I am a “Chesnut” and need more info about taking the DNA test - I believe I am on the Alexander line

The Ross-Chesnut-Sutton family of South Carolina is the book that might help some people on the Chesnut(a)rootsweb.com <mailto:Chesnut@rootsweb.com> list:

This family is descended from Alexander Chesnut of Frederick, CO Virginia, the family of James Chesnut whose wife was Mary Boykin Chesnut. You can get this book from the Library of Virginia free through interlibrary loan from your local library to verify one way or the other. I found out about this William B. White at the Frederick CO, VA library, but they didn't know he had published a book about these 3 lines. I found out by continuing to search for him on the Internet. He wrote to a genealogist in Frederick Co for help a number of years ago. She was only able to give him info about Alexander Chesnut and his immediate family. The genealogist donated her research to the library.

Alexander Chesnut who died near Winchester, VA is with that line. I took pictures of pages from the book to send to Ancestry as they had Alexander down as the father of my William Chesnut which is DEFINITELY not the case. When I get back to Virginia I think I can find the name of the name of the person who wrote the book. I was able to get it by Interlibrary loan. He was not related to Alexander but Aleander's wife, a Ross. They settled in South Carolina. Her husband, a general, was a aide to the President of the Confederates

Males should test at the 37 level as a minimum. I got this information from Don Chesnut, the Project Director. He needs a lot more participants. To identify the different lines is very important.
Their next sale is, I think, in December. If I hear of one before that, I will pass it on.

I'm thinking we probably connect back a few generations...
My Chesnutts were in Southern Ga- ( some came down into Fl), before Ga the were in the Sampson County, NC area, then back to VA. I believe Alexander is way back there.
We need to compare lines.

For sure none of William Chesnut's clan lived in the Isle of Wight and few went to Tennessee.

My father was Patrick E. Chesnut from New York. He has a brother somewhere but have lost contact when I was a child back in the 70s. I know he only had daughters also.

Hopefully some MALES from the Alexander line will take the YDNA test. It will make it easier for those who DON'T KNOW WHICH CHESNUT LINE IS THEIRS.
I ENCOURAGE ANY MALE CHESNUT OF SOME OR SIMILIAR SPELLING WHO DOESN'T KNOW HIS LINE TO BE TESTED.

