My husband's family, Hugh Chesnutt (1777-1845) was in Hawkins County Tennessee by the time of his death. I believe that he came from North Carolina and was the son of James Chesnutt but have no proof of that. Hugh was married to Mary Shelton.
Good day Nancy,
I am Roland Keith Chestnut, son of Roland Bedford Chestnut who was born and raised in Beaverdam Creek
here in NC. My grandfather was John Joseph Chestnutt. My great grandfather was Bedford Brown Chesnutt. All of NC.
( Note the variation in the spelling of the last name ) and was a Confederate Soldier in the 3rd NC State Troops - Private - Company G
3rd Infantry - enlisted Clinton NC on Nov.12, 1861.
Our ancestry starts back in 1769 from England and Australia.
The only James Chesnut I am able to find in our history, is a James R. Chesnutt, Born 12/14/1812 in Effingham Indiana and married a woman
named Thankful Emma Hardy in Wayne County Kentucky on 09/10/1838, They had 5 children. 3 boys and 2 girls. Names are not known except
for one daughter, Sarah Ann. Born on 06/29/1846 in Cumberland Tennessee.
Vital Historical Records from the US Library show that James was killed in a skirmish between Union Troops and Confederates by accident on
10/11/1863 at Mareys Gap. James was a farmer and Livery Owner.
That's all the info I have on this particular name.
I have another James Chesnutt in our records, James Ross Chesnutt, but he was born and died in NC.
I hope this helps you out.
Sincerely,
Keith Chestnut

Which James Chesnut? The one married to Mary Boykin Chesnutt had no descendants. There are several but you would need more information as to which one he is.

Alice
Thank you, I have used the family research web site for some of my searches in the past. I found some information that matches my known and verified information but nothing new. What I do know for sure about "William Chestnut" my great grandfather came from
wedding and birth certificates. In those, he listed himself being born in
1860 Kentucky but the area wasn't stated. I first pick him up when he married my great
grandmother "Sarah Hanna Ginther" in Primghar Iowa in June 1886. They had three
children, "James William Chestnut" my grandfather being the second born, in
Lowry Minnesota August 1888.
I also have some Census data
dated before his marriage to Sarah, that suggests he may have traveled
across country working as a laborer for various railroad projects. I
can't be sure it is him however although, his age, the dates and
direction he was headed works as well as where this person was born.
From this 1880 Census in Bridgeport Missouri is where I find the
information about his parents being born in VA..
My great grandfather "William
Chestnut", worked as a railroad "fireman" for the Soo line in Minnesota. My
last location on my great grandfather "William Chestnut" was living in
Minneapolis Minn., listed in the city directory of 1888/1889, and working as
a fireman for the Soo line R.R..
After that nothing, I can't find a death certificate for him even
though family rumor had him dying in a train wreak. This I have search
extensively on-line about train wreaks and those killed working for the railroad during
that era, but can find no record of him.
Now, Sarah remarried
another man in 1895, last name McCutchen, and all of the kids from the
Chestnut marriage just took his name. This is how I became a McCutchen
and not a Chestnut.
If any of this sounds familiar, either in
your own family line, or if you have run across anything that might fit
my line, I would appreciate a heads up.
Thanks
Bruce

Try going to http://www.new.familysearch.org/ . You will need his birthdate and place or deathdate and place. It is more helpful if you can give the county and state but if not just put what you have in.Good luck. My great grandmother was a chestnut from Mt. Olive, NC.

I have a photo of Adeline shortly before her death. She is surrounded
by [I think] her adult children. She married Elisha Chesnut. Adeline
[1849 - 1938] died in Fallis, Lincoln, OK. Any descendants out there
who could possibly help me identify the others in the photo?
Molly
Bruce, I do not know who Hillary is, but since I received this email, I will answer.
I am the 3rd great grand daughter of William Thomas Chesnut, born 1831 in Indiana. This William Chestnut had three sons, Hannigan, William August Chesnut born 1859, and Sanford LafayetteChesnut (Lafe). Would this William August be your ancestor?
I have a picture of Hannigan Chesnut standing in front of his shoe shop in about 1880. There is a large wooden sign in the shape of a boot hung over the shop door which clearly says CHESNUT, no T. There is another man standing beside him that looks like he could be his twin. This man could be either William August or Lafe.
My fourth great grandfather, William Chestnut was born in 1794 in Washington, Nelson, Kentucky. His father, was also named William Gordon Chestnut was born 1768 in Augusta, VA . I also have several other William Chesnuts in my files.
Most of the information that I have on these 3 gr grandfathers, spell the name CHESTNUT with a T. I have a great deal of information gleaned on these men, but I am always anxious to get more primary sources and get to know more cousins. I would love to compare notes.

Is this a general inquiry about your relative search, or did you address this to me specifically? I'm also trying to get a handle on my lineage but the last name was spelled Chestnut. I understand that some families dropped the (T) from the spelling.
I'm looking for my great grandfather William Chestnut born around 1860 in Kentucky someplace. Not sure that we are seeking the same line but always eager to test the possibility. If you feel it is possible, let me know and I will share what little I know about ours.
Always frustrating but ever rewarding when you learn something new. Don't give up, keep pulling on those threads.
