Here's the 1850 census or soundex for Tennessee but when I first started
out, I didn't get all the info as you can see. Maybe this will just give
you an idea of where to look. I had these typed just so-so, all lined up so
neat and this is the way they transferred, hope you can read them. LOL

I think that this family may be the one that's in Denton Co., TX in 1880 but
not sure. I believe somewhere that Wm. lists his mother as Lucy? I can't
remember which one right now. Good Luck.

In 1802 James Chester appeared in Philadelphia and joined St. George's
ME Church. In December 1803, he married Rebecca Oaks in the same
church. If he was at least 20 years when they married -- his birth
date would have been 1783 or earlier.
The complication that has risen here is that a son of Joseph Chester
in Cape May Co., NJ, named James, was born in 1783. However, we have
ruled him out in our research even though there are others researching
this line that have taken that as gospel. The members of the family
researching Joseph Chester say they are not the same person.
James and Rebecca had five sons: James Hayward (named after Rebecca's
step father), Solomon Sharpe (named after the minister who married
them), Albert, Asbury, and William.
In 1814, Rebecca bought property in Gloucester Co., NJ. In 1819,
James joined her there -- in that he "bought" the property she had
purchased (according to land records).
Rebecca died in 1826 and in 1827, James married Elizabeth Jenkins in
Camden, NJ. They had four children: George, John Jenkins, Thomas
Pierson and Amelia. George died of hydroencephilitis in 1835 a week
before James died of pneumonia. Both died in Kensington area of Phila
and were buried in the Union Weslyan Burial Ground (originally located
under what is now a freeway).
Elizabeth lost the property on which they were living in 1841 for
non-payment of mortgage. Subsequently, Elizabeth and the other three
children lived in Wilmington, DE. All the other three children died
before Elizabeth who was still living in 1850. All four (Elizebeth
and the three children) are buried in the Asbury ME Church in
Wilmington.
When James died in 1835, he named the four above children and his wife
and only mentioned that he first family was grown except for the
youngest (William-not named) who was living with a grandmother.
James Hayward Chester married Hannah Ann Kimble in 1829, apparently
had a son, James Reuben, who died in 1837 (both in Camden Co, NJ).
James moved to Indiana and died there in 1876. Hannah died in 1871.
They were survived by a daughter Mariah.
Solomon Sharpe Chester married Ruth Ann Leeds in 1832 in Gloucester
Co., NJ. They had William Edwin in 1839 and moved to Carrollton,
Greene Co., IL about 1841. They had a little girl there. Ruth Ann
died in 1843 and the baby shortly thereafter. Solomon joined the
Illinois military group that went to Texas and fought in the Mexican
war. He died in 1848 of injuries incurred near the Alamo.
William had joined his brother in IL and when Solomon went to Texas,
he watched William Edwin. William married Sarah Bomar in Illinois and
they moved to Knobnoster, MO, in the 1850s. W.E. went with them.
Albert and Asbury both remained in New Jersey and records of their
families are there. Their children kept in contact with W.E. and some
visited in Missouri.
While James and Rebecca lived in NJ, he practiced law and used the
"Esq." quite proudly. He was also a judge on the Court of Common
Pleas there as well as a ME Circuit rider. So, the man was
educated -- but where!!!!
William E. was quite active in the military during the Civil War in
and around Knobnoster, MO. He was a agent for Pinkerton on the
Missouri Pacific Railroad during the era of Jesse James.
Any one have any ideas where James, Esq., might have come from?

