L. Titus, born in Indiana, on 2-2-1907. There is no father listed on the berth cert. I don't know if this would help you. If you have any info that might help me I would truly appreciate it.