225. FREDERICK CHESNUT6 (Leander5,Edmund4,Wm.3,John2,Wm.1) was born about 1863 and later moved to Graham, Texas after the turn of the century, but he originally came to Texas in 1886 with his new bride. His wife was Thena Short (born about 1865), and they both died sometime before 1957 when relatives reportedly visited the family and names were written down. He lived in several areas of West Texas until he settled in Finis, Jack County, Texas. He was a cattle rancher there on 640 acres. Finis is no longer on the map, a ghost town since the 1920s. Apparently, many Chesnuts are buried in the Finis cemetery.
The children of Frederick and Thena (Short) Chesnut:
410.i. AUDREY Chesnut, born about 1891 and married a man named Sealy.
411.ii. MYRTLE Chesnut, born about 1893 and married Fred Moren who lived 12 miles from Graham, Texas in 1957.
412.iii. LEE ANDERSON Chesnut, born about 1895 in Oklahoma and married a woman named Mildred and had six children. He changed the spelling of his last name to "Chestnut."
413.iv. THOMAS D. Chesnut (sometimes known as "TD" or possibly Witt), born about 1898, possibly in Oklahoma, and married a woman named Grace. They had a daughter, Thelma Chesnut, who married a Stafford. Thelma was born in 1920 and was the oldest daughter.
414.v. GUSS Chesnut, born about 1901 and married a woman named Edna.
415.vi. MARY Chesnut, born about 1906 and married a man named Pennington.
416.vii. HERBERT HADLEY Chesnut, born about 1909 and married a woman named Nina.
276. BENNETT P. CHESNUT6 (James5,Abe4,Jacob3,John2,Wm.1) was born in January, 1852 in Kentucky, probably in Rockcastle County. His wife's name was Sarah C. (last name not determined) who was also born in Kentucky, in December, 1853. They lived next door to Bennett's parents in Rockcastle County in 1880. About 1885, Bennett moved his family to Texas, where in 1900 they lived in Palo Pinto County. Several children were then born in Texas.
The children of Bennett and Sarah Chesnut were:
447.i. JAMES C. Chesnut, born February 1874 in Kentucky, in Rockcastle County. The 1900 Texas census showed a James C. Chesnut in Parker County (adjacent to Palo Pinto County). By 1910 he was in Palo Pinto County. His wife's name was Nancy (born in October 1878 in Texas). She died in 1966 and is buried with James in the North Santo cemetery in Palo Pinto County. James died in 1939. Their children were all born in Texas:
447.1.LILLIE/NORA Chesnut, born June, 1895.
447.2.ARTHUR Chesnut, born December, 1896.
447.3.EMSLIE (or Emisly) Chesnut, as son, born August 17, 1899 and died November 20, 1954.
447.4.GAYLORD Chesnut, born about 1902.
447.5.HUBERT Chesnut, born 1903, died 1911.
447.6.ARLIE Chesnut, born about 1905.
447.7.IRENE Chesnut, born about 1907.
448.ii. JOHN A. Chesnut, born September 1, 1875. He was unmarried in Texas in 1900. He died January 31, 1908.
There are also some from OK which I don't consider southern, what seems like thousands from Kentucky.
I saw no one from any other southern state assuming I didn't miss anybody. There is an index of people before it goes into more detail which gives their residence. I saw so many who lived in Nebraska where I grew up. However, back then there was no easy way to know they existed and were related.
Now descendants of the people from TX may have moved east to a southern state but there is no more info about them except what you see below..
There are many gaps as with my second great grandfather Granville and Sarah Strong Chesnut, none of their 9 children are listed. Granville's brother Lecil lived in Nebraska too but in the eastern part so likely didn't know they were both living in the same state.
449.iii. GROVER B. Chesnut, born in August 1879. He married in Texas to a woman named Estella Ince (Stella) (last name not determined). She was born in December, 1882 in Texas. By 1910, their children (all living in Palo Pinto County) were:
449.1.CLARENCE Chesnut, born about 1901 in Texas.
449.2.FLOYD L. Chesnut, born in 1906 in Texas and died in 1907. He is buried in the Dobbs Valley Cemetery in Palo Pinto County.
449.3.ELDEN Chesnut, born about 1909 in Texas.
450.iv. ROSA B. Chesnut, born January, 1884 in Kentucky, probably Rockcastle County.
451.v. MARY L. Chesnut, born August, 1886 in Texas.
452.vi. BENNETT Chesnut, born March, 1889 in Texas. In 1910, he was living with his wife Estella with no children, still in Palo Pinto County.
453.vii. RUBIN P. Chesnut, born May, 1892 in Texas.
454.viii. ALLIE P. Chesnut, born August, 1894 in Texas.
455.ix. ELMER L. Chesnut, born August 1899 in Texas.
277. THOMAS FRANKLIN CHESNUT6 (James5,Abe4,Jacob3,John2,Wm.1) was born in Kentucky, probably Rockcastle County, in March 1855. His wife in 1880 and 1900 was Mahaly Jane (last name not determined) who was born in Kentucky in October 1853. The 1870 census showed Thomas as "Thomas F.," but the earlier 1860 census showed him, with his parents, as "Franklin." Since both "Thomas F." and "Franklin" were born the same year, we conclude they were the same person. Between 1895 and 1899 the family moved to Palo Pinto County, Texas where Thomas (known as Frank) lived in the same area as his brothers Bennett and James and their families. Thomas Franklin died in 1929 and is buried in the North Santo cemetery in Palo Pinto County.
The children of Thomas and Mahaly Chesnut:
456.i. ASHEA Chesnut (a girl), born about 1876 in Rockcastle County.
457.ii. CAUSBY A. Chesnut, born about 1879 (according to the 1880 Kentucky census) in Rockcastle County. However, the 1900 Texas census showed a son, "Omer," born in August, 1879 in Kentucky; no Causby was listed in the family then.

Having a male Chesnut in your line take the YDNA test and submit the results to the Chesnut and other surnames YDNA PROJECT. That way you can find out what group u fall into or whether you are a new Chesnut line.
I appears there may be more lines than we realize.
Your info was interesting. How was it that General Chesnut wrote to your gg grandfather and why was he mentioned in her diary.
Have you read "Mary Chesnut Civil War" by C. Vann Woodward which won a Pultizer Prize in History in 1982. I wonder if your gg grandfather is also mentioned there.
Have u gone on the CHESNUT YDNA PROJECT WEBSITE to see what they know so far?
Don Chesnut manages it. He is of my line. I would suggest u go to The Library of Virginia in Richmond. I also suggest you get the book I got from them on inter library loan for which I don't have the author's name as in VA.
I think your line came from England and were English because they entered through the Virginia Colony where the Church of England was the official religion.
Good luck.

I have tried to make a connection between my husband’s Chesnutt family from Alabama/Tennessee/Isle of Wight, North Carolina and the Camden Chesnuts and have not been able to. I am from Camden and actually have a letter that General Chesnut wrote to my gg grandfather. My gg grandfather is also mentioned in “A Dairy from Dixie.” Any help along these lines would be very much appreciated.

This book will not help you at all regarding Chesnuts on the Isle of Wright in Virginia. They all went south, a different line.
Do you still want it?
