James married Rosannah LEE LEMAR in 1852 after Sarah SPURLING Chesser died in 1851. He and Rosannah had 2 ch. Rosannah married Rice COWLES in 1867. The father of William and James P. CHESSER married Sarah (maiden name unknown) and he died before 22 Mar.1805 when she married Abraham HILL who was then stepfather to young William and James CHESSER. Sarah DEWITT CHESSER, the widow of William CHESSER married David EBERHART in 1824 in Warren Co. OH.
I need to know of a CHESHIRE/CHESSER who died between 1800 and 1805 in Hampshire Co. VA (WV after 1863) or if marriage records, taxlists, cemetery records, etc. exist. Also regarding the town of Cheshire, Ohio in Gallia Co. on the Ohio River which was sold a couple of years ago to an energy company rather than their having to settle large lawsuits with the populace. Was this where Cheshire/Chesser families might have settled or crossed into Ohio? Does anyone have information on this in a family or county history?

It does seem as though there were two John Chessers in the PA Ohio area at the same time.

There are several people on this board searching for their Chesser roots in this part of the country, especially in the early to mid 1800s. If you also have ties to this area, we'd love you to join the discussion. I will begin by saying that I am searching for the parents of Israel Chesser, born between 1806 and 1811. He married Elizabeth Stanley 26 Dec 1833 in Green Co, PA. They had a son, John born in Ohio Co, VA/WV in 1839. They migrated to Vinton Co., Ohio in the 1840s. (If you receive this message through the Rootsweb Chesser board and would like to respond, I hope you will do so through the Chesser board on Ancestry.com, so that all will see the message.)

The following is Israel & Elizabeth's marriage date. This was in West Alexander, PA just across the border of the northern panhandle of Ohio Co., VA, later WV. Hundreds of couples travelled to PA to be married as there was no waiting period or license requirements.

My Israel Chesser was born in either VA or PA (there was a part of southwestern PA that was claimed by VA at one time, I believe). He was born between 1806 and 1811, depending on which census information is correct.
Israel married Elizabeth Stanley on 26 Dec 1833 in Green Co., PA. Their eldest son, John (My great-great grandfather) was born in Ohio County, WV. John was born in 1839.
I believe that Greene Co is adjacent to Washington Co in PA. There could be a connection. I also know that there were McWhorters who moved on to Vinton Co, Ohio.
Perhaps, my Israel is an older brother of your John.
Did a census search for John on the 1860 census. Couldn't find any
matches in Virginia (since WV was still part of VA in 1860), but did find
this match in PA, and it's in Washington Co., where your John Chesser
was:
1860 PA, Washington Co., West Finley, pg 1041:
Chesser, John, 40, tailor, PA
, Eliza, 33, PA
, Martha, 16, VA
, Alice J., 14, VA
, John, 11, VA
, William, 5, VA
, Amanda, 4, VA
The father is about the right age, he has a son William close to the
right age, William was born in VA, and they are in Washington Co., PA. I
think it is more than coincidental. Especially when I find the same
family in 1850 VA, Ohio Co.
1850 VA, Ohio Co., Dist. 44, 27 Aug., pg. 31b:
Chesser, John, 30, tailor, PA
, Eliza, 24, PA
, Mary M., 5, VA
, Alice J., 3, VA
, Zachery T., 6 mo.
There is another Chesser living in Ohio Co. in 1850. Frank Chesser, 34,
b. PA, dist. 44, p.198b. Perhaps he is a brother.
1870 PA, Washington Co., West Finley, 8 July, pg. 427b:
Chessor, John, 53, PA, farmer
, Eliza, 45, PA
, Martha, 26, VA
, Alice, 22, VA
, John, 18, VA
, William, 16, VA
, Amanda, 13, PA
, Francis, 5, (male), PA
In 1880, Eliza is a widow, and there are two grandchildren living with
her:
1880 PA, Washington Co., West Finley, ED 268 sh 19, pg. 548
Chesser, Eliza, 53, wid., PA/PA/PA
, Francis, 15, son, laborer on farm, PA
, Eva, 7, gdgt., PA
, Lucretia, 5, gdgt., PA
There is a William Chesser, 21, listed as a servant with A.C. Cleaver,
ED 267 sh 23, pg. 537c in Washington Co., PA. Seems quite a bit too
young, as he was 16 in 1870, and 5 in 1860. Plus, it says he was b. in
PA.
I just found William V. Chessey with wife and dgts. in Triadelphia, Ohio
Co., WV in 1880. ED 215, sh 36.
Chessey, Wm. V., 23, farm laborer, WV/-/-
, Caroline, 23, PA/PA/PA
, Sylvia, 1, WV/WV/PA
, Birdie Z., 2 mo., b. Apr., WV/WV/PA
Clemens, Lucy, 16, sis-in-law, PA/WV/PA
Looks like Sylvia was actually born in 1879, as Birdie was b. in April of
1880.
I have no connection with this family- just saw an opportunity for some
census searching, one of my favorite pasttimes!

John Chesser was born ab. 1821 in Washington County PA- I don't know who or where his parents or ancestors were...still searching.
His son William Vincent Chesser, (still looking for other children) was born ab. 1853 Marshall county WV.

who was from PA & they lived in PA as did my family for the next 3 generations...According to my great grandmother-Sylvia & Harry's daughter, Mabel, this is the root of some of my research problems...Harry Joseph Renz was a racist. Because Sylvia was part indian, he destroyed her indian paperwork and all of her family records so there would be no trace of his children's herritage.
There could be a connection, unfortunately, I'm missing John Chesser's ancestors. Does anything ring a bell with you?

Hi :
My gg. grandparents were Sylvia Chesser & Joseph Renz. Caroline Belgium or ( Bell ) Clemens -PA and William Vincent Chesser -WV were my ggg. grandparents. John Chesser and Ann Eliza McWhorter were my gggg. grandparents.
My ggg. grandmother Caroline Belgium Clemens might be William Vincent Chesser's second wife-which would explain why M. Myers was not listed as a widow.
I have nothing beyond John Chesser (have to go in european records perhaps), but I have the McWhorter's to the 1724 Delaware colonies.
Here's the tricky part. My ggg. grandmother Caroline Belgium Clemens was maybe adopted into the Clemen's family by a George Clemens & his wife (name?). What I do have is several tin-types of Caroline as an older woman, one of Caroline as a teenager standing next to an older woman (her adopted mother???) who is very pale compared to my ggg. grandmother, & a large oval portrait orf her in a tortiseshell frame. I also have one of her victorian-era jackets-my grandmothers were all pack rats.
My family was in PA & WV & TN for centuries & beyind-however, I'm a first generation Californian.
Does anything ring a bell with anyone?