Sound Familiar?? Vicki Vaughn archerev(a)accessus.net
I do hope someone will recognise their relative here and that will help
Louise and me. LOL.
I have not talked to you in awhile and thought I would say hello. I had a
wild thought about your J O Chester, and it probably is just that. Since I
know I had an Aunt in Texarkana and you know JO was there at one time, and on
the family tree that Sammie sent me, it seems like one of John Robert's son's
lived in Hobbs NM, could they have kept in touch with each other? Could they
have been related? The only thing that gave me this idea is the fact that my
dad, (Lucius Lee) had a daughter named Etta that no one in the family knew
existed until the 60's. Seems like he was married before any of the wives we
have found, and I am not sure Etta was the only child. From what I have been
told about her she lived in the Fort Worth area and was a devout Penticost.
It is probably just coincidences and my wild imagination. One of Jacob R.
Chester's brothers may have been in the same area as him, and moved on before
the census.
Hope things are going okay for you. Things here have finally settled
down. I will talk with you later.
Your grandfather sounds so much like my dad. He was not a religious man, and
did not care for organized religion. He never kept us from going to church
with my mother, but you could tell it did not please him. He was spiritual
also. Plus he treated us for illnesses himself. When I broke my leg he set it
himself. He did not believe in sending us to the Dr. He used a lot of herbs
on us and CASTOR OIL........LOL. Still remember the taste of that stuff.
Other than the name Etta and that she lived in Ft. Worth, I know little else,
and the fact she was my daddy's daughter.
There are too many coincidences for there not to be a connection some
where along the way. Maybe if we keep plugging away we will find it. I like
your idea of posting the misc. Chesters. I mean, he could have been close to
the Chester in Texarkana and when she passed away (sometime in the 40's), he
just moved on, and I am not sure that Etta didn't know this Aunt Day. I don't
know how Etta ended up in Ft. Worth. Seems like the more I find out, the
deeper the mysteries get. Louise
Mercy !! If we arent kin it will be a miracle. My grandpa used herbs too. He
successfully treated my pneumonia with a poultice of fried onions mixed with
something. He had scars on his abdomen where a bull on the Hat Ranch gored
him. The wounds took 2 years to heal. He never saw a doc. He also had some
more peculiarities. He wore wool long underwear summer and winter. He said it
was insulation from the heat as well as the cold. Must have been right, he
worked in 100 degree heat regularly when he was over 90. He also did not ride
horses, all though he trained them. He would ride in a wagon, but hated to
ride in a car. He walked 36 miles to pay his taxes every year when he could
have been given a ride. He did ride in a car once in a while if he felt he
couldn't get that distance on foot in time to do what he wanted to do.
We simply have to be kin, no two ways about it!! Our dad treated us with the
onion poltice too! He didn't like to ride in cars either, and would walk to
town. He would treat cuts with kerosene, and go off in the woods to gather
his "makings for colds" and such. If we aren't related, our relatives were
real close. Sure wish I could remember more of him. I was 9 when he passed
away. I remember the day he did, he did not want my mother to call the Dr.
but she did anyway. By the time the Dr. got there he was too weak to protest.
He was 83 when he died. Looking back he must have had a heart attack, as he
was not sick, just started "feeling" bad that morning and by 11 oclock he was
gone. Seems like he wore long handled underwear too, as I can remember them
hanging out on the clothes line, now that you mention it. He also work kakki
pants and long sleeved shirts. I don't ever remember him in short sleeves,
summer or winter and always wore a hat. Louise
Oh, yes Kerosene for injury for sure. That is what he used on the place that
the bull gored him. And he never wore short sleeves and the cuffs were
buttoned. He wore Khaki or twill gaberdine western cut pants, and always a
hat and boots. Did you get the turpentine on a sugar cube for a tonic? I hear
it will kill you, but we CHESTER kids must be tough. And the castor oil,
ugh!! Oh yes, and he was the most gentle man I ever knew. He kept me in line
very well by simply saying in a sweet voice, "Now Jakey...." If he had ever
gotten mad at me it would have killed me I know. Leona
Oh yes, that turpentine cure!!! There is no way I will ever forget that. Did
you also get something called "spring tonic" when you had a stomach ache? I
remember it had some little things floating around in it that looked like
coconut and tasted just like the kerosene smelled.....ugh. Sure cured the
stomach ache, and gave you a good case of diarrhea! I wonder if any of the
Chesters out there were "cured" the same way we were. Maybe we should start a
"I survived the cure" site.... and just see if this is a family trait. Would
make for interesting reading.........Louise
I hesitate to post my information before receiving some clarification.
Would I be breaking any internet etiquette rules if I posted my entire file for the descendants of Jacob R. Chester? I am not sure how much is allowed? Sammie
Yes, I would love to go for it. But I don't have any that I know of, except
my "Grannie" used to chase crows outside her house in Northern CA, USA. She
was Anne Lorena CHESTER.
Sincerely,
Cyndee SCHUBERT
