My late husband, William Hamilton Chesnut, had extensive work done on his
genealogy. I have a large file and have been looking it over. He is a
descendent of Alexander Chesnut, b.1672 in Ireland, died 1749 in Frederick Co.
Virginia (now W. VA.) He was married to Mary O'Draine/Adrian in Antrim,
Ireland.. My husband is descended from one of their sons, David, also born in
Ireland, and died in Chester County , SC. The Chesnuts moved to Georgia, and many
are buried in White Oak ARP Church in Moreland Georgia. My husband is buried
there along with at least 3 generations of Chesnuts. We have visited other
Chesnut graves in Atlanta. Let me know if you think this is the same
family. It would take me a while, but I can send you what I have. My
sister-in-law and her husband visited the areas in Ireland, and I can ask her what she
found. Good Luck, Joan Chesnut, Charlotte, NC

I appreciate this forum and the responses received. I'm very much the novice but thanks to the research of others I've been able to trace my line to ..
Alexander Samuel Chesnut, Jr (b.1672) and Mary Adrian O'Drain .. married 1713 in Antrim County, Ireland
But that is where my research ends.
My wife and I are planning a trip to Ireland in March 2010. A visit to the Parish of Derrykeighan is a priority.
I would appreciate any additional suggestions or contacts.

Chip,
Unfortunately, there is no evidence.
The big problem of Irish genealogy is the lack of useful data from before
about 1820. The majority of records were destroyed in 1922 in a fire at the
Dublin Public Record Office. One particular church (Billy Parish Church) had
the extreme misfortune to only just have sent its registers to the PRO in
about 1910.
If a family genealogy had been drawn up before 1922 then it probably
contains very valuable information. I don't know of any such Chestnut data.
The majority of earlier records that we have are in the form of name lists
(mostly drawn up for taxation purposes) and contain no family data.

Alexander Chestnutt (1858-1919), of Craigpark, is buried in Old Derrykeighan
burying ground in the same plot as Samuel Chesnut (see below). Alexander's
father was James Chestnut of Carnanreagh (ca. 1813-1889)
Alexander's children are: Cassie, James, Maggie, Ezekiel Boyd, William
Alexander, Annie Mary and Emily Rachel.
"Here lyeth the body of Samual Chasnut who departed this life on 7 December
1734. Also his ... "
There exists a will made by a later Samuel Chesnut of Carnaff. The will was
made in 1777 and proved in 1783. He leaves some property in Carnaff townland
to his only son Benjamin.
I am not aware of any evidence which definitely links Alexander, Samual and
Samuel.
