Thanks for your input on the Seemore/Lenora question. I'm sure that my grandmother must have copied some wrong information at some point. Perhaps someone was reading to her and she misheard them.
My grandmother's name as it appears on her birth certificate is Sarah Katherine. She preferred the name Katherine and that is what she always went by; as a result, many records reflect that preference. I only knew ever heard her called Katherine.
I have information on the Bateses and Bourguins/Bergens. I've sent this info to Steve, but he may have some other information as he is really good at researching.
Elizabeth Bates is the daughter of Henry (born Henri) Bates (originally Batz or Bats), born about 1823 in Holland or maybe Germany and Maria (later called Mary) Bourguin, later changed to Bergen (on some records as Burgan, Bergin, and Berkin). Henry immigrated to American with his brother Frederick (b. Ferdinand) John Theodore who was born about 1813 or 1814, his brother John D. (b. Johannas) who was born about 1819, his sister Maria who was born about 1829, and their father John (b. Johannas) who was born about 1787, probably in Prussia. They sailed on a ship named Pavli or Paoli which departed from Antwerp, Belgium and arrived in New York on July 2, 1839. Immigration records say that all five family members were glass blowers. They settled in the Birmingham section of Pittsburgh which is part of the South Side.
Frederick was naturalized on October 9, 1849 and Henry and John D. were naturalized on August 17, 1844, on age.
The family's original church affiliation was originally St. Philomena's but they later moved to St. Michael's when that parish came into existance in the 1850s. St. Michael's was a German parish.
Frederick married Elizabeth Kuebel. They were living in Birmingham in 1848, had moved to Wheeling, Virginia (now West Virginia) by 1850, and had returned to Birmingham by 1852. They had four children: John Adam (22 Apr 1846 - 29 mar 1847), Maria Elizabeth who never married (b. 9 Jan 1848), Henry J. (3 Sept 1850 - 27 June 1914) who married Anna Catherine Gerhardt, and John Paul (b. 25 Oct 1852) who married Maria Anna Geschwena. Our grandfather Herny was the sponsor for his nephew Henry's baptism at St. Joseph Cathedral in Wheeling in 1850.
No additional information has been found on siblings John and Maria.
There is some question about the marriage of Henry Bates and Maria Bourguin. According to census records, they were married and living in Birmingham in 1850. St. Michael's church records do not show them being married until 1854 which is after both of their children were born. Perhaps their origianl marriage was outside of the Catholic church and they were later married in the church. This second marriage is the only one the church would have recognized. That is strictly speculation on my part. Both I and a descendant of Frederick Bates with whom I have been sharing information have not been able to sort this one out yet.
Henry and Maria had two children. Elizabeth was born in April 1850. A son Henry was born about 1854. Henry, Sr., Maria, and Frederick all died in the last great cholera epidemic to strike Birmingham. The three all died over the course of twelve days. Henry died 17 Aug 1854, Maria died 29 August, and Frederick died 24 August. They were all buried in St. Michael's Cemetery. There are no markers for their graves. It is not clear with whom Elizabeth and Henry lived after their parents' deaths. It may have been with their grandfather John or they may have gone to one of the Catholic orphanages in town. My grandmother and her sister Bertha just said that their grandmother was an orphan. I'd still like to find that missing piece of information. Sometime after 1860 the two children went to live with their maternal grandparents.
Now the Bourguins. Although there is some contradiction in the records, according to what I have found so far, Maria L. (b. about 1831) along with her brother Peter (b. abt. 1834, birthplace sometimes listed as New Jersey) and her parents Peter (b. abt. 1804) and Mary (b. abt. 1804)Bourguin immigrated to the United States from France sometime between 1834 and 1838. They first settled in New Jersey where Joseph W. (4 May 1838 - 4 Sept. 1915), Catherine (b. abt. 1840), and Frances/Frank (abt. 1842 - 5 Mar 1862) were born. By 1850 the family was living in Union Township, Washington County, PA. The father Peter was a coal miner. A sixth child, Esther F. was born about 1846 in Pennsylvania giving a better idea as to when the family moved to PA.
On 9 Sept. 1861, Frank enrolled in the Civil War 79th Co. D Infantry. He musterd in as a private on 12 Sept at the age of 19. He died of disease on 5 March 1862 at Munfordsville, Kentucky where his company had been stationed before joining the fighting.
In 1870, Henry Bates was living with Mary and Peter Bourguin (his grandparents) in Carroll Township, Washington County. Mary Bourguin died between 1870 and 1880. In 1880, Peter Bourguin and Henry Bates, who was still unmarried at this time, were living in Forward Township, Allegheny County either next door to or across the street from William Elwell and Elizabeth Chester. Henry was a coal miner and Peter was still working as a coal miner at this point. Peter undoubtedly died after 1880, but I'm not sure what happened to Henry after 1880.
The Bourguins or some Bourguins are buried in the Monongahela Cemetery. Visiting there to get those records and visit the graves is on my endless to do list.
This information is from census records, naturalization records, parish records, immigration records, cemetery records, Civil War records, and family records of the descendant of Frederick Bates who I mentioned before; we found each other a few years ago.
>From which of William Elwell's children do you descend and where is Petaluma. My descent is Samuel Henry, Sarah Katherine, David Rollison, but you probably had already figured that out.
Let me know if you have any questions but I may not be able to get back to you until next weekend.
Jill Rollison Cole

I am also researching William Elwell Chester, my gret-great-grandfather. I agree with Steve on the information about Seemore Chester and the fact that Lenora does not seem to exist.
I have a question for Jill I have a listing for Kathryn S. Rollison, source of name the 1910 census and Social Security Death Index. You list her as Sarah Catharine Chester Rollison. Do you know which is correct?
Steve, you mention having Famliy Register pages from the Chester Bible. Is there any chance of getting copies of these? I have been stuck on Elizabeth Baes for quite some time. Are you back to doing genealogy after your move (which I think was quite a wihle ago)?
The Henry Bates and Maria Bergen names are new to me.
Any help would be much appreciated. I am Linda Vourlogianes in Petaluma.
Thanks.

Sorry, I meant to type Elizabeth Chester, not Catherine. Is this Steve Chester? This is Jill Cole. Dave is my dad. I have been using my grandmother's information all of these years, but as hers was a transcription and yours is the original, I will defer to yours. Sorry to anyone else who reads this for the misinformation.

Although I do not have the bible, I do have the Family Register pages from the bible. It shows Seemore as the sixth child of William and Elizabeth (not Catherine). Elizabeth Bates' parents are Henry and Maria (Bergen).
Seemore died on March 5, 1882 (not confirmed). There is no Lenora listed. William E. is my great grandfather. BTW, are you related to David Rollison, born about 1924?

I've noted that several people have listed the sixth child of William Elwell and Catherine Bates Chester as Seymour or Seemore followed by a question mark indicating, I understand, that you are unsure of this information. According to my grandmother Sarah Catherine Chester Rollison's transcription of this page of the family Bible (I do not know who has the Bible now or if it even still exists), the sixth child was Lenora who was born 20 Sept. 1880. There was no death date listed.
